Sacrifice Society by SirMichel

[raw]
made by SirMichel for LD 43 (JAM)

Your village has the ability to sacrifice its villagers to the gods. By doing this all villagers benefit of the experience of the sacrificed villager. Sacrificing strong warriors keeps your society strong and healthy. This is the only way to defeat the Demon Lords, which are permanently threatening the village.

Avoid loosing experienced villagers in fights against the demons! By sacrificing them all of the society can benefit! And the sacrificed villagers will live on in the experience they pass to the other people. And once again new villagers will see the light of the day.

We made all assets by ourselves. We used the Unity Engine as game engine and our small recording studio to create the music and the sound effects. We also used Paint.net to create the sprites.

Very innovative, loved your use of using townsfolk as extra lives per say. Loved the voice acting. Would buy this if developed further! Great job!

This was very good, I will say that there were a couple movement bugs that I encountered where it wouldn't respond, but other than that it was quite enjoyable.

I don't understand how to play the game...

Once I select a villager to go into the dungeon, how do I get back out?

I really enjoyed the music, but I wish more effort was spent on the level design. There were quite a lot of empty rooms and on my first dungeon the boos was in the first room. Great game otherwise though.

@great-bobleny, you have to kill the big baddie, the demon detector in the top left is actually a demon compass, follow it to find and kill the boss. The crux of it is your players don't heal, so you go as far as possible with one character and then sacrifice it after a level to salvage some of its experience.

The strategy is very straightforward but the instructions don't make it immediately clear. I enjoyed the game and especially enjoyed the music. Thanks!

P.S. Your only link is to your post-LD game, which was worked on outside of competition time. I know it's only bugfixes and tuning right now, but if you keep working on it, reviewers in the future could be rating a much different experience than day 1 reviewers.

@sky-coding I assumed once you killed the boss, the game was over. I died the first time I fought him. So I thought you had to go in, level up, then come out and sacrifice yourself to level everyone else up. By doing that enough times, you would end up with a super strong warrior.

I made it to level 9. Unfortunately, after each boss fight, because my HP was too low to kill another, I had to just sacrifice myself so I could use the level 1ish character that spawned. I know one of my characters healed while I was in the dungeon, but I couldn't figure out how to do it again.

It wasn't quite what I thought it was, but it was still a fun game. I was really hoping the cards you picked up were like abilities that would be transferred to everyone else in the village upon sacrifice.

For some reason, I couldn't get the episode, "Learning Curve" from SG-1 out of my head...

@great-bobleny once you entered the dungeon you can only leave again by finding and defeating the boss in the dungeon. Your Demon Detector always points towards him
edit: should have read further down since sky-coding already explained this :D

@sirmichel Yes he (playing the odds) did. However, I understood the demon detector when I first played; it is a pretty simple feature and the description under "controls" does an adequate job of explaining it.

My confusion was do to my misunderstanding of what happens when you defeat the demon. I thought it was the end of the game, not the end of a level.

I really like this game! The concept was great, and I liked the idea of the sacrifices benefiting the entire town. While the art style was nothing to write home about, I really enjoyed the sound effects, and the dungeons are procedural? I barely noticed! You should use the code for the generator for a future game!

Really fun game. The mechanic kinda reminded me of Darkest Dungeon meets Diablo, and it was for the better. Love the implementation of the theme, these sprawling dungeons, and the awesome soundtrack.

Pros :
- Great mechanic and take on the theme
- Awesome soundtrack
- Readable graphics and game in general
- The voice effects when sacrificing villagers

Cons :
- Sacrificing a villager isn't very rewarding (intended ?)
- Combat would benefit from being a little more "juicy" (bigger bullets, screenshake, ...)

On the technical side, I experienced a bug on the WebGL version where I was teleported to the village after having entered the dungeon, resulting in my characters being "locked out in the village". That little issue did not alter my opinion of the game in the slightest though. Great job guys !

@jlv
Thank you for your feedback! Sacrificing a villager makes sense, when the health of the villager is low but he has a high level. Then all other villagers will get half of its experience. It does not make sense to sacrifice level 1 villagers ;)

Had a blast with it! Really missed a map or some recognizable "landmarks" to know if I've traversed a certain path or not.
