Adventure of the Lone Adventurer by prv

[raw]
made by prv for LD 41 (COMPO)

A western survival card game! Press enter to shoot all the bandits and survive for so long you can. Collect cards and click them to activate the bonuses for them.

The game includes home-made graphics and western-guitar songs played by me.

Also added the possbility to turn of music and/or sounds in the settings menu.

This was my first attempt on LD and I possibly had the 2 most stressful hours of my life the last two hours before deadline, and still so many thing I would like to add. Hope you enjoy it :)

you mean inside the source folder or in itch.io, or on the direct download link??

itch definitely missing the link, I did the direct download and java -jar .Completed up to 4 waves, it is hard to shoot with spacebar, would be nice to shoot with the mouse click. Music was pretty good.

Yeah, you are probably right about that! Do not know about itch, the link works when I click it xD

Text doesn't word wrap in the Jar Direct Download for me, so all the text overflows and is unreadable. Since you aim with the cursor, it would might feel better to click for shooting. Fun game overall, the theme is amusing!

Nice game, the music is good to get you into the mood. I took me a while to see the cards in the level, maybe some kind of visual aid or soundfx would help to notice them. Solid overall.

The download worked fine for me. It was a bit confusing figuring out the controls since I was expecting a card game (anyone who happens to read this, it's WSAD to move, space shoot, point to aim). I absolutely loved the music and sound effect, and the graphics work really well. It was a lot of fun, I ended up making it to $1340 and wave 9 :)

@JanGamesDev thanks for the feedback! I agree, that they are first of all abit to small and that they should be easier to spot.

@drprettypatty Time ran away from me to explain how to play and all the mechanics. If you had seen the sourcecode, you would actually find a halffinished help/how to play page xD. Thanks for the feedback!

Great mood thanks to the combination of graphics and awesome music!

The gameplay is kind of awkward unfortunately. It's kinda hard to see the enemy bullets, and I'm not really clear on how I got cards.

Definitely got into it after a while though (again, great music)!

I would to start of by saying thank you for all the feed back as this help me improve my game programming. Thank to every single one of you! Even though I do not comment on all gameplay releated feedback, I read all of it and I will have all of these issues in mind until next time. I have done some "bug-hunting" to try to find out some of the bugs, if you are interessted you can read these under here.

@Apples_mmmmmmmm Thanks for the "bug report" on the text. It seems like the font I used did not correctly compile it self to the jar file. Therefore if it is not installed on your computer it will use another one instead. This is the reason why it overflows as the font is wider than the one originaly used. This is something I will keep in mind until next time. Thanks again!

@theviraldragon Thanks for the feedback. I find this bug to be facinating and would actually try find out why, but as I do not have a mac I can't really do testing on it. But thanks for the feedback anyway!

Like the dialogue, it adds intensity to that inevitable movement of dying. My favorite card was double speed lol

* hitboxes seem way too big; you usually want an hitbox a bit smaller than your objects (the player would forgive not taking hits too easily)
* The text needs space to breathe. Avoid them to be sticked together (each lines should have a blank space between them)
* Not sure you should make a mac port if you are unable to test the game in it
* There are cactuses, but they don't serve as obstacles. A shame, I think it wouldn't have been bad!
* It has already been stated, but since you aim with the mouse, it's strange that you shoot with space. Usually, you want "space" to be assigned to an action that is not frequent (like jumping in an fps). since you aim with the mouse, shoot with the mouse as well.
* Items need to be more visible. I didn't notice them at first.

Yee haww, cool western shmup! *spits in bucket*
Lovely music, nice to read you made that yourself.
The gameplay itself is quite hectic, with dem zorros in persuit. Would have like to see a little more diverse behaviours from the enemies, perhaps stunned slightly when hit, or somesuch.
Powerups were a cool combo add, though they seemed not to occur often enough to make a big splash.

Also for some reason the text exceeded the window boundaries - perhaps font missing?

@Kwisarts Thank you so much for the feedback! I'll make sure to keep these things in mind until next time. And about the mac: I believed that java worked anywhere, so I am still a but confused about that part. For the font: Yes I had a custom western font, but this did not end up in the jar, which I only found out later. But again thank you so much for all of the constructive feedback!

@Joror Yes, the font is missing. Found out about it a bit later. Thanks for the feedback! Will keep all of this in-mind until next time!
