Sacrifarm by martincohen

[raw]
made by martincohen for LD 43 (JAM)

Survival is ruthless and unyielding.

You play as a farmer who has to sacrifice people with his holy shotgun to please the gods for rain.

  • Sacrifice enough of people (a lot, ehm) to make the rain gods happy.
  • Seeds only grow when it rains.
  • Crops feed people, but die soon if not harvested.
  • People need to be fed, otherwise they starve to puff (death).

Be ruthless. Be unyielding. Survive as many seasons as possible.

Best played with WASD and mouse, but arrows and space might work too.

Originally made as a Compo entry, but I didn't get to finish it on time (started late with having only 24h to get it done). All fonts, code, art, sound and music is done by me. No third-party assets or asset generators used. Game is done entirely in C on my own, but freshly made engine. Windows only for now. More platforms are on the way.

Not really much to it, but shooting and moving feels really good and the 2d art is really nice too.

I liked it a lot! I'm not sure I understood exactly the lose conditions - well, I know why I lost once (I shot all my people to death, woops), but I'm not sure how I could anger the gods, or what exactly causes the population to grow/shrink (afaict, shooting 1 person = 1 seed = 1 plant = 1 person eventually?). I'm probably missing something. Anyway, felt very Nuclear Throney in the gameplay, which is high praise :)

@fasterthanlime Yeah, the Gods do have their own will. The rain is where it's at, you need to sacrifice enough people to please the rain gods, so the crops grow. Fed people multiply, but nothing is made to last.

Awesome work! Gameplay is smooth and very satisfying. Love getting multiple hits with one shot and then running through the crops to respawn the population! Also like how the pace of the game is quick; it keeps moving. Amazing that you did all this on your own freshly made engine as well. Great stuff!

It was super fun but I had no clue what I was doing for a good 3 minutes. Even after reading all the descriptions it's a bit confusing, but I got the hang of it after a while. It's a satisfying and easy game. It really fit the theme well!

Amazing game. It was just full of polish and it feels really nice to run and gun. Didn't get what to do at the start but then got it. Btw I have a 2ms macro on my mouse and its just super OP like that. I just stood at the middle of the crops and held macro and rotated. It was like a laser beam. Always, always mind macros

@ytaha Hehe, will limit that in the update! Thanks for heads up.

I love the idea and it looks and plays great. The spritework is excellent and the music makes it even more fun to blast people away. I would have liked some variation (maybe another type of person that would anger the gods?). Overall, awesome job.

@ryan-brenner I was thinking about killing people during the rain would anger the gods (as that's then technically a murder), but I would have to think about it. Also thanks for the feedback, good sire. Loved your game <3

Really simple, really straight-forward, really fun. I loved the art, the music, and the gameplay loop for the time I played it. I found it a little too easy, and would have loved to see a bit more of a challenge but overall I had a great time with this game, ended up playing it far longer than I had expected to when I first started. Great job!

Awesome idea and animations. Artwork is great, and sounds/music is fun. Only suggestion I can think of is reducing the screen shake a bit because after multiple runthroughs I found my head hurting a little. Very fun!

That was awesome, really fun to play. The graphics look really amazing, seems like the type of game I'd jam to while time-wasting

This game feels like a sandbox game. It feels kind of endless because of the slowly diminishing cycle of creating crops to feed people. The music adds a chill but frentic mood to the game. Cool game with good game-feel.

Absolutely love it! It's extremely polished, one of the most polished ones I've seen yet. There could've been a better explanation for what exactly to do in the game but it was fun figuring it out. I think you should really invest some time into making it available on the web or for mac though. Your game deserves to have a larger audience!

No idea what was going on, but super fun regardless. Played this one for way longer than I expected to, made it five seasons in. Simple art style, lots of juice, and just plain fun to play. Great work!

Game gives a really good feedback on players actions, and with nice graphics and music it makes it a really good entry. Only complaint is that auto-shooting so i can hold mouse button instead of smashing it would be better.

Very cool! Like others, I had a little trouble figuring out what I was doing, and what the numbers meant, and why I transitioned to different seasons. The gameplay was very smooth, the pixel art and effects top-notch, and the soundtrack rockin'. Very impressive.

First of all, awesome job for keeping game's size around 3mb's, after downloading ton of over 100mb's Unity/Unreal Engine games it felt refreshing :)
Game itself - it's really freaking good :) Firing shotgun felt awesome, just as picking up the grains. I liked the little screenshake too. But little more info about how much people I really have to sacrifice would be nice.

@kszaku Haha! Oh yeah, hate that too! It's just people being lazy really. Of that file size, the main track is 3.8MB (because of a bug in my audio engine I had to use 32-bit float format, but I'm on a path of fixing it). Thanks for the words of praise and also the feedback. I'll do my best to update the game, and think about that on my next jam! <3

Visuals and audio are great! Also the concept of the game, sacrifice, crops and population. Very well thought! Cool entry!

This game is a lot of fun! Hope you'll add more to it like maybe an update weapon or resources screen in between waves or something to add a bit more versatility and variety but other than that , great on the music department and great graphics.

The visuals and audio are great. The game feel is on point. I didn't understander exactly the objective of the game, I was basically walking around kill stuf ( what was really fun ) but I didn't get how exactly am I supposed to win or lose. The game starts to become a little repetitive after each season. But overall I had a lot of fun playing the game. Good Job ;).

Interesting idea. I included it in my compilation video series of games from the Ludum Dare, if you’d like to take a look :) https://youtu.be/MmJYQ_UA09A
