Home_1.png

Home is an incremental game based around gathering resources to survive and fix your ship so you can return home. You start by collecting food and getting your bearings. After finding out that your ship is damaged, you start collecting resources to fix it. However, the planet you start on doesn't have all the resources needed to fix every part of your ship that needs it. You fix the one part of your ship that you can, and are able to hold it together just long enough to get to the next planet. You repeat this process until your ship is completely fixed, and you travel back home. As a note: this lore is not presented in the game. Use your imagination.

How did we apply the theme? Since incremental games naturally make you gather more resources at an exponential rate as time goes on, naturally, "The more you have" then the The worse it is". Yeah, it's a stretch, but we really wanted to do an incremental game, and this is the only way we could've rationalized it.

Upgrades only exist for the first planet. We didn't have enough time to get them for the rest. Sorry :(

Home requires Java 8 or later

AS A NOTE: The game auto-saves. It's handy. The save file is saved in different locations depending on your platform. On Windows, it's in your AppData\Roaming folder. On macOS, it's in ~/Library/Application Support. On Linux/Unix/Any Other Platform with a JVM, it's in your user directory, as a hidden folder. If you have any problems with it, you can go there and delete it, or run the jar file like this:

java -jar Home-JD.jar -newgame

This will force a new game.

This was our first attempt at making a game, so it was a great learning experience. There were many times where we had to tear down a lot of code we made and essentially start from scratch. Overall, while this isn't the most technically sound and complete game, we are proud of the result. We were only given 72 hours (where we only really utilized close to 24 hours!), and we made a (mostly) functional game.

Obviously it's far from perfect, but looking past that, we hope you enjoy the result! Whether or not we will come back to this game is still up in the air, but who knows! Maybe you'll see us in a future Ludum Dare, using all of the new knowledge we've acquired while doing this event.

Enjoy!

Congrats on doing your first ludum dare!! That's great! :)
The game seems to be just clicking on food and rocks with little change, but it was fun and the song is nice! good job!

Great music, and great title art. The idea of clicking on different resources with various timing considerations for each click, it's not a bad idea. How about with fast pacing and a wide resource variety from the outset?

Congrats on the first Ludum Dare game, and welcome to the community. The game was pretty fun, though it lacked variations. Overall a pretty good experience, but there are improvements to make. Keep working, and just maybe you can get top 10!

Here is my thoughts about your game:

- I like the idea.
- I miss some sound effects.
- Some way to see my progression (how much resources I need to go to the next planet) would be good.
- The music is good.

I hope this helps. =)

I enjoyed the music, and I think I see the direction in which you headed with the game, which is nice! It could use some polish but for a first time, well done!

Good first attempt.
The song is also nice!
Maybe consider using something else than Java next time(Gamemaker? Unity?)

I don't want to sound stupid, but I couldn't figure out how to get off the first planet, and all I could do was click the plant to increase my food. Could you comment me the controls? I'd love to play properly!

@baconinvader In order to move on to the next planet, you need to collect a certain amount of each of the four resources. You only start with one. As you collect more of a certain resource, another one will pop up. Once you've collected a certain amount of all four, then you can move on to the next planet. If you're willing to do a little digging into the code, you can find the amounts needed for everything.

I agree that it's not completely obvious what to do. We were planning to have text pop up to provide hints and add to the story, however due to unforeseen circumstances, we were not able to implement that in time.

what was the goal of it? I pushed the plant a couple of times, but it just increased my food and that was it? I gave up at around 15 food.

It's an incremental/clicker game. Think Cookie Clicker or Clicker Heros or AdVenture Capitalist. We took a slightly different approach to it however. You got the point, it takes a while and probably not balanced very well.

Nice little game! I included it in my Ludum Dare 40 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look. :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_cfsd64xFk

with openjdk-jre8, I get this error while tring to start the game:
```sh
$ java -jar Home-LD.jar
Erreur : impossible de trouver ou charger la classe principale com.github.jmatcj.ld40.LDJam40
```

Translation from a human knowing next to nothing to Java: "Error: impossible to find or load the main class com.github.jmatcj.ld40.LDJam40"

Yeah I think I screwed up the Linux detection. My apologies.
