Story

In runaway corruption you play as the last survivor of a group of mages. The land is corrupted and the corruption has destroyed everything. You are trapped in a field with corruption all around. From the corruption ghouls emerge and attack you. Even if you can fend off the ghouls, the corruption is toxic and will harm you if you get too close.

Mechanics

Ghouls emerge from the corrupted tiles. The more tiles you have, the more ghouls will come out--making the game significantly harder.

There are temporary upgrades for the mage's abilities. As well as hearts to replenish his health.

Exploding a bomb with 'space' will remove the corrupted tiles, helping you manage the number of ghouls that spawn.

Feelings

I wish I had been able to add more content to this, like other types of enemies. However, the game I made on Saturday was pretty horrible, so I pivoted and made this game instead. As such, I only had Sunday for working on it. I'm still pretty happy with the result. At least it looks better than most of my games and I learned a lot from both the failed attempt on Saturday and the successful attempt on Sunday.

Plans

I don't know how much I will work on this after the jam. I'll probably fix things that people notice and add a little more content.

I had some ideas for other types of mages--like one that grows foliage to push back the corruption. Maybe I'll add stuff like that.

Consistent art, and you weren't lying when you said the difficulty ramps up with the more tiles you own, i imagine a really good player would be amazing to watch.

Great work for one day! It even has a tutorial o_O Seriously, restarting from scratch should have been an incredibly hard decision to make, but the result is pretty good.

Other than dying under suspicious circumstances a few times, it's really fun. Watching the ghouls burn for a moment before they disappear is really satisfying, and mashing fireballs is just fun in general. The game looks and plays very well, great work!

Fun game!
I found it a bit easy to exploit because you can shoot in multiple directions at once. Just mash all arrow keys constantly! Also I didn't really understand what the bomb was.
Otherwise fun game with good atmosphere. Good job!

Smooth sound, graphic and overall feeling. The only suggestion i have is map shape, it feels clunky. In rest, my appreciation.

Nice game! :) I think that pushing two directions at a time should shoot balls in a 45 degree angle though

A really great game. Feels really nice to burn those ghouls and the music really added to the theme. Also really liked the power ups and the bombs.

Think the difficulty ramps up a bit too quickly and becomes almost impossible to progress past the first minute or so.

It runs really well and it definitely has a wonderful consistent art and sound style. I enjoyed the gameplay and liked how you could blow up parts of the tiles to give yourself breathing room. The tutorial is also very much appreciated.

This is really well put together! My only complaint is that you should give the player some invincibility frames after being hit!

I like this, reminds me of games like Kikikaikai and other two-stick shooters! Had a fun time, but the hitboxes are a bit unforgiving :(

(by the way there's a bomb icon that appears at the right side of the screen sometimes. Is there a way to use bombs somehow then ?)

I like it in overall, I like this type of games. I would be nice if the mage keeps shooting with the keys pressed. The graphics are a bit simple, but they work as intended. Nice extra mechanics. Good jbo!

Small and simple! I had fun playing ;)
Although it got a bit impossible towards the end or maybe I just suck at playing :P
But overall Nice art and all the best :)

@priom

The bomb icon indicates when you can press 'space' to make an explosion.

Awesome simple game... took a few tries to get "good" at it but once I got going I was able to kill large groups of the bag guys with ease. The difficultly definitely ramps up! I enjoyed it. I know you said you can't rate games until tonight but when you get a chance let me know what you think of my game: https://asimovindustries.itch.io/slithering-secrets

Fun game! There were a couple times when I got hit that felt unfair - perhaps the character's hitbox could be smaller?

Cool game! bold colour choices which makes it easy to figure out what's going on. Might want to add a mention in the description about using space to detonate. I found it by trying a couple of likely options, but still. It's fun to play and I find it incredible that one person can make this kind of thing in a day!
Please check out the game my team made when you have time! :) https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/squire-wheres-my-sword

This was one of the most fun games I've played, something about blasting those creeps felt really satisfying to me!

One thing I would like to see is some visual/ audio feedback for when you lose health. I kept dying, not realizing I had only one heart left.

That aside, I was very impressed!

great compo entry! The game mechanics (particularly that you could fire multiple directions at once) were interesting, but definitely not bad!
