The Big One by Likirus

[raw]
made by Likirus for LD 39 (COMPO)

The city has been hit by a major earthquake. There is a lot of chaos and the humans are struggeling with their own problems, but the local animal shelter is forgotten... The door is being kept closed by a bunch of hidden capacitors and batteries. The animals need to find them and short them out before they starve...

Theme Idea

While the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about "running out of power" is some kind of system that should be supplied with power for as long as possible ( e.g. life support ) I went with the opposite approach of a system that needs to run out of power as quickly as possible.

Technology

I decided to go for HTML5 this time and try to create a game with it. I didn't have a lot of time so I went with the "higher level" functions of HTML5 compared to C++ to save some time and it has the added benefit of being extremely platform independent. The graphics/images could have been a lot better but I ran out of time and energy to keep working on them.

Tools

  • Images: Photoshop
  • Music: http://earslap.com/page/otomata.html, Audacity
  • Sounds: http://www.bfxr.net/, Audacity
  • Editor: Notepad++

EDIT

W,A,S,D works now in Chrome, Firefox and Edge

some people mentioned that W,A,S,D didn't move the dog, it worked in Chrome but didn't in Firefox & Edge. I actually tested all of these browsers with the offline version before uploading and they all worked fine, but I only tested the chrome version after uploading. Firefox uses some kind of fast loading javascript thing that apparently didn't want to work when using 'const', I changed everything back to magic numbers and now it works.

Well, I don't know what I was expecting, but it definitely wasn't a dog pissing on batteries

Pretty sure this is a take on the theme I'm not going to see anywhere else

For whatever reason, it's not letting me move around. Will withhold rating for now.

Pretty intuitive, the graphics are nice and the mood is cool; the amount of food could have been consumed faster tough, I finished with more than half of it, nevertheless the game is cool, good job!

Good stuff, nice interpretation of the theme!

The direction keys wouldn't work on mac (chrome and safari), but it worked fine on windows

Interesting idea, I think adding a challenge to the game such as enemies or a time limit would have made it more exciting.

Works fine, but it was a little difficult to find all batteries in time.

Pretty simple, but complete. Well done.

Good game. I found it hard to get through the top and bottom doors sometimes. Also how do you replenish your food meter. I could not collect any of the food on the ground. Cool game though. Good job!

Decent game, amusing premise. I liked the idea of having two abilities that had differing cooldowns and you had to get the hang of managing them for the optimal time. I would have liked to see the theme explored a bit more with the mechanics of the game, rather than just as a timer to complete the game or fail. In all, good job!

Interesting premise. I'm not sure if you're supposed to be able to interact with the bowls of food, but that would be a nice feature.

Interesting idea. I found it very hard to control the dog as he moved so fast. Because of this it took me quite some time to hit a battery. Also there was way too little time to find everything and it was quite hard to find everything. But good to see an other interpretation of the theme.

Pissing on batteries-now that's a weird way of escaping the house. The gameplay is a little finicky as the dog gets caught on the doorways. Completed it.

I like your theme interpretation.

It would be nice that the dog sprite changed when going up, down and left.

Good job on your first HTML5 game!
