Hibernaculum

Description:

Hibernaculum is a puzzle game in which you take a role of a person who is stuck in Snow Globe. Your goal is to make your way out. But... :open_mouth: you cannot move in any other direction but left and right. Fortunately, someone is helping you by rotating the "Small world" of yours to help you out. While the globe rotates, you don't. Exploit this to your advantage. :wink:

Hints/Walkthrough:

  • You can jump and rotate, the player will stay in the air while you rotate;
  • Wile you rotate interesting things have lens flares;
  • Read the item descriptions;
  • When the world just resets after the rotation, it means the player would've stuck, so it didn't allow it;
  • Sometimes you can get inside some places that look solid.

SPOILERS!

  • Level 1:
    • Collect the sword in the ruins;
    • Collect the knight's helmet next to spawn;
    • Collect the shield behind the forest near the mountain;
    • Go back to the spawn, enter the newly spawned portal;
    • Riddle answer: "Sword".

@binaryferret Thank you so much! The concept was thought mostly by my friend @redpanda

The game is really adorably cute! The graphics and atmosphere are amazing.
The Moment I started the game in the browser I immediately stopped and downloaded the title, to play it in the quality it was meant to be.

It's a little icky that you can't walk freely inside the globe, but your z-depth is actually important to solve the puzzle. Speaking of puzzles - getting the timing down for the jumps isn't super easy, but the idea for that mechanic is great.

I enjoyed the few minutes of exploring the snowglobe. :)

cheers~

Really beautiful game, I just had to play it on seeing the screenshots. The music was also lovely, shame it didn't loop for me, the game really lost something without it.

It took me a while to figure out the controls, but I managed to get the hang of it and completed the first level, though jumping between the boxes took several attempts to get right, it's quite hard to tell what angle your character is jumping toward when zoomed out, and the hand often got in the way.

However, I was able to complete the game, and I enjoyed the experience. This is incredibly good for a three day game, and I hope you continue to develop this concept further, I'd love to be able to play even more levels.

Hi, what an amazing mood, graphics and take of the theme. But I had some trouble to apprehend the controls.

i really like the idea, the graphics was fantastic, the mechanic idea was good but was frustrating, the player get stuck and the globe reset my movements every time, have little room for error on collisions... but after all a very good submission

Idea is amazing. Great graphics, sadly the music doesn't loop. Gameplay is acceptable, please tweak collision detection so it is more forgiveable. Can be frustrating :) All in all very nice!

This is such a good concept and it looks very good. The only thing i didn't like was the fact you could only walk left and right i wanted to explore more.

29. Apr 2017 · 12:33 UTC
@npizzle1 the ideas was to constrain the player, so they have the need to rotate world. We too thought about not constraining the player, but decided to do it to encourage the main mechanic.

Me and @quaternius are going to discuss the future of this game soon, so I'll bring the issue back. :wink:

Thank you for the feedback!

@elzach Thank you ! I'm glad you enjoyed the game, you can follow my or @redpanda 's twitter account to see where the game goes from now on.
@historymaker118 @marin0104 We are aware that looping doesn't work! I forgot to check a box on unity, my mistake. Thank you!
@rixud Getting the movement and collisions was really hard, and in three days we didn't have much time to improve on that, as @redpanda had to remake the player controller three times! Thank you.
@louspirit Yeah the controls are pretty unusual, thank you!

Beautiful game, hard to control. The concept was good, but it was very difficult to get the game to register you trying to rotate while jumping. Super impressed with everything visual.

@jeremy-ryan @jorbits @aierz Sorry to hear you find the controls difficult. I assume the problem is too sensitive clip detection that rotates the world back?

Also @aierz, sorry to hear you had the pink screen problem, we don't have a mac to test the game on :(

Pretty cool idea, awesome graphics. Probably worth expanding to large version with more levels.
Ludum Dare version is too small unfortunately, I've more struggled with controls (trying to understand when globe is rotating and when it's not) than playing actual game D:

Very nice game, thanks for making it. Could have used a proof reader for some of the text and the snow flake was a bit fiddly to collect if you weren't exactly in the middle of the globe. Top ratings all round.

Beautiful concept and astounding atmosphere, this is such a relaxing game. Quite different to the rest of the entries I've come across so far, which brings a refreshing view of the theme.

The visual aspect of the game is simple yet gorgeous, I loved it. The music is calm and ties the whole thing together perfectly. The controls take a bit of fiddling around to get the character where you want it to go but work fine still.

All in all an intriguing concept which is well executed. I liked it! :)

Really interessting concept. I almost love everything about this game, but the walking and rotating the
snowglobe were a little bit frustrating from time to time. I think i would be great if the character could also move up and down. Then the game would feel a little less glitchy i think.
besides that: great entry. one of the best so far.

Such a cute and adorable game. Stellar graphics, and the puzzles were fun and reasonably hard (did struggle to get the snowflake on the second level, but finally figured it out). Oh... and I just read your spoilers above... hehe - that's not how I got to the snowflake.

Wonderful idea and well executed in 72 hours. Great job!

Lovely to see another 3D game done in that style :) I love it! Such a great take on the theme. One piece of feedback is that you shouldn't really change the distance from the edge when you run left and right, it took a friend to point that out when I was getting frustrated not being able to get into the final portal.

