It's Not Lupus! by Deozaan

[raw]
made by Deozaan for LD 41 (JAM)

Trivia/Educational + Arcade Game

You are a medical student completing your residency. You must first diagnose your patients and then be shrunk down to microscopic size to go into into your patients to destroy what is ailing them.

How to play

The trivia section of the game requires a mouse or touch input.
The arcade section of the game can be played with a keyboard or gamepad:

Move: A and D or Arrow Keys
Shoot: Spacebar

Destroy the large "virus" in the center to win the arcade mode.

Known Issues

  1. The arcade mode isn't very well balanced. This makes it either too hard or too easy.

Very fun game and has huge potential if development continues after the LD!

The arcade parts are visually really cool. I wish they had more variety to them, since it seems like you can always win by just firing constantly and not moving. There's definitely a lot of potential here.

This is a strong entry! Good graphics, nice variety in the quiz section and challenge in the arcade bit. Well-presented and in keeping with the theme. Overall I enjoyed it!

Congrats for your entry! Nice polish on this game, makes it easy to get into :) I agree with the comments above, suggesting more variety in the shooting phases, but still very cool!

Whoa the graphics are stunning. I like the idea, even if it is not really a combination of the genre, more of a juxtaposition. The shooting phase could be a little more diverse. Also I get stuck to the "mission failed" screen (don't know if it is intended, but it could be nice to add a retry button or something).
The audio is cool as well, it sets the mood perfectly.

Really enjoyed the little touches that you did (especially the eye brow moving up and down haha). I also agree with what everyone else has said. Good job! :D

Nice game, but you need to unify controls

I just cured diarrhea and tinnitus with a spaceship - GOTY. Seriously though, cool concept that you realized well. The shooty bits are a tad bit repetitive, and the questions started repeating after the first four or so which means that there's probably not that many of them (or it was just my luck) but the game looks cool, plays well and I learned something from it. Good job!

It's a really fun game. The graphics are awesome. Not sure about the gameplay though. I the stage one is improbable. Stage 2 impossible. and stage 3 would take 10 ships to shoot lol

Apparently I can win by just shooting in the same spot. I feel with more polish this could turn into an interesting concept though.

Wow, really inventive! This has to be one of the best mash-up games I've played in the Jam. Both the quiz and shooting elements felt fun to play and the graphics and music/sound were top notch. Great job!

Faster transitions would be appreciated. Also, I'm sad you didn't include "Humor" as a rateable category. Dr Condo's waggle-brows would have gotten you 5-stars, easy :)

Thanks @ everyone so far!

Sorry the "shooty bits" are boring/easy/repetitive. We had plans for upgrades, different kinds of ammo, and attempts to add more balance/challenge but had to scrap a lot to finish on time. :slight_frown:

@Marcenat No, you are not supposed to get stuck on Mission Failed. It should take you back to the trivia section when you fail.

@kilosaurus Do you have any suggestions on how the controls could have been better?

@Dancinoman I think most people find the shooting parts too easy. Once you know the secret, you will think so, too!

@seurimas Oh no! :fearful: There were two categories that were mistakenly disabled during the many times the site went down when I was trying to submit the entry. Humor is enabled now. Please re-cast your vote if you get a chance. :grinning:

Before reading your page, I thought the goal was to try to wipe out the whole virus or at least just try to keep it from hitting the edge. That was insanely difficult and I never really got close. After see that you only need to kill the source, it became a lot more manageable. Great art/concept!

Wow !! Perfect application of the them ! Graphics are awesome, music and sound is great ! A solid entry, the game is very finished. The virus attack part is quite difficult hehe, I waited too much before starting to fight the threat, the way the virus propagates almost looked like fractals. But yeah I lost my patient because of that :P Again, great game and awesome work! :)

Good concept, but the arcade section is a bit too simple. It's too easy to just stay in one spot and hold fire.

A really solid entry with a great presentation! I love the little details like the certificates, the animation, the intro and the spaceships wings!
I am pretty sure that xerostomia was the correct answer when the game told me it's lupus, though. Maybe I just misread the question.

