Tejuru (Tetris & Jump & Run & Digger & Unicorns) by larzan

[raw]
made by larzan for LD 41 (JAM)

Welcome to TEJURU, in this wonderfully colored world many poor unicorns perish at the hands of inapt players. Will you be the one that saves the day and leads them to freedom?

Your task is to

  1. climb / jump as high as possible while trying to
  2. prevent the unicorn currently in your care from being burnt by the rising LAVA and to
  3. not jam the TETRIS machine that churns out the very blocks that you need to climb higher

Info window

  • Total blockweight : the blocks the machine has already churned out, your points
  • Total newlines: how many times the blocks were crushed under their own weight
  • Next newline in: how much more blockweight you need until the next line of blocks is crushed
  • LAVA distance : well, the distance to the lava below you

TL;DR:

Use A, D to move the tetris blocks, W to rotate them and S to drop them

Use the :leftright: cursor keys to move your unicorn (you can double jump with the UP key)

SPACE + cursor keys to destroy the tile currently blocking you way

After a certain amount of blocks have dropped the bottom tetris line will disappear and the lava will be pushed back a line

Don't loose in tetris

Don't burn

Don't get stuck

Press F5 to restart!

p.s.: be careful, the game is challenging, i did not have time to balance it more and make it more accessible, so put on your helmet and brace yourselfs :) in a post-compo version i will make it easier for beginners

DISCLAIMER

All programming and Gfx has been done by me without using any third party material, i would have gone for the Compo, but i didn't have enough time as it was the first time i used Godot.

Audio samples have been downloaded from zapslat.com

p.s.: on tuesday evening (25th) after work i fixed the following * bottom line of blocks not disappearing anymore * problems with removing block tiles via space * added detailed instructions on how to play the game

Nice game. I encountered some bugs that somewhat killed the fun but the idea is great and the colors are well chosen. I think aside from the bugs one of the main problems I had is that the blocks most of the time don't build paths to escape the lava. But may I missed something.

@gagapete Thanks for the feedback, the idea is that you have to keep an eye on the Tetris side of things to not run out of blocks to climb on while not getting crushed by the new arrivals (SPACE + CURSOR to remove blocks that are in your way)
I uploaded a version with some of the bugs fixed on wednesday night

pretty neat combination ! i didn't realize the blocks had little passages inside them at first. it's also very easy to get stuck jumping up and bumping against the corner of a block (seems like you can't delete them from that angle either), but overall it's interesting. some of the gameplay could stand to gel a bit better, would also love to see the big blocks falling down in the main window too

Nice idea ! I love the concept, really interesting ! Maybe more feedback or signs to help the player and it will be really good !

Nice idea, The design is nice too. it could be improved by simply adding a view of the tetris block that is falling the view for the poney. Thank you for your submission

A few things made casual tactics very unsustainable and thus killed the fun a bit:

The lava was rising quite fast from the very beginning.
Sometimes lines wouldn't clear at all (perhaps I was in them ...?).
The wall breaking mechanism via space was very cumbersome to get around.

I could only sustain myself a bit longer by building a tower to climb on one side to sit atop and then focus on playing Tetris in the pit. I'd expect that to become necessary later on, but not from the get go.

Platforms you can jump through from below instead of block breaking would've been easier.

edit: ah, now I get it - lines aren't cleared traditionally but via "block weight" - that may have been a bad decision when invoking Tetris mechanics (it's unexpected) - so you gotta spam blocks quickly with a good rather than perfect fit to stay above the lava ...?

I really enjoyed the concept but the game was a bit too messy to fully enjoy. Why making tetris lines is not enough to make them disappear? After getting all the controls (I missed the destroying part at first), this was the Tetris part that make me loose each time and that was kinda frustrating.

Still, I had much more fun than expected because I thought it would be to hard to be enjoyable! And it's a very nice first game!

PS: I agree about the colors with @gagapete, they were really soft and nice looking together!

> Why making tetris lines is not enough to make them disappear?

@nonimad probably because it would mess with the platforming if lines you are in/above/below would suddenly disappear - so instead everything is just pushed down (including lava) via weight

@YinYin thanks for the detailed feedback! and yes, exactly (about the lines disappearing), but i have to agree with you and @NoNiMad , it is probably very counter-intuitive that the tetris lines are not disappearing the 'tetris-way'. I will try to find a solution for that for the post-compo version.
I will also add a view of the falling blocks on the big screen as @Orteil and @shubart suggested.

Big fan of the concept. The game feels like it could really use a bit more polish but that's true for most jam games. The graphics are cute, the game is fun to play and it certainly follows the theme. Good job!

Nice game! I had much fun playing with a friend!
I think it could be nice to get some place to reach with the unicorn :)

Good:
- The unicorn is really sweet.
- The combination works great. The Tetris part is basically a world builder for a platformer.
- The ways through blocks are really a smart move from you! Makes it alot more interesting.

Not so good:
- Often times height differences of the ways through a block get you stuck since you can't jump high enough.
- Sound effects are a bit too repetitive.
- The lava is going up way to fast. Maybe slow it down a bit if it gets to close to the player?

I really like this entry. I had not too much fun because I died way too often but the combination and thought that is put into this are absolutely great! Good job.

Wow, it is an excellent game. I very much had liked the concept, it is exciting to build level of blocks independently. But because of the fact that passes won't join difficult to pass. Maybe shown on the mini map where the entrance to the block will be?

I also have a [game about Tetris](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/last-stand-1), it's important for me to hear your opinion

Great game and SO challenging! It's so difficult to concentrate on two different gameplays, but definitely fun to play. Our team also created a Tetris-related game: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/tanktris Try it out, please! :)

This is a pretty cool idea, when I finally started being able to do both things at once it became very satisfying, but I was still pretty bad :D. Nice job with the game!

OMG iz awesome! And it has unicornz! x2 the awesome!
I really liked the idea here! But it really escalates quickly, maybe give some more slack in the beginning so that a n00b (yeah the other peepz, not me....) has a chance to get really hooked.
But I lööööve the idea and the feel here! Well done good Sir/Madame!

I had a few criticisms and then I noticed I could destroy blocks by hitting space - that solved a bunch of them  I'm such a dummy...

I love the building and climbing combination, but I crushed so many poor unicorns due to muscle memory (and I don't even play that much tetris)... I found the weight mechanic fairly confusing, but other than that I had a lot of fun. (Except that newline sound - that's the bane of my existence. It crushes my soul and decimates my eardrums).

I really loved the idea and, besides some things, I really enjoyed it! I have some comments:

-It's weird that lines don't disappear as in Tetris.

-As I don't know where I'm in the map, I always start going to an edge to avoid the first block to crush me. Some position on the map, or "ghost block" to show where is going to fall.

-At one moment, after one line was pushed, I was stuck between to pieces without dying. I then realized that if I focused in the tetris part I could do great in the game.

-Calculating the pieces inner connectivity should be done once the piece is placed, or at least have the ghost block I mentioned earlier could help to build paths.

Congratulations!

Really interesting combination of genres! But it definitely needs some balancing cause it's too hard at the moment.

Good job!

Awesome! I like the mechanics and artstyle with SFX are good. I wish there be some kind of background music.

WOw Awesome Game, lovely graphics and very simple mechanics. The downside was the unicorn controls, it was a bit difficult to double jump. Maybe you could use double jump anywhere and not ony near walls, or you could use wall jumps and slide slowly when falling near walls.
Great Job!
