Backpack Apocalypse by Richard Scott

made by Richard Scott for LD 40 (JAM)

Its my first time doing a ludum dare after 5 years of gamedev, what could go wrong eh?...

So for my game I decided to make a top down zombie shooter where there are no backpacks. This means that every item that you pick up to help you survive makes you move slower and turn more sluggishly. The aim is to find the 4 car components in the level to escape the zombies.

With this game I also wanted to have a go with using unitys "new" UI system as I'd been avoiding it for the past year or so and I'm happy with results, anchoring and things changing position was abit of a pain to get the hang of though.

Controls:

W,A,S,D - Move

E - Pick up item

Right Click - Punch/Shoot

So I played for about 15 minutes. Before webgl ran out of memory, possibly due to the amount of zombie bits lying around. I got 12gb ddr3 so that shouldn't really be happening.
It was fun. I think the range of melee attacks is way too long for both the player and the zombies. Though once I got the rifle and some ammo the game was way too easy. Sure I was slow but as long as you can lead a shot it didn't matter. A potential fix for that would be having gunshots attract the zombies.

My favorite part was "in an alternate reality where backpacks weren't invented" ha. Would've liked some more info on the minimap, I lost my car and never found it again. I think some more aggression from the zombies would've been good. You can run into them/push them around as long as it's from the side or back and they don't react. I don't have a great suggestion for how to solve, but most of the game I was walking slooowly back to my car which wasn't that fun. Very well executed art, music, etc... I felt it could benefit from a bit more intensity to pickup the slower bits.
