IMPORTANT NOTICE

A version of the game has been released after the deadline of Ludum Dare. This new version only fixes one major game breaking bug and nothing else. The issue was that when you replay the game after your first time playing, no fish were spawning, and the fixing of this issue goes with the competitions rules. I have left up the original files marked (old) so you can see the difference with playing to confirm the only thing changed is the bug fix. Once again this is allowed by the rules of the competition, as I have not added in any content or anything else in this new build of the game. Thanks.

The Game

Extreme Tower Fishing 2018™ is a high octane experience not for the faint hearted. An intense balance between the 2 most competitive game genres, fishing simulation and tower defense, will have you perched on the edge of your seat until your very last life. A combination of genres unlike any other will strip you down to your core and reveal who you really are, a fighter or a fisher. So grab your fishing rods and you hook buckets, and prepare for Extreme Tower Fishing 2018™ experience!

This is our 4th entry into Ludum Dare and the process this time was insanely smooth. Everything on time, working and generally fitting together perfectly led for a pleasant and less stressful experience overall. Tweet @Jagtekgames and tell us what you think of the game!

Controls

  • Hold to charge rod power, and release to cast.
  • When a fish touches the bobber, click to reel in.
  • Use the 'Fish' and 'Defend' buttons to navigate screens.
  • Click on spaces to bring up the buy menu for towers.
  • Click on placed towers to bring up the upgrade menu.

Important Information

Fish to get money in order to buy towers. You do get money for killing enemies however at the start of the game it is not enough to get started and you will need to fish in order to establish an economy. The tackle box tower shoots out a medium projectile quite slowly, the hook bucket sends out lower damage hooks rapidly, and the tnt box shoots out tnt crates which cause splash damage to all nearby enemies. Enemies health scale overtime so death is inevitable, and you can only upgrade a 3 times!

This seems more like a tower defense game with a fishing minigame than necessarily a fusion of genres, but it does work well. However, on my second playthrough, only about seven fish spawned in and then no more showed up.

The only criticism I really have is with respect to graphics: it isn't too noticeable in this game, but it suffers from a stylistic choice that I personally feel is undesirable: multiple resolutions of pixel art, which often doesn't look too good.

@SamuelDeboni Thanks for playing the game, may I ask what you mean as you can switch to fishing while the tower defense is still going on, if you mean on the same screen then I agree with you in hindsight and that is definitely something we will consider working towards at a later date. Really liked the combination, defending was balanced quite nicely. Maybe show how much upgrades cost? Had fun playing, nice job! :)

Great!
I think it actually fixes one of my biggest pet peeves with the tower defenses (a genre that I love/hate) which is that you end up in a death spiral when you don't get money from the guys you miss. When I first played I didn't realize that there was a tower defense game at all, though because I didn't fully read the instructions on the LD page (which I know is my own fault but it's nice if the instruction is in the game itself.) It would be great if there were levels to beat and a more finely tuned difficulty curve that didn't always overwhelm me, but as a jam game, this is fantastic.

Yeah, i feel like fishing and defending are two separate games. Also i can't understand much of what's going on, you should improve the graphics.
But, the idea was good, and the mechanics work nicely. Good job!

I thought that the two genres work surprisingly well together. It gets quite tense trying to fish while the tower defense is going on in the background. One small issue (already mentioned by someone else) I found was that it's hard to tell how much the upgrades cost. Otherwise, good job!

Switching between defending and fishing was a lot of fun. I like that you cant see the tower side while fishing so you just have to trust that the defenses you placed are working. This is a game I can see myself playing many more times.

I really like it! Graphics were great, fishing was fun, and the background music was good. Biggest suggestion I might make would be to add some sort of indicator to know what's going on with the towers while you're fishing (like a minimap or something). But what you have is amazing for a weekend project!

I think @BryceLTaylor makes a really good point. This is one of the very few TDs were you can earn money outside of the core game and get yourself out of pits. I liked that the fishing was decently skillbased so a better player could earn money faster. It was very satisfying to land a cast right on top of a fish. All in all I thought the fishing really shined, but the TD was kind of standard fare, but I guess that's the idea with this LD theme :)

No bugs on my end, but if I had to toss out an idea to integrate the 2 sides better you could try something along the lines of:

You can store fish or certain fish drop tower upgrades, then you can apply these onto the towers rather than just buying them (you still need $ to buy the actual tower). This could make rarer fish pretty valuable and give the player more of a link between the games than just cash. Just an idea, I'm sure you guys had plenty of great ideas that fell on the cutting room floor!

Thanks for clarifying on the bugs, both of us didn't encounter any bugs after playtesting the updated version, so we are confused by the "ridden with bugs" statement and would love more information. Also we love that idea, the idea that you could get something more from the fishing like upgrades or permanent global increases if we add more levels could be huge so that's a great suggestion!

@roka-josh Upgrading was kind of weird. It seems like the current upgrade levels aren't properly retrieved from the towers. It makes it hard to decide what to upgrade since I don't know what I've already upgraded.

Are there anymore you encountered, because riddled implied there are more and we would like to iron them out before the post jam version. Thanks for your help!
