Lovebug by Pix3m

[raw]
made by Pix3m for LD 38 (COMPO)

A simple game of one love bug making their way to another lovebug from across the pond. Jump from pad to pad as you slowly paddle your way there! A few dragonflies may be in your way though.

The idea was a setting where you play as a bug, that lives on a very self-sufficient but small world. This is a smaller game than what my typical game jam projects are, but I got plenty of rest and is easily one of my least stressful jams!

I must say the romantic theme and immersive art was the 2 things that helped me pull through this game. The difficulty level was up the roof.

When the game started, the tutorial dialog about paddle was halfway off the screen for me, so I didn't see it at all until my 5th try or so. And there's no mention at all of the fruits, so after dozens of death I calculated that the only way I can reach the lady is to use only 1 single fly spray at the tutorial point, saving all my love point for the long paddle part - which is probably impossible. Even when I finally found out about the fruit it was not an easy game, took me another 3 tries after that to finally reach the goal.

The ending was quite lovely though, worth the effort I guess.

Beautiful game. The graphics is really cute. I loved the paddling action and the intuitive map on top. Great work. I really enjoyed playing it!

It's really cool game!

I like art and ability to move whole islands. But I think, it's a little bit more difficult, than it should be.

Graphic pixel style is gorgeous! An emotional "story" and nice audio : a good experience for me. Nice interpretation of small world too. It's easy and fun to play : I love it.

Beautiful art and sound. The animations really sell it. I think the difficulty ramps up a bit too much in the end. I also got shafted by a dragonfly spawn as I was jumping between lily pads which made me lose with no chance to redeem the playthrough.

This game is so cool!!!! And cute!

At first I thought it would be an easy game, but the last big gap makes you think for a while, like a little puzzle.

Overall, this game provides a great experience (and the art is amazing)

Thank you all for the feedback, version 1.1 is rebalanced for an easier difficulty - Dragonflies reappear less frequent (the wait time is more than twice as long), and the lilypads are rearranged so the tutorial section cannot be skipped unintentionally.

This is a gorgeous, well rounded game. I really like the lily pad 'mini map' at the top of the screen, and the ability to push the lily pads around was something fresh. I thought I just sucked at it, but I see other comments are also pointing out that it is a bit difficult.

Have a look at our game, Solar Smash if you're interested: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/space-jam-working-title

A very charming game indeed. The visuals are very well refined and the audio is calm and relaxing. I can tell that the gameplay is meant to be a bit slower paced, but things could eventually get very repetitive when you have to paddle long distances. The game was also very punishing, making you restart the whole game if you fall into the water once. I didn't wind up completing the game because I got more than half way, died, and didn't want to repeat the whole thing over again. Maybe having checkpoints would help, or maybe you could just lose some life and spawn on the last lily pad when you fall into the water. Despite this frustration, I enjoyed myself with this game.

The difficulty was perfect. It forced me to explore and learn all the game mechanics to be able to complete the game. I loved the cohesiveness of the game. From the sounds to aesthetic to gameplay, everything felt right at home together. All said, what a fantastic little game!

Haven't beat it yet, I got really close however but died. Great entry though, really enjoyed the premise and the art style. The music was really nice too, really ambient and calming. I will try to beat this some other time. But for now, just know you have a great entry here.

Wow! The art is fantastic, the moving feels good, and there's the pad-moving, which is a great mechanic! Well done! My main suggestion would be to highlight the health bar more.

Loved it, sweet theme, simple but fun gameplay, beautiful art, good and fitting music. As others have said the only downside was I couldn't see the health bar (it was just off screen) until i guessed that ALT + Enter made it full screen. Excellent

I want to beat it so badly!! It's a beautiful game and I love it! Now I'll be off to finally beat the game.

Dang it, the dragonfly killed me on the last jump... maybe I'll try again next time... Great game though.

You have done a great job making a beautiful little experience, well done! The only thing I would change is the paddling mechanic to somehow make it more interesting and fun to do.
