Torontifornia! by NDHR Productions

About Me :raising_hand:

This is my second Ludum Dare and my first time making a 2D game. I decided on a 3D one for LD42 which took up a lot of time, so I was excited to start this journey for LD43! Everything is from scratch, but the base art was made by a friend watching the stream (more than just programmer art <3). Sounds were all from my own very mouth, programming was unique (with a few statements here and there found on StackOverflow :P), and I ended with lots of time to spare! Enough about me though, let's get on with the game!

Torontifornia :maple_leaf:

Welcome to Torontifornia! You are the last remaining general of the USofC (United States of Canada) and you've been kicked out of your capital city, Torontifornia, by rebels. Fight! Win! But if you need better troops, you might have to sacrifice some of your own. Oh, and also, watch that morality bar! Anyway, that's all in the instructions in the game. Here are some screenshots!

Had fun playing through it! I got to around wave 8 (not sure about the number - but just after I got the last type of soldier). At that point I lost all my morale and lost the game. I wasn't entirely sure what a good strategy is - my soldiers keep dying so quickly from enemy fire, why would I want to sacrifice my own soldiers? I tried playing through it again a few times trying a few different strategies but didn't find one that worked. Is there a win state to the game?

I thought the game was quite good and I enjoyed my time though also quite unbalanced. This was because it was almost always better to use the cheep soldiers if the numbers on the tooltip were correct. Also because the cap was so low it was almost always better to just wait for the soldiers to die instead of killing the. Finaly, where was the ICE CREAM ;).

While the game needs a bit more polish, still good job!

Game is to sorry (boring), but concept is ok. You should give it a little twist,, a challenge.

Idea and concept is ok but game needs some balance. I played through 8th wave but did not sacrifice any of my man because they died themselves.

This looks pretty nice! Though I would prefer if you increased the capacity size every few waves it would feel more practical to get the stronger units that take up more space. Other than that, good entry!

Thank you everyone for the feedback! I really appreciate all of it. The obvious improvements are to balance it (I strongly agree), to add capacity every few waves, and to make sure sacrificing them is actually necessary. I am planning on going home tonight and hopefully adding all of that into a version 2.0!

Really cool game you made. The concept is really funny.

I would suggest adding cooldown timers and a way to tell if you can deploy the troop or not. I did not uderstand when could I or when I couldn't.

But overall. Awesome job!!!

I had fun playing! Almost made it to wave 8 but I ran out of morale! I was a little confused at first about the rules, I didn't quite realize there was a cooldown on adding troops for a sec, but once I learned that it made the game smoother. I didn't really know how to boost morale either though, I got prompted for the ice cream once but never again that I noticed. I really want to go into the cellar though. I thought this was a well made game and I loved that it had progressively difficult levels. I didn't think that at any point it was too hard too fast.
Thanks for making it!

v1.1 was just released! I fixed a couple of issues, balanced a couple of things, and added some of the suggestions. A graphics update (new animations, enemy types) will be coming later this month!

I finished the game! It didn't really feel like I had to make any sacrifices though. That is (even though I played v1.1), it still never felt advantageous to me to kill my own soldiers; they already died of their own accord ;). Anyway, thanks for the nice game and icecream. Oh, by the way, nice music! Well done :)

@papaver Yep, it's something I've been thinking about. I'm planning on doing a graphics update for Christmas, and I really want to add in some new feature that makes sacrifice necessary...not exactly sure what yet thou. Thanks for playing, though, and I'm glad you liked the :ice_cream:
