Good job.
I felt like playing atari or something like that.
The game is unforgiving which suits old games.
Sound fits the theme, and art too.
Even if I sprites don't look familiar.
Hitboxes a clear issue though. And shooting in the last direction you moved felt strange... I only survived one day ... didn't see anything see past that ...
Loosing all upgrades (today) just feels so unbearable.
I didn't really understand what any of the upgrades where supposed to do - some explanation would be a good addition.
The rounds with the red guys where really hard when they moved quickly - I think that that's kind of unfair, as it is possible depending on their spawn rates to be completely screwed - although maybe that's the point? ;)
Overall, it's a nice retro game and the difficulty is mostly fitting.
The upgrade loop had the impossible task of keeping me playing after the second round. You'd needed to come up with some proper ingenious abilities to overcome the crude controls.
It is an old idea, but upgrades which improve the visuals and gameplay features, in a 4th wall breaking manner, are a possibility. Imagine buying a "smooth movement" upgrade; now, that would have made me give a few more goes.
