Drowning in the Rain by OddballDave

Drowning in the Rain is an autobiographical vignette with mild puzzle elements. It covers a very important and difficult period of my life.

Description
I took a slightly lateral approach to the theme this time. If we take 'Your life is currency' as a statement directed at the reader it reads 'My life is currency' or put another way 'My life has value', 'My life is meaningful'. With this in mind I created a small abstract narrative experience about a five year period of my life that began with the death of my father.

Instructions
wasd+mouse to move, c to crouch/stand, and LMB to interact. There are clues in the narration for what to do next. Headphones are highly recommended.

Tools - Unity
- Clip Studio Paint
- Audacity
- Notes(OS X)
- Wacom Bamboo
- MacBook Pro
- A cheap PS4 headset microphone

Walkthrough
If you get stuck, but would still like to see the whole game here is a little walkthrough.

Shave !>Take the scythe from the statue and cut all the tall grass

Growing

Feed

Listen !>Stand near the scarecrow until he finishes talking

The PC version is crashing after some time :( I've test with different resolutions, but still a crash when the first sound file loads. If I have my back against the main area and walks backwards, it plays the first sound but crashes when loading the second

Update: The webgl version is working and I managed to finish the game!

Thanks for the info @superchihuahua I'll look into it. In the mean time I've uploaded a webGL version which might give better results. :8ball:

That was a beautiful game, thanks for sharing. The simple (but somewhat genius) art style combined with the sounds was very effective here, great storytelling.

Thank you for sharing your story. Every elements really clicked together and I was caught up in the narration from start to end. Even the moment where I lost myself in the fog was on point because, when i was back, a little light was born in the world.

It really catches the eye.

Still need to admit I did not finished and gave up. I've been playing WebGL, experienced poor performance and having frustration from vertical mouse opposite to what I am used to, when I've stuck at one moment I've just lost patience.

Anyway I immediately got attracted and enjoyed the style and atmosphere. Autobiographical element makes it more than just a game.

(Linux version crashes when playing first sound same as the Win one reported before)

It's an experience. A work of art.
The atmosphere, the visuals, the story, the mood, everything is amazing.
Edit: I easily get lost in the fog tho.

Very well done! Very much like the style and how you let us take part in your history.

I am currently stuck with a ring ( i suppose) in my hands. Yet have to find the one to give it to ( i only see a graveyard and a scarecrow.

@delpes If in doubt point the crosshair at everything until something flashes. If you're still a bit stuck

!>plant the ring in the patch of earth on the opposite side to the statue.

wow, thank you for sharing this - the art and audio go really well with the storytelling, and they did a great job of guiding me through the whole story; even when I got lost in the fog, it only added to tone of the whole game. this is really well-done!

The mood and atmosphere are nicely crafted. This was a very deep expirience and story.

Thanks for letting me have this experience. It's a very beautifully made little game. I don't think I got to the very end but spoiler (start row with `!>`):

!> I had something like a book in my hand but couldn't find anything to interact it with. It also seemed like it was always highlighting itself.

First time I played I got stuck on the piece you helped with above. I think I tried to highlight the thing the first time but I must have missed the cursor. So it might be that the cursor could do with some clearer or adaptive outline to help guide the player.

Another possible improvement:

!> First when cutting the grass I happened to be facing the back of the first couple of graves. Perhaps the graves could orient themselves to face towards where the player is cutting them up from.

The rain was very beautiful. That's what pulled me in. I stayed for the whole experience.

@local-minimum I never knew the site had actual spoiler tags. Thanks for that info. I know the 'puzzles' are a bit obtuse so thanks for persevering. You were right near the end. If you'd like to finish

!>**Carry** the pixel, yes it's a pixel, you got from the egg out into the fog away from all those events of the past, and into, hopefully, a bright and wonderful future.

Well damn.. Quite the journey. I did make it to the end but there were a couple times I got stuck for a while which was a bit frustrating because I really wanted to finish it. I think a bit more direction would be good and better for the pacing.

The most polished one I've played this LD. Powerful stuff. If anything to critique, I feel that for one, the puzzles weren't very intuitive, the character movement was a bit slow, and the mouse was redonkolously sensitive (had to manually turn my DPI as far down as it goes and still had light speed mouse movement). Great, great work!

Honestly I think I'm OK with the relative obtuseness of the puzzles. I don't think they're *really* too fargone, and it works excellently thematically.

It's sort of perverted to critique this as a game, I think you made exactly what you had meant to make and it comes across. Thanks for sharing.
