2019 Game - Ludum Dare 44 by FatCrow

[raw]
made by FatCrow for LD 44 (COMPO)

Pong Tournament Universe:

Pong Tournament Universe was created by Spencer Rieu for the Ludum Dare 44 Compo Competition.

This game is about a dad and his journey to save his family from aliens. Life is the currency of the universe and you must battle to save you and your family.

This game has a single player story mode and a local two player mode. The style of the game is a classic pong meets platformer fighting game. Move around the terrain to keep the ball out of your net, and encounter different enemies along your way. Have some fun bashing and smashing your way to victory.

Enter the universe or mortal pong tournaments, help this dad rescue his family and become the next Pong Tournament Universe Champion.

Please enjoy your time playing!

I wanted to test the game, but the intro scene of story mode seems broken :/

I was able to get the game running, and play! It took me a little bit to figure out how to score against the first guy, but once I got my strategy down, it was fast paced and fun. Good job!

Good sense of humor and graphics, a nice take on pong. Plays smooth, and I enjoy the triple jump.

Love the art style and the overall mood.

One issue: I was only able to play the game in 1920x1080. It looks like in some other smaller resolutions, you're unable to see the text at the bottom of the screen at the beginning of story mode.

@marcus-dubreuil thank you for the feedback! It is true I only tested the game in 1920x1080. This will be something I work at fixing in my future games so I really appreciate you pointing it out! Thanks for playing my game also!

Pretty funny game, I like the story line and the voice effects, quite the retro feeling. The pong game got a bit repetitive after a while, wish there were more twists to the mechanics. The graphics are nice too. Good entry

Really great stuff! The pixel graphics were really good (particularly the backgrounds), and I loved the varied opponents. I also liked how I could leave my goal to try and score (and inevitably miss and lose). The audio had a very high level of quality. I might recommend lowering the matches to first to 3 since they dragged a little bit. But great stuff!

Fun entry!

I absolutely burst out laughing at the human and alien voices the first time!

The pong game was fairly simple but did its job. Dialog and graphics were both pretty nice too.

Great entry!

Implementing the theme and the game into a story is a neat idea! The pong game feels amazing in 2-player, but I felt like in single player, the first enemy is able to block almost all my shots. Giving the pong ball speed felt like a downside as well, since the enemy is able to deflect it back because of its huge size and the player has to 'fall down" at a slower pace than the ball which means limited control if the ball goes on the upper part of the level.

Maybe that is just me being bad though :D Love the artstyle and the triple jump mechanic as well.

Those alien noises LOL. That first rival is the master of blocking all shots, by simply standing still and looking intimidation. In all seriousness, his hitbox/size needs to be lowered. Other than him, everyone else is actually pretty fun to play against, especially the last guy. Nice game!

Ok I tested the game again, the title screen was not broken but the game only run in high resolution I guess.

That was really fun, the art and sounds are great (especially alien voices). Good mood there :)

@sebastien-bourgeois I really really appreciate you coming back and giving it a second chance! Thank you so much for your feedback! I only tested the game in one resolution and setting during the competition, and this is something I am going to work on in my future games! Thanks again!

@liauj I think you are totally right the first enemy could have been 4 or 5 pixels smaller in size and that would have been much better for the first level of difficulty. I really appreciate the time you took to review my game! Thank you so much for giving it a play!

Challenging game. The story was nice. I wish the buttons were in the same screen position on the HTML game so I could click through and get started after watching the story the first time. I like the pixel art, nice colors. The music was enjoyable too, and fit the mood of the game.

Haha - this game is super funny. Nice job capturing a lighthearted feel while your family's life hangs in the balance. I'm also impressed with the level of polish. The fact that you have incorporated both a 2-Player mode AND a story mode is pretty insane for a LD jam. Not to mention the inclusion of an intro and story! The music was also pretty sick. Nice job - I had fun playing!

First off. The voice acting is spectacular!
I didn't realize it was actually PONG at first. What is that weird red big thingy? I thought it was an enemy!
Anyways I didn't manage to score once :frowning2: but still great game. Good job!

I think it should be arrows for player two :)
Btw, love the font with pixelated shadow.

Very good entry, nice intro, great graphics. The game is hard, though. I could not beat the first alien, only scored twice against him.
I think it will be more satisfying to play if player moved faster.

@datagreed WOW, I cant believe this one slipped through the cracks! Thank you for pointing this out! I might go and update this for my web build to the correct text. I also do agree with it being a bit hard, if I ever make Pong Tournament Universe 2 I am going to work a lot more on the hardness curve. Thank you very very much for the review!

@skoggy Thank you so much for playing. I agree that the difficulty is something that really needed work on my entry! Thanks for the review! :v:
