Self Golf by SecondDimension

[raw]
made by SecondDimension for LD 41 (COMPO)

This game wants to ask you one question... do you Self Golf?
Self Golf is a platforming golf game where you are the ball, and the only way to jump is to hit yourself with your golf club. Everything was made by me in 48hrs, and all controls are explained in the tutorial.

Awesome idea, very cute.

A little bit sluggish in my notebook, but that's probably my open Unity Editor's fault here.
I'll give it a go in my desktop later.

Congratulations! :D

I really liked self golf! Did the an entire 9 holes with a score or -1.
I don't really see the need for the main character to move.
Very satisfying sound when you hit yourself.
The levels get a bit dull, would like some different colours on the levels. Tint the images differently?
THe golf ball looks a bit grumpy, fits the game really good :smiley_cat:

Nice graphic style, music as well.
It is not so fun to play, ball itself does not act like ball.
Something there is missing for me, but dont know what.

Hahah a great game, an impressive amount of content for a weekend. Great Job. Thanks for playing my game also.

This is one of the games I've been looking forward to playing the most, and the end product is just... wow. So much content in just 48 hours! The graphics are great (I love the CRT effect), the gameplay starts off easy and gradually gets trickier, and the entire concept is extremely fun. This is definitely one of my favourites so far.

@manimal - I take your point that the character physics don't behave exactly like a ball, but that was by design really. The idea was a golf game mixed with a platformer, so I didn't just want to make a straight golf game (the platforming jump is replaced by the golf shot).

@persijn - I agree about the level designs, they are all very similar, but honestly that was just a time thing. I may work on this more and do levels with different themes and more scenery. Also the reason the character moves was the same point as above - this was meant to be half platformer and half golf, so that's why the character has a little bit of platform movement as well. Also thanks for noticing the hit sound, I spent ages tweaking that!

@Bruce @Harry-Light - I have added a link to the game without the WebGL CRT shader, this should make it run quicker and also work on older browsers. If you're having trouble and you have time, maybe give that a try instead.

@F1Krazy @quixatocs @Jiri-Hysek @Adam-Wallberg - thank you all for the kinds words!

This is an awesome game! Great idea, great execution, great deployment (web support is always nice)!

Love the graphics, cute little guy :-)

Love the music, love the sound effects, especially the applause after each hole :-D

Very nice concept, interesting what you can do just by using the left mouse, you can get very creative to lower your score. This definitely makes for a great replay value.

Overall a great game, really cool, you have my respect! :-)

I love everything about this game! The graphics, the smooth gameplay, and the music. Really Great Job! The concept is funny too, and follows the theme. Very professional UI and well done.

Wow, a fantastic game! Loving the concept, and the polish is astounding.

Just a small thing, but sometimes I found I made extraneous shots because I couldn't see a bit further to the left or right. Have you thought of adding camera movement to allow the player to see the level a bit better?

Great job!

Pretty solid game. Good work within the time frame. It feels very polished, not like a game made in 48 hours. Great job!

Wow, very polished game in such amount of time. I'm impressed that you found time for small cosmetic details like bees, particles and CRT shader.

Really nice work for just 48 hours. Love how the ball hits itself to move around. I would like for the ability to maybe nudge the camera around a little so I can see where to go next. Also not having a ceiling would be fun, though I could see that breaking the balance a little. Awesome job!

Impressive. One of best compo game around for LD41. Very smouth, cute and easy to play. My advice, try to play around with ball elasticity, sometimes ricochet don't fell right. Overall, good job.

Music and graphics are great. Gameplay idea is original, controls feel very responsive, although i feel like camera is a little to close to the player and it makes it hard to aim properly. Other than that, great entry!

Combining Platformer and Golf was a great idea. I had a blast playing it. Played the 9 and 18 holes.
Best score so far: -21! When you understand all the mechanics, you can indeed do some pretty smart step. 5/5 :v:

@Goutye Thanks a lot! Actually strangely my best score is also -21, although from my calculations the best possible score for 18 holes is -31 I think

@sanjeev @Behenate @Potondo - I agree with you all about the camera, I wanted to have a 'free look' mode, but decided just to focus on having a fully finished game. Definitely something for a post-jam version

@Dumivid - you're right, I didn't focus too much on tweaking the bounciness and weight of the ball, maybe I just got used to it. Part of it was trying to make it still feel like a platform game as well as a golf game.

Nice game. I really enjoyed playing. My only complaint is that when you hit yourself using RMB it's a bit sensitive but maybe it's supposed to be like that? You implemented the physics aspect of the game well and it was nice to see a tutorial. Well done :)

It would have been nice to forbud pushing the ball until it was stopped !

Looks very good. You have the sense of style ;)
Problem for me - can't feel the power of ball. Despite of how long arrow, my ball ALWAYS fly with the same speed. Maybe a bug. So I can't finish 3-d level. Stupidly can't jump up...

This game was really awesome. I found it a bit easy that we were able to move though.
What I would have really loved would be that we only could hit ourselves.
I mean, I was way above the score (approximately -12 in a few holes) and then I started trying stuff, and I found it really fun to hit yourself even while still airborne. It made me think about whole new stuff like speedruns and such. Really a ton of possibilities, so great entry there, well done.

Thanks to all of you for the nice comments!

@samuel-henderson @saintheiser It sounds like you were both experiencing a bug with the movement, I'm not sure why that would be as most players have no trouble. With so many browser, mouse and O/S combinations it's tough to test and troubleshoot rare bugs :frowning2:

@biobazard I did think about that, but it was kind of stupid fun to keep hitting yourself in the air, so I left it in.

@yozamu @kamtar A lot of people have said they'd prefer not to have the side-to-side movement. The problem is that without this, it was mostly just a golf game, instead of a combination of golf and platforming. I think if I do a post compo version I will remove this extra movement.

Best golf game ever made. Congrats!!

The physics are clunky, but at the same time make the game sooo funny <3

![selfgolf.png](///raw/4c/z/14dbc.png)

This is quite probably my favourite entry so far! It definitely received the highest ratings I've given, that's for sure. The main concept is great, but in addition to that the entire game just feels incredibly complete and polished with high quality assets and lovely details. <3

You've really gotten the audio down, for one. It reminds me a lot of other golf games. The applause after finishing a level is like having a cherry on top and the music is just so cozy and relaxing. The actual golf sounds are on point as well.

Same goes for the graphics. I definitely noticed all the little details such as the flowers moving in the wind and the little bees buzzing about to help sell that outdoors golf feeling. I could almost smell the grass! Lucky I'm not allergic!

I didn't even realise there was a scoreboard until I'd finished the 18 holes. I looked at my score and thought to myself "that's pretty okay, isn't it?". I've never really played golf besides minigolf more than half a lifetime ago and I never really learned what par and so on means, so I wasn't sure. Seems it was indeed an okay score?! :D

Gorgeous game. Loved it! <3

Very effective little game. Simple and funny. Would be cool to be able to cancel your shot once you have charged too much. Also maybe a hard mode where you can't walk and the only moving option is to shoot. Great game! (Ho I made it to the leaderboard!)

Nice game. I hate golf but one good thing about this jam is that I found many fun golf combinations that I enjoyed a lot. I actually like the controls a lot and like the nice mix between golf mechanics and simple 2D platformer movement.

I just wish that the hold right click was cancellable (or that the power keeps oscillating instead of saturating at maximum value). I also had some problems with clicking out of the game bounds on the browser. I also found the physics of hitting a ceiling a bit weird since I was expecting to bounce at reflection angle but the ball just bounce downwards instead. I also wish for a way to take zoomed out look at the whole level in order to plan my shots. Sorry for complaining a lot but I really enjoyed the game a lot so I couldn't help but nitpick at every little problem I had.

The other aspects of the game are really great. The graphics is great, the subtle CRT effect is nice and the music is nice and calm. The levels are also fun and well designed. Great job.

@Jonathan-lorenz @Yetman Thanks for playing and for the feedback, glad you enjoyed it. I agree about cancelling your shot and also a mode where you can't walk, both ideas that I want to implement. I also want to add a proper zoom or camera mode so you can check out the level. Higher ceilings are also on my feature list

@Ava-skoog I think -13 is pretty good score, anything under zero is good! I can usually get around -20 or so, but only because I have played it so much during testing. I think the technically perfect achievable score is -32, but I have never managed it. So glad you liked the music and thought it was relaxing, that was the vibe I was going for. Anyway thank you so much for the nice comments, I really appreciate it!
