9 Lives by mrtnldm
9 Lives!
9 Lives is platformer where a kitty must spend some of its precious 9 lives to advance to next levels. You can buy toys to improve your jumping ability and speed or give you skills like being able to climb obstacles or smack objects.
How to play is embedded to the game.
This is my first game I have created from scratch on my own. Pretty happy how it turned out!
Created by Martin Laidma for Ludum Dare 44
Developed in Unity Graphics are handrawn, scanned and retouched in Photoshop Music and SFX created with vocals, Audacity, https://midi.city/ and https://www.tones.fm/.
Thanks for playing! :)
Known Bug: No sound on Mac when playing WebGL in Safari. Chrome is okay though :)

The physics are a bit clunky. But once you got used to it, they are fine. They are a bit weird for a cat.
And next time get a cat for voice-over, it would have been much bettter
Good work!
@paul59 yeah, I agree the plant pot definitely needs some refinement to make it more clear.
@ All of you - thanks for the feedback!
Love the artstyle, really well made for your first own game ^-^
I had a really good moment of joy when I realized I had to knock over the plant pot, haha. Great work!
@meursault Thanks a lot for the constructive criticism. I guess I will give the direct controls a try next time. Although it has always felt weird for me that you can move while jumping.
The graphics and sound effects were great as well!
Thank you for this game
@ioleoso @gamesplusjames appreciate it!
very cute though i liked it
Nice entry!
@ropedog thanks for a super nice review, glad it made you laugh :)
- It has a very high bounce effect when hitting things, it doesn't make much sense haha.
- I couldn't buy more than one item per lvl, which also doesn't made much sense because I had enough lives.
- Why is there a orange bar at the bottom of the screen?
- The Descriptions of the items have many typos
- The cat simply got stuck while I was jumping from one platform to the other. It remained on the walking animation and didn't move anymore.
- The sounds made with the mouth are funny though xD.
* A lot of people were annoyed with the controls. I tried to implement a bit of momentum based realism but that didn't turn out that well. I have always found it weird in platformers to move while in air. I will revise this when I finish and release the game.
* I guess the bounciness was just to show you can't jump up through the platforms.
* That was intentional as also described in the tutorial to give it a little bit of a puzzler effect. You can only choose one toy per level and every level requires one specific skill to make it through.
* The colored strip at the bottom of the level is just a color scheme design element. That's just for the overall visual style and not a gameplay element. Appreciate this point a lot, I can see how it can create confusion sometimes :)
* Thanks for pointing out the typos. I really didn't give anything a proofread :)
* I know this bug. It has to do with incorrect collider placement/usage.
* Thanks a lot. I had a lot of fun recording those.
Seriously, thanks a lot! I really appreciate this kind of criticism and feedback!
The reason why games usually allow moving in the air is the precision of landing which is IRL possible because you can precisely position your legs, while in games you are actually controlling the character as a point and rely on it's bounding box to be in the right position.
Finding the right balance between totally unrealistic and completely realistic is the whole point of game design
Now about your game. The graphics are nice :)
However, the fact that you can pass some levels only with a single upgrade, does not really make it a choice. It'd be great if there were more options. But it's ok.
All in all, sweet entry. The human meow sounds are awesome
Keep up the good work.
