Dovregubben by Ava Skoog

[raw]
made by Ava Skoog for LD 44 (JAM)

Can you evade the troll for long enough for the sun to rise and turn it to stone before you perish, and can you afford risking your life by plunging downhill to get ahead of this foe?

2-kopi.png

A loose but working interpretation of the theme. Your life is not currency in the sense of money, but you can choose to "pay with your life" (to an extent) by jumping several platforms down when the risk seems worth it.

I usually do three day jams, but I was moving to a new home this weekend and missed the first day—still happy I got something together!

Sounds from zapsplat.com.

Partial melody by Edvard Grieg (In the hall of the mountain king / I dovregubbens hall) is public domain. I used a MIDI and cut out a part of the song and assigned my own instrumentation and tempo and made it loop properly.

Controllers 🎮

Keyboard only. Arrows or AD to move left and right, down arrow or S to jump straight down.

Oh i love this one a lot! Adorable graphics and fun (and stressful) gameplay. You should definitely rate other games for your game to be more visible!

@grllle: Thank you! Still stuck on a limited mobile connection since we haven’t got a broadband in place in the new apartment we moved to this weekend yet, so I can’t download games right now, but as soon as it’s in place (hopefully in a couple of days), I’ll start playing and rating as many entries as I can! c:

This is so wonderfully frustrating. I tried so many times to survive long enough for the sun to rise. Is it possible or am I just terrible at it? Love the graphics, and that music sets me on edge whilst the troll is breathing down my neck. I'm determined to survive so I'm going back in for more punishment. Wish me luck.

Good stuff :8ball:

@oddballdave: Thank you, both for your kind words and for your perseverance! 🐱 It’s possible! Take those risks and jump straight down because you can’t outrun it from side to side as it picks up its pace~

Really nice graphics. Inertion feels pretty natural.
Is it even possible to win at it or is it just me?

Graphics are just awesome! Nice touch is randomly generated positions of platforms.

Controls could be more reactive - there is a delay between pressing a button and turning around. It could be intentional (character slides on the snow) but it would be better if character turns immediately (and still can slide turned to wanted direction). I believe it would feel better with this little change.

Anyway, great job!

Simple but fun! Got pretty suspenseful at times, took a few tries to beat. I like the paper cutout feel of the graphics and the music choice fits well.

So fun! And cute!
I found myself wanting to slap the keyboard a lot, I was very into the game :D
Also I think falling a large distance doesn't give you much of an advantage, since the troll spawns immediately on the same platform argh.

So it takes strategic planning to beat it, I had to plan my route. Very impressive Ava!! Well done!
