Deep Space Prospector by Roidz

[raw]
made by Roidz for LD 44 (JAM)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Description

Deep Space Prospector is a mining/survival/exploration/space shooter with a nice mood to it (I hope). Roam the vast space of the cMonkeys Empire for precious energy. Upgrade your ship during your adventure to survive scavengers and be able to pay the Empire's energy tax. Punishment for not paying your tax is death!

Info

This game is made during Ludum Dare 44 as a solo project, with the support of Deozaan testing and giving me tips, and my wife Kristel taking care of me while being sick. :)

Being sick, I didn’t have the energy (no pun intended) to work 'full time' on this game. I had to take my rest now and then, but I’m glad how it turned out. If people would enjoy the game I wouldn’t mind working more on it, adding multiplayer and a lot more content.

The great music is made by Icydemon, so therefore I opted out on music. I didn’t have enough time to make a tune myself, and frankly - I loved this one too much to not use it. ;)

Controls

Can be found and configured in-game… enjoy!

Whoo, I love games that start slow. This is a lovely game with a nice progression. And the shoot effects <3 !! I had fun.

The particle effects, graphics, sound design and fine balance all contributed to a great and very polished game feel. My first 5/5 this LD.

I had 75 points. I purchased capacity and thrusters. Had 25 points left but couldn't buy the mine beam upgrade for 25. Why is that? Starts out a little slow but really feels nice towards the end. Great atmosphere.

I like the game graphics and sounds were all good. I only didn't get enough energy to progress and they don't re-spawn so I was stuck but a solid 4/5. If you have time check out my game too :v:

Really fun game! I think I managed to kill every enemy in the beta sector but I don't think there was enough energy to go to the gamma sector.

The only obvious problem I saw was that the enemies could shoot you while you were in the shop. Another thing I would've liked is energy orbs re-appearing after some time, since on one of my playthrough I depleted every energy orb but bought too many upgrades so I couldn't progress to the beta sector.

Nice controls though, was fun to drift around and explore. Oh, and I got 2 kills with one shot, that felt awesome :D Well done!

-That's because the shop won't allow you to end up with zero energy. Thanks for the nice words. i'll rate your game later!

Yeah that makes sense I suppose. It didn't occur to me the 'shopkeeper' may care more than I do about having enough fuel to make it far enough away. Thanks for the clarification.

Nice game, simple and effective, the combat is a bit too difficult for me, and the ship movement feels a bit slow!

I dig the combat and overall mood. Progression was a bit too slow to my liking.

Yeah, busting up enemy ships feels real good. Nice and clunky ship controls, too. Took a while to adjust but before long I was slingshotting all over the place.

I really appreciate that control changes are just a tab away. I immediately ran into ghosting problems with the default setup, so being able to remap within 3 seconds is a fantastic thing to have, I want to keep this in mind for the next jam.

Thanks!

I like the minimalist colors with bright saturated highlights. Very pleasing! A fun game.

I've seen a couple similar interpretations of this theme already, but this one is pretty well polished (especially given how sick you were!) I like how turning is hyper precise but forward movement is clunky, it's the right mix of fun and frustrating. The music and art style contribute to a spooky mood too.

I think you're right in that the game could use some more varied content given how long the "phases" are, but that's a post-jam kind of things :D

Nice game! I was surprised when I found the warp shop and saw how expensive it was to go to the later sectors, I wasn't expecting the game to be that large. I only made it to the beta sector though.

This is very good. I don't really know what to say about this game. I feel that you finished what you set out to do and the result is pretty polished and complete.

Good job.

Slow but still pretty engaging. Nice particle effects and music. I really dig your take on the theme -- the whole 'one resource' thing works really well. If you do work more on it, I think it would be worth it to tweak it to have a faster pace. Maybe have some smaller orbs that can be picked up by flying over them.

Very nice game and I love how everything was tied to the theme of space nicely. I do feel that the song didn't loop well as you can clearly tell when the song starts and stops. That's just a nitpick because his truly was a good game. keep up the good work!

Mood is great, and the particles effects are really good. If I may suggest putting a visual clue when mining orbs (after re-reading the controls I figured out)

Great atmosphere! The music, particle effects, and fireworks explosion when killing an enemy were very well done. One bug: I collected all the energy in the first sector, and then when I teleported to the second sector a message saying "you mined all the energy in the sector, game over" appeared. I thought the controls were well balanced! Clearly you did some playtesting and tweaking to make them feel right. Good entry!

The price for some warp zones seems unreachable. Unless I missed something in the tutorial . It was fun to play, here is my attempt:

Thanks a lot for posting your play through video. Was this your first play through ? Impressive, you must have played games like Subspace in the past :)

-And yeh, this has been commented a few times: - The other Sectors are a bit extreme priced to hide the fact they are not in the game yet :)

Nice game ! Pretty amazed by the content, the run is quite long to do : D I like games like that, were you start with little stats, and get more and more powerfull. The more you're into the game, the more you want to play : D

Mood is also nice, feels like alone in outer space ^_^

Very nice angame with great progression system. I've felt it very immersive since beggining and didn't find any bugs at all. Well polished as well, well done!

Explosions are spectacular - bright, sudden and emotional. The mood is matching well with deepness of space. Reminds me of Oids and Subspace :)

I see why you wanted to use that music, it just fit the game so perfectly! This was a well polished game experience. As I was flying around in my ship mining energy essence I thought to myself that it would be awesome if there were more areas to mine in. I just assumed there was only the one area, and that is when I came upon the pink shopping cart! I was like "Oooo, I wonder what goodies this shop holds". I was pleasantly surprised when I saw it was 4 other areas! Then I saw the prices and looked at how much I currently had (225) and was like "Yeah I'm going to need to do a bunch of overtime to get that much energy" Congrats on completing the Jam!

Great entry! Very nice feel and mood to it, and it was fun and enjotable to play and explore. I got hit with a game over my first warp, but I guess that was intended? (I emptied out all the energy on the current map before warping.) Other than that, it was a bit hard to understand what the different upgrades did. (Did the mine beam increase energy yield or just mining speed? Did the thruster upgrade increase handling or turning speed?) Starving yourself from a warp by buying upgrades was a bummer, but fits thematically.

Great job!
