Captain's Dilemma by Lizouille

[raw]
made by Lizouille for LD 43 (JAM)

You're a spaceship captain who has to choose the best itinerary to go home...but at what cost?

This old-school shoot'em up is my first solo game. The idea was to sacrifice assets (sounds, sprites, UI...) while shooting at ennemies, making the game more and more difficult. I used sprites made by Master484 (they are in the public domain).

Controls : Arrow keys to move, Spacebar to shoot

Note: shooting consumes energy.

The game should be played in fullscreen (otherwise you won't see everything).

Known bugs : some explosions won't disappear.

I used Unity, Visual Studio, Photoshop CC 2018 and Audacity.

Ok, this is really cool. The design/UI/UX really makes you feel you're piloting the ship. The "start screen" looks very nice. My only complaint is the lack of ammunition, I always run out quickly.

I really like the idea and it was really fun, I didn't quite understand what it had to do with the theme.

Your game is so fun! Well balanced even if I ended up having no more fuel and just avoiding enemies (which was tricky!) more often than I would have liked :D Good job on this game.

Gave me vibes of the game Seedship with the decisions. Really enjoyed it, great work!

Some good ideas. The final choice at the end of the level is one of them. Thank you

Yeah that fits the theme perfectly. A bit annoying that I kept flying off the screen though.

Pretty nice! Very challenging but made me want to keep going. Fits the theme with choosing between energy and life.

Very intuitive game. I liked the tutorial, simple but effective! The penalties add a lot of fun in the gameplay. Good job!

Fun to play, however the sprites disapeared at some point, I like the dilema of choosing life or fuel, choosing the story based on which wormhole to get into is really fun, I'd really love to see this changing the look of the map. Great job ! :)

Good job! Had a lot of fun playing, had to play another time to understand the other assets I missed in the first run XD. Great idea!

Game was hard which is always welcome on this kind of game. Gameplay was fun, and getting to choose only one resource matched the theme, well done!

FINALLY! An original take on the binary choice game. I loved how you incorporated it into the existing mechanics of the genre instead of slapping another system on there.

I love the fact that you are getting a choice between randomized penalties, adding a really good rogue-like feeling to this game. I felt like there was a lot of elements to account for, thus making it quite hard sometimes to understand what is going on - of course the penalties are not helping ahah ! I was a bit frustrated by the ship control and hitbox, since I had trouble evaluating where my ship would end when I press buttons. Anyway, great game, congrats !

I was having a lot of fun. The simple starting menu screen was great. The theme was well used. Well, a classic space shooter otherwise but it made the new concepts made up for it.

this game is super cool. I love the idea of losing the Ui everytime I'm making a decision. The game is really nice. It's fun to play. Also the tutorial at the begining is really nicely done. quickly understandable and intuitive.

I really enjoyed that you had to make decisions by flying into the choices. The lifes and recharge items flew by so fast-- I think im just bad at these kind of games. But I had fun. Great job!

I kept running out of ammo pretty quick, but besides that, the actual gameplay felt fine.

It's a great game! The concept is incredibly effective! The tutorial of the beginning is very smart!
However I find the game a little bit difficult, but maybe it's because I'm not very good!

Great Job ! Bravo!

Awesome game! I had a lot of fun playing it, one of my favorites so far! I liked that as the game advanced it got progressively harder but never started feeling unfair. The missing sprites also were a nice touch.