Combination of two simple elements really kept me playing for a while. I probably went up about 10 threat level 1 noses... but couldn't win any of them. Maybe I missed a strategy that was spelled out somewhere. I happened to know almost all the answers to the trivia sections, so I got to feel smart with my EMT-dropout knowledge! Nice job on the game!

@LemonBalmGames There are about 20 questions but the game chooses them entirely randomly so there's a chance you'll get repeats pretty early on.

@Beebo-Studios You're right! The Xerostomia question is marked as having Lupus be the correct answer. It's a classic off-by-one bug due to numbers starting at 0. That's an embarrassing bug for a game called It's Not Lupus!

@dijaguy Check the description (or other comments) for instructions on how to easily win the arcade mode. But once you know the "secret" you'll find it takes the fun from it. :slight_frown:

I like the acarde mode, but it seems that, at least in the html 5 version you get a "mission complete", as soon as the core is defeated, but you still have to defeat all the remaining enemies. Also it's seems to be quite easy in all different levels, if you focus on the core mot of the time.

It would be great if you could skip the dialog in the diagnostic screen, with a button or with space bar, so that increasing difficulty gets easier.

Overall it was fun and I enjoyed playing it.

Great job! I like the combination of an active-pasive game style, also players can understand how to play without any tedious explanation. I love the characters appearance and the nose moment:) The virus game was a bit hard for me because the speed of ship rotation is a bit high, so i couldn't shot in the correct place when its branches where spreading. Overall, I really like the game and i spent a good time playing it!

To all of you who have tested our game, thank you! I am Durgan, one third of our team. Like all of you I've been enjoying these games so it took me a little bit to get my time lapse video together. This was my first Ludum Dare and I had a blast!. I hope you enjoy watching as much as I had making it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iGDAAR29Jok

Very polished and solid game. Graphics and music were great, and the gameplay of battling the virus was really satisfying! You got these genres to mix well, and increasing the threat level is a good consequence for getting a misdiagnosis.
My only negative feedback would be to take some of the low-end out of the audio that plays while text is being displayed. Having that sound play with every letter makes it a tiny bit machine-gunish.
Great job!

Nice graphics and it the orbital shooting inward mechanic felt rewarding, I found it difficult to contain the outbreak though (and that's when still doing a correct diagnose). My patience for reading is notoriously bad, however, so I found it difficult to maintain interest. That's probably nothing wrong with the game, just my own attention span =) Great job!

Love the graphics and the sound design, and the video you posted about how they were made. The orbital shooting needs a little balancing: failed every time when actually moving around trying to contain it, but won every time when I just sat there and shot until. Definitely up there for best music.

Oh, and loved the eyebrow waggling!

Very funny entry!
I salute your work on storytelling, the diversity of dialogues and disease cases. They are all very fun. (the little jokes hidden in the scenery too)
the gameplay of the shoot party is original but may require a better balance. It is possible to finish the game not moving and shooting continuously.

However very good work !

@pietro-ferrantelli Thank you. We enjoyed working on this game and look forward to polishing it up. We are aware of the balance issue and lack of variety in the arcade portion of the game and both of these are top priority on our to do list. Thanks for your feedback!

Hi all, we just released a bugfix edition that fixes various typos and other errors, but doesn't otherwise change gameplay in any way, so it remains true to the original LD41 experience.

Hey I actually played your game for a while! I kept losing b/c I was trying to manage the virus and not let it spread to the edge, but then I realized you had to kill the center in order win. Once I figured that out it seemed pretty easy as I could just shoot in the same spot and pretty much win every time. This game could you use some polish and some variability to the different types of viruses. All in all it was an enjoyable web game! I liked the doctor's character and the set up for answering questions.

Impressive to see both the pick the correct answer minigame and the small plane minigame. It complemented each other that the whole game wasn't just the quiz. It fitted nicely with the story of the game. When playing the plane minigame i didn't quite catch that space was the shoot key. Maybe a promt or similar could make the player aware of that.
