Arctic Arctic Adventure by lonewookie

[raw]
made by lonewookie for LD 42 (COMPO)

You play as Pengy the Penguin. You live on a patch of ice in the middle of the ocean. There are lots of hungry Walruses around, luckily, you have plenty of curry! Feed the walruses and they will leave you alone! Do it quick before they eat all of your ice! Don't get caught on a collapsing piece of ice!

  • USE ARROW KEYS TO MOVE AROUND
  • PRESS Z TO THROW CURRY
  • FEED THE WALRUSES BEFORE THEY EAT ALL OF THE ICE AND YOU RUN OUT OF SPACE
  • IF YOU FALL IN THE ICE, YOU DIE. YOU HAVE 3 LIVES
  • WHAT LEVEL CAN YOU GET TO? This game was made for THREE DIFFERENT GAME JAMS!

This game was created in less than 48 hours for LUDUM DARE 42. The theme was "Running out of Space". The walruses will eat the ice if you don't feed them, thus you run out of space on the ice!

It was also created for LOWREZJAM 2018. It was made with a resolution of 64x64 pixels!

It was also created for A GAME BY ITS COVER 2018, a jam using the Famicase Exhibition as inspiration! I made my game based on this cover by Shiratama. The optional theme was CHILL, which my game fit perfectly with.

GRIPES: I am overall pretty happy with this game. I think it could use more balance, I'm not really sure if it's too easy or too hard. I was going to add a mechanic to add ice back to the playing field, but ran out of time. I also added music and sound to this game, which I usually neglect, I'm not really happy with the sound, and I would like to learn how to make better music/sound in the next jam. Lastly, my code is a mess, please don't look at it. :)

I hope you enjoy the game!

This game had me playing for quite a long while! It does have some issues with the collision: the character doesn't have any way of sliding against edges, so it's hard to access curry when it's in a nook. And when I finally died, I lost all three lives instantly.

Besides those issues, I would suggest adding some more detail to projectiles, like an arc on the curry so that tossing it is not quite as simple. Also, give the movement patterns of the walruses some more predictable elements so that I can form a plan. The game uses a lot of RNG right now in places where it could have some kind of chaotic pattern, something that varies but follows a predictable logic.

Really neat! And, gosh, great effort hitting three jams at once. My one suggestion would be adding an sfx and/or animation when a walrus gets fed - you can tell if your aim/timing was ok as soon as the walruses surface again, but it's the kind of thing that'd be good to get instant feedback on. Nice work!
