Eat Your Ammo!

Grow corn for your revolutionary CORN THROWER home defence solution! (It's also delicious!)

Since the nukes, it's been impossible to grow anything in this barren soil, so the CORN THROWER doubles as an innovative new way to plant delicious, nutritious maize corn IN THE BODIES OF YOUR ENEMIES. There is a handy second trigger to bathe the bedded seeds in FERTILIZING BLOOD to maximize the chance of germination! Harvest quickly, the conditions are not ideal in this world, and each corpse will only last a single harvest!

Good luck!

Controls

WASD - Move Mouse - Aim Left Click - Fire Corn from CORN THROWER Right Click - Shoot FERTILIZING BLOOD E - Eat Corn to Heal R - Immediate reload

Tips

  • Ghoul corpses are really bad at holding nutrition, so try to get to them quickly and bathe them in as much blood as possible. The blood is absorbed when it fades away.
  • Getting caught without any corn is pretty much a death sentence
  • Farming is difficult, but this is reflected in the scoring!

Reflection

So this was built in C++ on top of an engine I made entirely in LD40, and I think it's starting to show how much I could do with expanding it. I did really enjoy writing the particle engine this time and converting to a more 3d-ish behaviour. On top of that, I actually made the compo deadline, woo!

I wish I had time to implement sound, and a couple more guns / enemy types would be good, but hey ho, I've enjoyed it!

Hope you all enjoy giving it a try, and you had a good LD!

Post-release changelog: Fixed two bugs related to plants. 1. Plants weren't dying of age, so fixed the timout there. 2. Corpses that weren't converted to plants were fading out and contributing to the death count

You can find the original version on the releases page of my linked github.

That was pretty funny. It's a little difficult to tell exactly what causes corn to grow, but it's easy enough to get it growing so it doesn't really matter.

Probably the best improvement would simply be audio.

I had a lot of fun playing. Gameplay was smooth and felt pretty balanced. Great concept as well. Even more impressive that you build it on your own engine. Good job!

Good job with the game. I had a fun time playing it and spray shooting the corn was pretty satisfying. One thing that would help this game out is more player feedback through either sounds or small indicators when you harvest.

A solid top-down shooter with an interesting twist. I agree a bit with what other has said. A bit more player feedback and basic sound could improve it.

I really enjoyed the core gameplay, these kinds of games have always been one of my favourites. I really liked the fake 3D effect on the bullets and the **FERTILIZING BLOOD**. And I agree with the above two people, some more audio cues would be much appreciated.

Also, I'd just like to mention a common game jam trap: running out of bullets when the only way to get bullets is through killing. I think I got to that state, but I died shortly afterwards so I couldn't tell.

Nice one. I wish there were more feedback to it, like enemies healthbars and some sort of immediate response whenever a seed is planted. Also it looks like eating corn doesn't use any of it. Also, some sounds would make it so much better. I still enjoyed the hell out of it, great job!

Nice graphics. Interesting mechanics but not clear what should I do without a peep.
