Runner Out Of Power by Mathiouza

[raw]
made by Mathiouza for LD 39 (COMPO)

Here is my submission for the Ludum Dare 39 !! This is a runner where you have to repower some thnigs after a blackout. Have fun and thank you for playing ! : )

(The levels 4 and 5 are actually really hard, good luck x) All the musics I made are accessible in the "musics" folder, there is a music for each level, so if you are stuck, you can listen them ; Source code downloadable on GameJolt page).

The idea is novel and it was properly executed. Loved the pixel art. :)

The sound effects and the track blended well with the game.
The game is challenging but not very hard, and I loved it! :D

Good luck and congratulations.
Again, Really amazing job! 5* game!

Nice cutscenes and polish, but I found the gameplay very simplistic and unoriginal. I feel like the game could've used some kind of unique gimmick.

It worked for me. I did have to install Java first though.

The game is fairly basic but I'm impressed at the work you've put into the presentation! An introductory cinematic, animated menus, and the slow down during the tutorial bits are nice touches.

I'm really bad at anything that requires reactions though so I can't even manage to beat level 2.

Cool idea. It was a little frustrating to have to watch the fade out screen when I died, and then have to choose my level again. I have no reason to choose one other than the level I was just playing, so it seemed pointless. But it is fun to play, so good job :)

I like this game a lot! The only thing I found quite annoying is that you had to click with the mouse every time you wanted to retry (or I missed something)

This was a cool game. I liked the music and art style. There are few things that I would try to improve. I think that this game needs some kind of tutorial because it took me a while to realize that you need to press the arrows (thought that there were only slow motion). Also text has some bugs but that's not a biggie. Also it would have been nice to have restart without clicking the level again. Overall this was a cool game and I enjoyed playing it.

I like the concept. The completion screens for each level and the Title/level selection design were great.
The fourth level was brutal. I never could beat it.

I agree with @peculiarcarrot and @larx about the menu stuff. I'd suggest keeping one control scheme throughout (arrows and spacebar for menu navigation instead of mouse)

would be even better if the music synced, rythm game :P
and yeah, you should make it restart on death or something

Really nice game here!

- The opening cutscene was really good for a game made in such a low amount of time
- Matrix mode during the tutorial is fun
- Simple gameplay, but solid!
- Amazing music! What is that, five themes?
- Very challenging!

After 272 tries (192 of it being the last level) I finally finished the game ! Even if it was really hard, and the gameplay wasn't very original, I loved the attention given to the animations and the small details. The graphics and the music were nice too. It's a simple but effective use of the theme.
Nice job !

Nice simple idea executed pretty well! The music is enjoyable. The first few levels weren't too bad, once I memorized the sequence. I gave up on the brown level after 30 tries lol.

I would have loved to play the game but I don't have Java installed and definitely don't want to. Maybe you could choose a technology that is easier to deploy on Windows for your next game?

Very fun game, it does get very difficult in the the last couple of levels. Might be nice to reduce the time between losing and being able to try a level again. Good entry.

Good game! Very engaging with the graphics and the audio. Having the music kind of die out when you lose a level, really makes me want to get back into it and keep hearing the song. I also loved the sound effect of a successful turn. Very cool effect with the pixelation and varying the values on the wires. I enjoyed the level select screen, it was so perfect for the game you were making. The wires with their color coding, and various turns that were indicative of the level you were about to play was a nice touch. Good job.

Cool idea, never seen anything like it before. Simple style, but it works. One thing which would have made me want to play a lot longer is shortening the respawn time. As it is now I have to sit and wait for maybe 3 whole seconds before I can try again, which is a bit agonizing in such a difficult game. Here's a good source on some different death systems https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6WyalnKQIpg Good work though!

I am throwing my hands up and resigning. It's like the BattleToads level 'Clinger Winger', but after 20 tries I can't get past the first 10 seconds of level 2. The reaction time is far too precise for anyone to accomplish on a first play through, or even the 20th. Maybe having a little leeway on making turns would help (instead of a total game restart, just slow down and run out of time eventually).

The flow from menu to game is really well executed. I went straight to the Don't Play option and was not dissapointed!

Music and art style are the strong points. Game was simple, and I found it frustrating. It was hard, and the reset cycle was so long, with a required level selection step that didn't really add anything, that I wasn't enjoying it. I think I'd rather have seen it more like DDR, i.e. you don't die with every error, but count errors and get a grade, and you need a high grade or perfect score to advance to the next round. I liked the pixely art and the cinematic cutscene pieces. Nice work.

