:whitecheckmark: New Version 1.0.1

  • Decreased movement-speed of player & increased jump-power of player to allow dodging of snowballs
  • Increased fire-rate of player
  • Added additional platforms to jump on in case of attacks

You are a young boy (Sam). You lived a happy live in the sunny kingdom. One day a evil wizard appeared that transformed your kingdom into an icy landscape. Now you have been chosen by the omniscient oracle to drive the evil wizard out of sunny kingdom. To free it from its icy occupator and to let the sun shine again. To fight the evil wizard you have to climb to the top of the dusty mountain and challenge him for a fight. But be aware the higher you get the less you will be able to see. And if you fall ... just don't fall.

Controls:

Control Sam with A-D-keys or the left- and right-arrow keys. To be able to climb the mountain you sometimes have to use Sams super power: Jump 2 Times in a row.

Use the space-bar-key to jump (up to 2 times in a row) and the F-key to throw fireballs.

The servants of the evil wizard are:

The evil Snowman:

snowman.png He throws icy snowballs at you that will hurt you.

The gruesome Snowghost:

snow_ghost.png He is not bound to a body, which makes him extremely dangerous. If you come too close to him he will hunt you down and suck the life out of you.

In the first level you have to climb to the top and find a golden key that will teleport you to the mountain of the evil wizard. There you will challenge him and his servants to fight you. He looks like an ordinary oversized snowman … but be aware!

--

The higher you get the smaller your field of view becomes: smaller_view.png

Tools used:

  • Unity, Inkscape, Audacity for Sound editing (Sounds recorded by me).
  • Everything was done on a Macbook Air with a Touchpad.
  • Snow sounds were recorded with an Iphone6S Plus.
  • Wind sounds were recorded with the Internal Macbook Microphone.

This is my first GameJam and my first Ludum Dare.

  • I definitely plan too continue working on Sam Snow.

  • Let me know what do you think about the mechanics and the art style.

  • Thank you for playing Sam Snow :)

Omg the wind sound is just so hilarious :D I liked the graphics, cool to be done by just 1 person in this short time :) Well made!

Really cool, winter like atmosphere :) ! But I'm afraid I don't really see how it fits into the theme of the more you have the worst it gets...

Thanks for the feedback :) - @noa-calice: The higher (more) you get when climbing up the smaller your field of view becomes. So more means more height.

I couldn't get the double jumping to work normally, but it works if you spam the space bar. Nice concept.

The movement is for me way too fast, I also just couldn't jump on the second ledge and above...

@11tomi12 Did you try to double jump ? I just updated the speed - you can try it now :)

Very nice graphics. I liked the snowmen. The main character had a lot of personality.

The limited view range is a cool concept and makes sense in reality (i.e. not a shoehorned mechanic).

Nice graphics and atmosphere, also love the wind sound! I often found it difficult to know where to jump next however, and after gaining a little bit of height, it seemed near impossible to avoid the big icy things.

Nice! I liked the atmosphere. Not sure if a bug but you can jump fairly often, maybe more then intended? Also the howling sounds are nice but maybe a tad too loud?

@conorod - Thanks for the feedback :) - You mean the field of view got to small? Do you think increasing it would solve the problem of of better avoiding the ice ghosts?
🎤 Matthias Schedel

@pinneh: The reason why it is seems possible to jump more then 2 times is that your jump count resets everytime you collide with a block (no matter the direction). I kept it in the game because sometimes it helps you to prevent falling when you miss a jump slightly, especially when your field of view decreases. Was it a big drawback in terms of game experience?

Nice job completing your first LD! I like the graphics of Sam and the Snowman, but felt like the rest of the atmosphere of the game (harsh wind sounds, etc.) didn't match up with this pleasant happy art.

I would have loved to hear a neat wintery music track with this- I think it really would take this to the next level!

Thanks so much for sharing this game!

There seems to be some weird visual glitch happening whenever I get hit by the snow man? Really blocks out everything thats going on.

Graphics were nice, but I think the controls could do with some tweaking. The jump especially was very floaty.

@jons-games The glitch only occurs in the web version, I'm currently working on it. And I will adjust the jumping mechanics. Thanks your your feedback :)

Congrats on finishing your first Jam. It's an achievement on its own to publish a game before the deadline!

The game is pretty hard. The jump could be done better, maybe because its lack its own animation.

It seems like there's a bug or something on my machine, I cannot see the snow ghost, only a bunch of spiky bluish blob.

It would help a lot to have basic control guideline in game as well, I tends to play game before reading the post (avoid spoilers) and didn't know you can shoot with F until I came back and read the description. Afterward the game make a lot more sense.

The art style is quite cute! The main character is very nicely drawn. I feel the walking animation could do with some more up-and-down motion as he steps forward. Since you're wanting to continue work on the game, I'd suggest a start-jump animation and a landing animation as well, to make movement fun and feel right. I think the current jumps feel a little too floaty.

I was playing the web version so I also got the weird cyan shape glitch. Like @avavt I had to read the instruction on the webpage to learn how to play, which is a shame. Right now the fireball combat feels a little stale. Also, how can he control fireballs? He's just a young boy. I crave lore! :D

Nice work!

@avat thanks for the feedback :) - I added some basic instructions at the start & I also fixed the problem with the spiky bluish blobs :))
@flaterectomy Jump and Land animations are on top of my To-Do List right now. As mentioned above the bug with the weird cyan shape is fixed now :)

The art is really cute, I loved the effect you used to kinda of make the things dissapear because of the snow storm, really cool game, although it is very simple, the sounds you could have used a wind sfx that was not as loud as the one you used, but overal you did an amazing job, congrats !
