Chopping Block by speakertone

[raw]
made by speakertone for LD 43 (JAM)

Welcome to Chopping Block! The point of this game is to create a dish that follows certain rules established in each level. You must "chop" the ingredients that don't fit with the rules. You have a certain number of chops, all of which must be used, and not every level has a single solution. Let's get chopping!!

CLARIFICATION:

We realize that some things were not explained in-game very well: - The rules established in each level carry over to all other levels; they are cumulative - If you click on the "?" box at any point, you will be given a list of all the rules

It also seems that there is a bug where the buttons get a bit finicky at certain resolutions, so we greatly apologize for this inconvenience.

We thank you for all the feedback we've received so far! It really helps us know what we need to improve on!

Thank you!

I had to learn that the rules built up over time, and I thought that there were too many rules to follow after a while. However, I had fun figuring out the mechanics and the graphics were great. Good game!

That was fun! It took me a minute to figure out that the rules were cumulative but overall good job with the demo introducing the concept, and enough of a challenge to get me through to the end. Good use of the theme as well.

I really enjoyed the game, and I beat it. Honestly one of the best i've seen today.

Seems like a nice game, but I got stuck on level 3 because of a bug, couldn't chop the meat by clicking on it.

Fun game. Definitely kept my attention for longer than I thought it would. I wanted to go back through and write all the requirements down in notepad as I went. I think it was the music that kept me going.

Interesting small game. Love the remembering of the rules.

A little challenging, but not to hard.

However, for me the theme is not really present. Sorry.

The tutorial is kinda awesome! Before I get into the praise, FIX THE NEXT BUTTON. I have to press it then go off of it, then go back on it and press. And it still may not fire the press event. So, I try that a few more times and it finally presses the button. With that being said, you guys put together an AWESOME invisible tutorial!! You learn at the beginning, which is what you expect, and it's not like annoying. You're just reading the rules. Then, when they disappear, you remember the rules because they were done well. And if you don't, you give a little prompt as a reminder. Fantastic implementation.

Nice game! No wonder that so many people can't cook, it's really hard ;) I wish i would find those recipes in cooking books :D

@nobongo We've noticed that the game seems to have issues with certain screen resolutions, which sometimes results in the buttons not working properly. For some reason changing the window size of the browser you're playing it in tends to fix it. Try that if you haven't yet, and see if it works any better. If it still doesn't, let us know, so we can look into it.

definitely a fun puzzle game, theme is kind of there. also there seems to be a "dead space" where i cant click on any ui elements on it so had to find the spots that are not covered. finished the game and felt good after playing. 10/10 would play again

Great great game! One thing I think would be great for players is a list with the rules, somewhere on the screen. Maybe make so the player needs to press a button with the mouse to see the list, if you think memory is important.

Really great entry! Very clever puzzles. Congratulations!

Very forgiving if I didn't remember the rules of previous level. Was fun. Thanks!

After playing a bit more, until the last level, gotta say... You have a great mind/team for game/level design. It really seems like you lead us to some design intended mistakes. The balance is perfect for my taste as well. Awesome and congrats again!

Nice little game, thanks for the note about the resolution bug. The rules were interesting, I think with more time spent reinforcing them the game would make a lot more sense. I ended up intentionally failing the level to see what rule I missed, so maybe a punishment for that would be in order. Good job.

Great game but I'm not sure it was for me, the memory game concept stressed me out!

Works pretty well, the puzzles were engaging and I liked having to remember all the rules, reminds me of Kingsing, which is a dutch drinking game with cards haha

Great game ! I definitely did not expect it to be so incremental, and would have been totally lost without the help menu. However, it was really well thought with a lot of ideas, and discovering the next trick level after level was a lot of fun.

Pros :
- Great concept, and simple but fun gameplay
- Nice visual and audio package
- Incremental difficulty : constraints combine to create mind-destroying situations, and that's for the better.
- Definitely challenging past a certain point.

Cons :
- No real link with the theme
- Definitely challenging past a certain point ?

All in all, great job !

Overall good job! Very interesting puzzle ideas and it was fun to play. Glad you actually included some instructions, a lot of games here have been lacking clear goals and tutorials. Well done!

I didn't realize until a little while in that I actually needed to apply the rules from previous levels - I just happened to be chopping correctly haha. Anyway, enjoyed the game - was fun once I got the hang of it. Nice job!

Very fun puzzle game. I got stuck at level 12

A solid game, however the later levels all had the same strategy for me, by just choosing the chicken and removing either the tomatoes or the lemons. I like the idea of it and I think it was executed well. Nicely done!

After I got my head around what I was supposed to do it played well. Challenging but with simple mechanics.

Overall I enjoyed the game, the difficulty curve felt rewarding when you successfully solved an extremely filled screen first try. It is a fairly intensive memory test when you get to the later levels, however this increased the fun of the game for me, and i would like to see more levels made for it.

I did find that in the really full levels the bottom row of buttons were not clickable, however you could solve all the levels without clicking any so all's good.

The artwork was simplistic and overall fairly good and appealing.

Good job making such a fun game that is also quite difficult.

Very interesting idea! There were a bit too many rules so in the end it was mostly some trial and error to figure out the relevant rules again. But the idea is very well executed.

Came beck to check and expected higher ratings for your game. I loved the design and rules. Well, to each his own. I still love this game and will keep an eye on your other works. =] Best of luck to you!