Very nice game idea. At start I was like how hard can this be, but then by level 3 the game became too unforgiving for my taste. Excellent job on graphics, from menus to game play it's a peace of art.

This captivated us for a good 20 minutes or so, it made you want to keep playing and the cut scenes were nice, i am disappointed there is no ending cut scene however makes the finish a little upsetting. this could be good for a mobile game. -Rubi and Bliss

The intro animation is pretty sweet. Overall this game has a bit more content for a LD game i feel. 5 levels and 5 different short music tracks.
It's nice to have a bit variety for the music, on the other hand the music just isn't well made.
The sound effects are nice.

The first three levels were fun. The controls feel responsive and those levels fair.

Level 4 however doesn't let you see what is coming up next. You jump a section and are immediately required to do another input which you can't predict.
So that level requires you to memorize it and execute it well too.

If you keep the difficulty factor, it would at least be nice to see further ahead inside the level so you'll know in beforehand what's next.

Overall, pretty fun and solid controls.

Hi! I liked the game overall, i got to the 4th level but i think the difficulty spiked too hard there. The "jumping" puzzles were too close to each other so you had no time to react. Also I think another set of keys could've been more confortable to use, like left-right instead of up-down, because i had to had my hand in a weird position to play the game.

The tutorial bits were pretty cool (the slowdown and showing the key on the screen), also the intro. Good job :)

The intro and transition into the main menu is quite charming, and the UI is nicely designed and fitting the mood of the game. The music style sounded somewhat out of place though (compared to the nice darkish mood in the level selection)... The concept is well explained, but a little confusing at the beginning (why only *up* and *down* and not *left* and *right*?). I found it had quite a steep difficulty curve, but I guess it's just that kind of game. I got quite frustrated on the second level. The spark gap space bar thingy is very confusing to me, my brain just doesn't like teleportation...

My number of tries used to complete:
- Level 1: 3 tries
- Level 2: 12 tries
- Level 3: 4 tries
- Level 4: rage quit on the 42nd try
- Level 5: wouldn't even wanna try it

I'm clearly not made for this sort of game... :man_shrugging: But I think you did an awesome job and you can be **very** proud of the result! :)

This kind of game stress me so much xD
This was really nicely done.
I liked the music and the "full package" appeirence: the harmony between menus and game.

I have sent it to a friend which love DDR, maybe he will manage to go throught it... I had to quit at level 4 because I was super tense, shamefuly. xD

Really good game, the graphic/music reminds me somehow of McPixel (I don't really know why!) and is quite good.
For me two big pain points were the time i takes to restart the level, and that there is no graphical way to know when to press the buttons (one must memorize the levels while playing, like a blind rhythm game).
The levels difficult increase is really big, but for me tat's not an issue at all. The game is funny to play and probably of the right length for a Compo game, overall I liked it a lot, congratulation on your work!

The teleportation of the spark makes this game too difficult (al least to me) a "jump" of the spark would have made it easier, because it would not create shifts in the timing of one's reflexes.
Good game, couldn't finish it though :disappointed:

I love the UI of the game, really of everything is tied together is quite a sight to behold for a ludum dare. However I found the UX of the death to be really frustrating since it takes so much time to retry a level (and I did die often). Making restarting a level faster would be a huge improvement I think. And Also, I found it quite weird that the vertical scrolling stopped while the current was moving up or down. Maybe you could put the wires in a diagonal way ? This way the global vertical movement of the game would always be at the same speed because the way it is right now is cofusing me when i have to quickly go up and then down. Anyway, good job :)

Very fun and addictive game :D
Unfortunately the last level was too much for me and I had to give up after 40 tries or so. It was also a little frustating to have to watch the fade between the level and the menu over and over again; after trying and trying again the same level it starts to feel soooo long.

Hey, I checked out if I could build it from source. (I have to keep my Java skills up to date anyway). The error I reported isn't the only one. It appears getting the right OpenGL version to work on Mac isn't as easy as it should be. So I'm giving up, and looking for a windows machine. :)

NP, if someone goes through the trouble of porting a game to macOS, I feel I should help out if I can. Anyways, played it on Windows.

The mechanic reminds me of perhaps the hardest of BattleToads levels, with some added twists. The background music is very nice. To me the difficulty curve could be a bit smoother, but it was doable in the end. The graphics have some kind of charm which I like. It's a simple yet fun entry! (And props for using low level stuff for making your entry.)
