I really like the idea of not protecting your ship but a small world. I will go into a bit more detail about this mechanic because I think there is room for improvement.
First of all, your ship is basically invincible, which was a bit confusing at first. I think it is a good idea to not have two things that could die, but I think it might have worked better if there was some way of being punished for getting hit, like being propelled across the screen or not being able to fire for a few seconds.
Next you chose to counterweight the power of the special weapons by allowing them to harm the planet. While I appreciate the thought, I think the weapons are not useful enough for such a big disadvantage, especially the laser which can decrease the planet's life quickly. The weapons feel great and it's fun to use them but they feel impractical after a while.
Finally, have you thought about getting rid of the energy bar and instead show the planet's life implicitly, e.g. by reducing its size or having chunks blasted off it when it's hit? I think it would avoid the initial confusion that it's not your life bar but the planet's.
From a replayability perspective, I think the game's difficulty should ramp up a bit faster to get that "one more round!" feeling. Maybe introduce the weapons bit by bit instead of all at the same time. Maybe play around with the idea of having rounds instead of a single continuous level.
Overall I think it's a very solid game with a few flaws. I really like minimalistic games like this and the feel of the game is spot-on. My suggestions for improvement would be to tweak the mechanics a bit more.
I had a little problem with the hit stopping when breaking a lot of objects with the beam as it appeared like the game was lagging instead of the hit stop. I really liked the different powerups but I had a problem with them as they almost didn't change much the attack power between them, as they spawn a lot you often have to choose which one you want but as they are almost the same in attack power then that decision is meaningless. I really like the graphics too and the player feedback that they give is nice.
As it is, this is a fun game, it just needs a little more polishing. Good job!
Overall, this is a very impressive game, especially for your first LD. Well done!
I did find that the balance was a bit off (I'm pretty sure more than 50% of the damage done to my planet was a result of stray laser beams). Making the player invincible was a cool way to put the focus on the world itself, though I think it would have been nice if colliding with objects directly still had some sort of reaction, e.g. pushing the player around or temporarily disabling them.
Overall, a great little entry!
Minor bug: when the planet finally did lose all of its health, the game froze up for a few seconds and the audio got stuck on a loop before it recovered and showed a game over screen.
Finally I found a shooter game on this LD, good job!
Sometimes it was troublesome having the laser at times as it drained the planet's health quite fast. I like that the ship is invincible, but at times it feels a bit off, like I can fly through whatever I want, it may be a good idea to punish the player (not for too long) for getting hit. I would suggest having the enemies come in waves as it give the player time to recoup, and you can introduce new enemies and such. This is just a suggestion though. It would be nice to have some music as well. :D
Great job! :)
