Key Sacrifice by Marc Garcia-Penche

[raw]
made by Marc Garcia-Penche for LD 43 (COMPO)

A simple infinite runner with a procedural map and a twist, the jump key changes every time you jump. Why? The key God takes it as a sacrifice.

Oh this is clever; it's practically a typing tutor. Pretty unforgiving - I wish the jump were just a little bit higher - but I think with practice I could get the hang of it. The background visuals are cool. Nice work!

I like the concept, i think you should increase the speed at which the player is moving in the beginning as to make it harder. But overall it was well made!

I wanted the beginning to be a bit more forgiving. As the score gets higher the movement gets faster. Thanks for the feedback!

Thanks... now i see my screen all pink. Both modes were too hard for me though  The sound is a bit repetitive, but overall well made.

Wow, really nice game. I found it really addictive! One thing I would suggest is to add some checkpoints so you don't lose all of your progress every time you die.

Managed to do better on extreme than hard! Really tested my knowledge of the keyboard :P Love your idea! My screen looked very yellow after closing the game, I'd started seeing everything in pink lol!

I'm starting to think that I increased the saturation too much

My high score was 16396. I think the jumping is a bit too precise, even at the start, you have to be *very* exact with your timing or else you'll miss it (either hit the front of a pink block or any part of a red one). And I realise it's procedural but more than once I came across jumps I'm pretty sure were impossible (jumping off a pink block in a gap then running into the front of a pink block on a platform before I could jump again).

But I'm not sure I can hold those against you, since it's like a great many of the games I've come across (and almost certainly mine): a good beginning, which could be great with a bit more tweaking, and could be excellent if you wanted to develop it further (maybe make a faster twitchier version for controllers since they don't have so many buttons and your hands should always be in the right place).

P.S. Yes I found it very magenta, but it didn't bother me too much because I try to live my life highly saturated anyway.

The extreme difficulty is a must, the hard doesn't have the sacrifice feel but is actually a nice way to introduce the game and allow bad players (like me) to actually play the game. Although the graphics and sounds are simple, they fit very well in what the game presents, and end up not being a distraction for the difficulty it quickly presents. Nice entry.

Well done and cool idea, but I wish the main mechanic wasn't only in extreme difficulty :p

My highscore is something like 24000. I tried but i couldn't go further  Jumping key didn't changed, do it change later than 24000 ?

@berkin the jump key only changes on the extreme difficulty.

@raisethedead thank you! Means a lot. I will probably improve the game as much as I can and put it on the play store.

I liked all the visual effects and the idea of a platformer typing game is really intriguing. I wish that the game started off a little easier.

Neat idea! Makes me wonder about the boundary between typing games and abstract controls...

This is pretty good! I like the simplicity of it, the gameplay reminded me of Super Meat Boy Forever. The purple / pink colour scheme was a great choice and created a really interesting tone. Good work! :)

I really liked the simple mechanic of this, and how it works as a typing tutor of sorts. I think the jumps were much too tight to pull off, though, making the game difficult without adding anything. The sound loop was a bit short but still a nice touch instead of silence. With some polish on the graphics and gameplay I think this could easily be a great way to learn to touch type.
