Love Love! Space Attack by Random-storykeeper

[raw]
made by Random-storykeeper for LD 41 (JAM)

A person moves game files around on the computer, but the copying process gets interrupted, corrupting the files and causing two video game worlds (Dating Sim and Bullet Hell) to merge. Commander Dan Makú, fighting for the intergalactic war, finds himself dating a girl, Ren Aishi, for some reason. All she can see is the dialogue choices he chooses, unaware that the alien war may be having an impact on her, too.

Controls

  • WASD or Arrow Keys to move
  • Space or Z to shoot

Gameplay

  • When asked a question, one of the answers will make Ren happier and grant you an extra hit point. The rest will cause you to lose one.

Hilarious...but super creepy! I think you managed to combine 3 incompatible genres...horror, dating, and space attack. And it is truly awesome

I really enjoy this game for its music, its art, and its humor. However, it sometimes became a bit frustrating to play, because one mistake can mean getting hit many times. I think this game may have benefited from clearing the screen of bullets, or at least giving the player more invincibility frames, after the player gets hit.

@trivial171 Yeah, the game definitely needed some more testing as it does get ridiculously hard. Having invincibility frames and the ability to clear bullets would help ease the difficulty. I was also thinking that the bullets from the squids could spawn less often too. Thanks!

It's really cool to see a visual novel mix. My only gripe is it takes awhile to actually get any choices. Besides that, nice job!

@Raiyumi I think we're considering lowering the length of enemy waves, possibly making them start off short and get slightly longer. We're big fans of your work, by the way. Thanks for your feedback!

This game is pretty fun and the graphics and the music are great as well! The controls are a bit floaty but balancing out controls would have taken more time than LD would've made possible probably ^^ Only bigger problem was that bullets weren't visible for me when I played the game in my browser (Chrome), making me wonder why I was losing all the time ;_;

Haha oh boy, I didn't expect her to turn in to some sort of alien. I really enjoyed the music. Nice blend of two genres!

Great job with this one! It's interesting to see another take on the dating sim and shooter/bullet hell mix. I really like how you pulled it off - the 'backstory' is a wonderful idea, and the fact that you managed to keep the two games relatively separate meant that their eventual merging was even more special.

One change I would suggest is to give more of a downtime before the dialogue options, or at least some indication that a choice is about to appear. I accidentally selected the wrong option by firing too much... only once, admittedly! But still, I think it'd help to make the game a bit more forgiving.

... On a side note, the C.U.P.I.D. thing is a really strange and funny coincidence! Great minds think alike, eh? We tossed about a load of different ideas for the acronym, including 'Chaotic Utility Perfect for Inducing Death', 'Certified Undertaker Paid for Inflicting Doom.', 'Creator Undecided on Pseudonym Intended for Dare', 'Caravan Unintentionally Parked for Incorrect Duration', and 'Creator of Umbrellas that Perspire, leading to Inordinate Dampness'. I imagine he'd pick a different acronym every time, getting crazier and crazier throughout!

Anyway, sorry to ramble on and on... In the end, I think you all did a great job! It's such a fresh take on the theme, combining two genres in such a different (yet entirely obvious) way.

What a cute concept! Fun little shoot-em-up, cute bouncy music, obvious metaphor for breaking past the barriers of the heart. Difficulty starts ramping up a bit fast. Pretty fun OH GOD WHAT IS HAPPENI

Interesting game, the bullet hell part of the game was really challenging and rewarding at the same time. The dating sim part was pretty nice but could be a little more fleshed out in my opinion. Graphics and audio is pretty nice, i like how our health is indicated by Rei's appearance. In overall it's a pretty fun, cute game.

Fun game, had to download the windows version as the webgl version in Chrome did not show any of the bullet. Sound and Art really fit with the theme and the dialog is pretty funny too.

This is a really great combination. I didn't get anywhere close to a win condition, if there is one, but I was really compelled to get to the next question! I also couldn't help myself from choosing some of the less than optimal responses ha ha! The shooter side of it is well implemented, though the ship is perhaps a little slow to accelerate. I couldn't get past the squidy guys, but I had a lot of fun with this.

Super fun game, really enjoyed playing. When I first saw the game I thought you had to talk to the girl as you were multitasking the ship, but I really liked the mechanic of regaining life with the dating sim. Good job!

Haha, this was fun! The title is a great catch from the start! I didn't do too well in game however, Ren transformed into a gorgon (or was she one all along?) a couple times. Couldn't really obtain a 'good ending' though. On the shooter side, the gameplay is, I think, quite sluggish, I would have liked a faster ship ;)
Overall: quite fun game that could have a little extra polish ;)

Hahah this is pretty fun! I couldn't get anywhere close to winning. The 4th stage (or when the dudes with the tentacles spawn) seemed to be where it got a bit too hard to dodge some bullet patterns. I liked that Ren Aishi's expression changes depending on your choice/when you get hit, that was a nice touch. The music was nice and peaceful. I think I'd want the dating sim questions to happen more often so it'd be easier to experience that aspect of the game more often. Overall good job!

Hey this was really fun on stream, great game!

Mixing the dating sim and space bullet hell genres is very unique, and it turned out very well! :yum:

It was quite punishing on the shooter side but I'm not too good at those, It felt pretty full on at the start for me to get into the swing of things.

Otherwise, honestly great entry - Really bamboozled me with the face wasn't expecting that!

Before playing your game I wouldn't have been able to believe that such combination of genres is actually possible!
