Snaketris by Yngvarr

"The more you have, the worse it is" principle can be applied to the most of classic arcade games. For example, Snake gets worse each time it grows another tile of it's tail, and Tetris gets worse with every tetrimino you place. Why not to just take this mechanics and combine it the funniest way you can?

Let me introduce: SnaketriS!

Snaketris is a hotseat cooperative game for two where the first player uses cursor keys to control snake, eat fruit and grow, and the second player tries to play tetris using WASD. Your aim is to clear as many lines as you can, just like in classic tetris game. With a little difference: you can use snake to do it.

How many points can you score?

UPD: we made some significant changes (devlog). Check out a new version on itch.io.

Wow, these games works beautifully together. Great job. Had lots of cool moments where we had to take the snake through some path layed by the tetris blocks.

I liked the concept for this game... for extra challenge, play it solo. ;)

Really great idea! We had lots of fun playing this. The only thing that felt a bit unfair is when blocks float in the air near one of the spawns after colliding with the snake.

@lillybyte, yeah, it's like 2.5 times harder, but still playable. =)

@foomar, hmm, we'll check this thing out, thanks for feedback!

Really interesting idea, had a lot of fun playing it with a friend. Would have liked a replay now button after playing it so many times

@yngvarr only 2.5 times harder? It was ridiculously fun, but basically impossible with one person. I played with a second player later and it was still fun. I wish the snake spawned at a random position at the top. It's possible for the snake to die and become unplayable and then just be in an unwinnable game of Tetris for a while. Really fun, though.

Really hard to play solo, but a really cool cooperative idea!
I think with a few more mechanics (Maybe being able to push apples around?) the tetris player can have a little more to do while waiting for the snake.

This is amazing! I wish I had someone else to play it with, but honestly it's a little fun trying to control both sides at one time.

@ed3187, I remember thinking about "play again" button, but I was too sleepy. Thank you for reminding!

@amir-bayareh, challenging, isn't it? =) Thank you!

@bryceltaylor, ooh, it really is an issue. Thank you for your feedback!

@dorblin7z7, thanks for a suggestion. Snake role turned out to be more dynamic.

@asixjin, well, it wasn't designed for one player, but still can be an interesting experience. Thanks for your feedback.

Interesting coop design. I've never thought of putting these two games together. Good idea.

Wow, the idea is awesome! Coop Tetris + Snake looks nice. It's a very fine concept to implement in online games, I think, with online coop it would be great!

Great implementation, love the simple concept of merging two classics and make them work together. This was one of the ideas i thought about a couple of years ago, but never go around to it, great idea!

Concerning the audio, maybe a music track would be great. It felt kind of empty. But the sound effects were good.

Overall I like this game very much. I had an amazing time playing it. I found it very innovative and creative. I haven't seen anyone else think of this! such an original game. Thank you so much for this experience and good luck in the future! Have an awesome day, and I hope to see you in the next jam!

Nice concept! Tetris and Snake are almost first game mechanisms coming to my mind when I saw the theme, while I never thought about combining them together :)

Thank you, everyone! It's a pleasure to see your comments here! =)

@interpol, interesting idea, should be challenging to implement. Added to TODO list anyway. =)

@dudum-lare, there is some kind of WIP version of a background tune made by @komnotmr, but we decided not to put unfinished work to a game. Sound can make a game better, but can also ruin it.

very cool combo of classic games. nice simple feel overall. would be nice to have AI when only one person is around (but the co-op works great)

Lovely idea, so simple and elegant!
The controls felt a bit stiff and awkward, probably due to low framerate.
The two game mechanics work really well together, and I imagine there could be lots of yelling between two "coop" friends :)

good ideia i didnt expect the two games to go nicely together wish i had someone else to play it with me playing both players by myself makes the game very hard xD

Great idea, never though about joining these two games and I'm glad I gave it a go. Had a lot of fun with my boyfriend. The game could benefit of more polishing when you have the time. The graphics aren't great and a fitting music would be good. Nonetheless, very good work. = ]

Cool idea and well executed! I got a glitch where the snake respawned into itself again and again until there was a tower to it's spawn point, but there was no game over or something to handle this. So the snake was just caught in a loop at its spawn, only the controls of the tetris blocks were still working.

Other than that: Fun! :)

I didn't play with a partner, so I did not really get the full experience, but great mash-up of an idea! I plan on coming back with someone else to give it a try. There is a little bit of lag on the snake.

This is a super cool idea, and even if co-op, can be played single player - so props for that! These 2 games work surprisingly well together!
