Book of Fire by andre-606

[raw]
made by andre-606 for LD 43 (COMPO)

In "Book of Fire" you need to find your way out of misterious dungeon. At your disposal are the great powers of an Ancient Flame, but they come at a price. Will you be able to defeat those incomprehensible forces, or fall as one of the many sacrifices?

UPD:

Controls seem to be too obscure so I'll put them here. - A, D - Move - Space - Jump - E - Interact (some interactions will cost you hp) - LMB - Hit (requires Dagger) - RMB - Cast fireball (requiers Book, will cost some hp) - hold Q - Consume nearby corpses to heal (requires Book and, obviously, corpses)

You can also check Browser Version of the game or Post-LD Version.

P.S. Well, Ludum Dare has a bad habit of happening at the worst possible time for me. And that is unfortunate because the theme this time is pretty good. So I finished what i can and hope you enjoy it.

It was very unpolished game and idea is not the most original but I can see that you tried your best. Some critical problems were 1) jump didn't feel right and didn't work sometimes next to walls. 2) music was repetitive after a while it annoyed me. I actually ignored the fire throwing mechanic lol and finished the game with only knife. I hope you do better next time! Keep at it!

I liked the art style and animations. I found the controls a little hard to use, and I died a whole lot - it might have been nicer to have a little easer time to start and to get used to what was going on. Nice work.

The good part is the art is pretty good, the music is fine. The bad is not stating the controls to the game, took me a while to figure them out also difficulty was frustrating.

This is a good solid all rounder. graphics, audio, gameplay and design. All great and vital for a compo entry so well done! :)

Unpolished, but apparently you ran into some issues while creating the game, so I can understand (I had not enough time either ;) )

I like the idea of sacrificing yourself to progress, but you're regularly forced to take damage when you're supposed to save your health for later. Before getting the Book of Fire, you're forced to ran into at least one trap. The fact that the jump button is the spacebar doesn't help either, it should have been mapped to the W or Up Arrow keys for more convenience. Also, the Book of Fire throws fireballs at you instead of the enemies. I don't know if it was intentional or not, I'll just assume it's a bug.

But in the end, you managed to get a game out in a shorter period of time than most other people here, so can only encourage you to get better next time ;)

You used interesting concept, but generally the game seems a bit raw :/

I really liked the art and the music, especially when the guitar did the waaaa. I found it punishing because I lost a lot of blood and didn't gain much back. Good job :smiley_cat:

Thank you for all your feedback, ppl. It's all very appreciated.

I finally had time to fix staff and generally polish the game, so yeah, post-LD version is here: https://andre6o6.itch.io/book-of-fire

This is a really solid entry, if a bit short. I really liked the feeling I had when I saw the spiders in the corner and said to myself, "Hmmm, if I attack them I'll take damage but I could use the healing." Great to create that decision. Could see this mechanic going far if you made a fuller game out of it.

Cool game mechanics and implementation of the theme, but it was pretty difficult in the beginning and the controls need to be more responsive. Other than that, keep it up!

Good execution. Well pleased with your use of theme. Punishing to play and that pleases me.

I really like the concept of using blood as currency to open doors, activate weapons, and be won from killing enemies. I ran into the same annoyances as other people with jumping near walls, but the biggest annoyance was a minor one: it felt like there was a minor delay between using the dagger and the effect actually triggering, then another one before it could be used again. Those delays were long enough that spiders would often bounce and get me before (it felt like) I could possibly have struck them again to stay safe.

Oh, man, having the FPS control style in the platformer frustrated me so much...
Anyway, I like a concept of blood as a currency and health.
Keep rocking!