01. May 2017 · 21:50 UTC
I love the snow globe mechanic, and enjoyed the art and music. The riddles were cute.

It was possible to end up at the wrong distance from the center of the globe from things. That felt bad.

01. May 2017 · 21:56 UTC
I thought this was really cool. I like the idea behind the movement, but I had a hard time with it. There were a lot of places that I thought I could move to, only to find that I couldn't. The reverse was also true, there were places I thought I couldn't go to that I could. This ended up making traversal feel a bit inconsistent and hampered the experience a bit. The art and music were great though. Overall very good.

Very nice looking, had a few issues with the movement around the snow globe. like sometimes the hand would be in front of where i want to go, so i had to guess if it was the right place to drop. had some issues getting the sword, the game stopped me from dropping there. the game looked very nice when it zoomed out and started rotating I really liked that part

02. May 2017 · 01:45 UTC
Pretty good little game, I got all the way to the end but couldn't activate the final portal! I think a couple of simple usability tweaks would've been nice to make it a bit less frustrating, it was quite hard to jump from box to box for me, maybe a slight pause at the zenith would've been good so you could teleport on it. And another thing was just a simple indicator for when you're "inside" some collision so you know you can't teleport there would've been helpful. Being able to walk around the circumference of the globe rather than just in a straight line would've made more sense too. The puzzle design was quite good though, once the jump + teleport clicked with me it was a nice realisation. And I really loved the art! :) Overall nice job!

Interesting concept! I loved the music and the graphics were pretty. My only issue was that the controls could have been a little better. The globe kept resetting if I didn't place it exactly right. Still though, fantastic overall!

The visuals were super impressive and beautiful The idea was very cool and well done. I think the biggest thing I had issues with was that I kept thinking that you could walk up and down xD The audio was very nice and fitting too and the gameplay was quite unique and interesting. I enjoyed it and I think it's very well done for the short time that LD gives.

Fabulous work. The game enchanted me with it's superlative graphics, sound and mood but then sadly the spell was broken with my struggle to work out the controls. I look forward to see where you take it in the future. For me as much as I like the concept of the controls I don't think minor tweaks would overcome the downsides. I love the idea of having normal controls and then certain magical actions or artifacts triggering the globe rotation. All the best with your continued efforts with the game.

I mean.. wow. I want to explore this world more, get inside the castle and move around a bit, and the hut too. I know that was a gameplay limitation but overal style is amazing and it appeals to explore.

Also why don't you double a rotation control on the keyboard too? There is no reason to require a mouse for this type of gameplay, I think. (or make it just optional)

And maybe some snowflakes floating in a snow part since it's a snowglobe.

Here is my playthrough: https://youtu.be/LI67e0k_Bcc (I'm bad at riddles, sorry :smiley:)

Thank you for this game! Love it.

Love this game, all I think it needs is work on the level design and collision to make some of the puzzle solutions easier(The Box jumping puzzle in the snowy area was challenging to get right)

Beyond that more levels!

02. May 2017 · 15:15 UTC
The rotation reset is a bit finicky. Preferable I think would be if it just said "eh, close enough", and put you where you were trying to get to, even if your feet are not entirely above the box or whatever. Other than that minor annoyance, however, this is a really excellent game. Great concept, great art style and graphics, and great music. I really wanted to play a few more levels!

This is pretty awesome! (Snow globes too!) The controls/rotation was a bit finicky, but not enough to take away from the mood (including gfx/audio). Critically, I'm not sure whether the moving purely in a straight line was the best decision when the world is round - it led to a few frustrating getting stuck at places situations, but that's a minor complaint in an otherwise great 3-day creation!
Skosnowich
03. May 2017 · 16:09 UTC
The gameplay idea is very nice and the puzzles are good. I also had the feeling that moving in a straight line didn't work very well. It misses some sort of feedback if you rotate the globe and you don't manage to pick an empty spot. Altogether though, it was a nice and fun game. With some polishing and more levels it will be great. :)

What a lovely game! This game has such great visual, and combined with the music made it much more beautiful. I really like the puzzle solving aspect of the game, and the addition of riddle is much appreciated

The only thing I have to criticize is, like most already pointed out, the control was a bit finicky. Also I ran into a bit of problem in the second level, where my character was at the same level with the object, but due to the z-axis difference, I couldn't able to pick up the object.

Overall, I think you guys definitely did a great job here!
bacontree
08. May 2017 · 15:44 UTC
Sometimes the rotation didn't work when I released the globe. I realised after a while that it was because of collisions with the player. That could have been clearer. I also think the movement would have felt smoother if she kept the same distance to the glass at all times, as it made it quite difficult to rotate the globe and walk her to the items sometimes.

Other that that, the graphics are amazing, and the music is really nice and comfortable, which makes for a great mood in the game. Good job!

The graphics are really beautiful but I found the gameplay a bit lacking... I didn't find the rotating of the globe that intuitive. The controls were also a bit glitchy. I was stuck when I collected the 3 items and had to fill in my answer. I just wasn't able to type something...

It does have potential and I hope you continue work on it :)

I also created a snow globe game, but didn't get as far as your team. This was a very complete experience. It has an innovative control method, but unfortunately the controls made it frustrating. Especially the globe turning. It has nice graphics and music. I think perhaps with a traditional control scheme and a focus on the puzzles, it has potential.
