Experience Points by TJ Reynolds

[raw]
made by TJ Reynolds for LD 40 (JAM)

This game can be described as Backwards Pokemon. In order to win, you must capture the lowest level "Monster" possible and fight with him, until he reaches the next level.

Below is a link to a google drive folder. A link to download a .jar file is available. Google Drive Link: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1TXdRZF9ZkyCfriSX2Zc99i4ENzady-WV?usp=sharing I DID NOT NOT ENTIRELY FINISH THIS. The game is only about 80% finished, so i'll be working on finishing that in the coming week. Remember to only evaluate "evaluateLD40.jar" and not "newLD40.jar". The game is playable, but slightly boring because it was not finished.

I FORGOT TO ADD THE INSTRUCTIONS: Use WASD to move the little red dot and occasionally a battle will occur. If it's the game's first battle, go to items and use the net. This is the only item you can actually use in the current version of the game.

Also in the folder is a debugging survey. If you find any bugs, please complete the forum describing what the bug was.

You can also (please do) take a survey I have created for my game so that in the future the games that I submit will be of a higher quality. The game play itself is quite bad, I will admit. I am definitely taking the project on after LD though, so maybe save a link to my game and play it in a month or two, and it'll be much much better.

Ok, as I see the project is unfinished, but it doesn't mean it is bad.

The current problems, of course, are graphics and the UI.

But I want you to make battle rate chance higher. I was wandering for about 1 minute before my first fight. I am not sure if you should use default random functions, it could be a pseudo-random function which makes the appearance rate higher each time you didn't find a monster. Or something like that.

Here goes the next problem: I can't understand what is happening. You should add some info when you are using some items (net, for example). Like "you can't catch it", "you failed" and etc.
You should definitely add some feeling of turn-based combat. Through the sounds or graphics, it doesn't matter.

You should rework map and movement. Add diagonal movement or make a character not to stop when pressing two buttons but continue to go.

I am really happy with your serious approach and different surveys, so I think that you want this game to be better, so I am telling you the truth.

Ok, now here is some very **long term** goals and ideas for you.

It's a reversed Pokemon game as you mentioned. Add some towns and quests. It will make all wandering meaningful. Add some real good element-based damage system, with all types of weaknesses and power. Do some game design research and find out what will make your game so special and which mechanics could attract the possible gamer.

I hope you will improve your game quality and hope we will see you in the next Jam.

@interpol, thank you for all of your recommendations. The odds of a battle are supposed to be about 1/300, and without much going on, it can take a while until a battle happens. In the next version I plan on including the shop function, and you'll be able to buy food which, will summon a monster on the next turn. I also plan on animating the characters so that the battles do seem more turn based instead of sudden changes in health. The diagonal movement is a bug, and it's because of they way I work with the keys. It should be included in my next update with the shop and all the battle items like the potion. I also plan on adding a village in the forest and eventually a boss on the mountain of the second island. Again, thank you for your recommendations for this game and my next ones.
