Snakeout by BoltKey

[raw]
made by BoltKey for LD 41 (COMPO)

A combination of two truly classic genres - breakout and snake.

Play in your browser: https://boltkey.cz/snake-out/.

snakeout-logo.png

In Snakeout, you score by making balls hit tiles you create.

Die by crushing either into another tile or a ball.

Here is a gameplay time lapse of the Arcade mode

ld41gif5.gif

There are 4 modes of play.

  • Arcade: The snake gets faster over time and can collect useful powerups. The default mode.
    • Yellow powerup: adds another ball to the game
    • Red powerup: makes all the balls explosive
    • Blue powerup: balls can slice through walls
  • Triball: Test your multitask skills and don't crash into any of the 3 balls!
  • Pro: Fast speed of snake, with just one ball. Show your snake skills and trap that ball into narrow spaces to score a lot!

  • Tactic: Plan ahead and prepare traps for the ball in advance. In this mode, there is one slow snake and one fast ball.

Your highscores are connected to the IP you play from. Sorry about that, but there was no better solution at the time.

Clever game mechanics, good sound effects and physics - didn't feel glitchy or slow at all.

So really great idea and hard to play. Damn! That boll break snake's head... Again...

Supplement mechanicks make this game solid and playable :)

Very nice small game. All it needs is a graphics polish and some music to make it feel complete!

@JCMonkey Thanks, glad you liked it!

@john-darrington Thanks, although I know the balls bounce in a way they should not. But mostly, it works.

@Poroh I have a bad habit of making challenging games... Hope it was not frustrating for you!

@Andreadbx Thanks, at first, I had no inspiration, but in the end, I got something usable.

@radical-dog All my past musical creations went horrible and made the game worse, you are right some music would be nice, but I just didn't make any. Could you be more specific about graphic polish? Which parts you didn't like? Which graphical effects would you want to see added?

nice game, I think music would make it more fun and some polished graphics would also help. But fun concept, highest score I got was around 70. I like that you can combine the power ups to make them stronger. I like that you can combine the power ups to make them strong

Duuuude, I have so much fun with this game, I hope you will upgrade it and I want to play upgraded version as well.
Why there is no music in your game? Some 8-bit music will suit to it

@mAnimal There is no music because I cannot make good music, nor had time for that. Which kind of upgrades of the game you would want to see?

@Jiri_One Be more specific about the graphics please, I quite like it as it is. What feels unpolished about current version?

Fun and simple! Nice work on the leader board and extra modes. I'd add a "head" to the snake because it gets a bit confusing sometimes for me. Also one time the leader board appeared while I was still playing.

Great game! It's really addicting. I genuinely see myself playing this every now and then.

@el-pepi Nice catch, never had that happen to me. It should be fixed now. I was considering adding a head, but ended up not doing that, because it usually was quite clear to me where exactly I was. Maybe I will try to tweak the head rendering a little.

@drikdrok Glad you like it, really appreciate it! I play it every now and then, and still have fun!

@boltkey
there is some issue with turning just befor block, just movement, it is hard todescribe the issue just try to tur just before you hit the block. When the block is there is harder for a player to make turn in time

Very creative game and a lot of fun. The arcade gamemode with all the upgrades added a lot to the game. It reminds me of "Achtung, die kurve!" but with the twist of the ping pong game mechanics. I had a lot of fun trying to develop techniques to best play the game.

The sound effects were great but in my opinion did not "match" the art of the game, or rather the art could have been improved to not look as primitive and maybe look more arcade-ish. I think the colours could be changed and that would significantly improve the look of the game.

I understand that it's not easy for everyone to create music but I really appreciate when the game is not completely silent. I would suggest using a tool such as [Abundant Music](https://pernyblom.github.io/abundant-music/index.html) or [Jukedeck](https://www.jukedeck.com) and create music with the power of AI :)

The leaderboard was a nice feature and it adds a lot to this kind of game. Well done!

This is probably the best take of the "combine 2 genre" theme by far. Amazing concept and executed really well. Great game!

Pure genius, well executed. You get a shiny golden star, my friend. Art & sound might be improved, though. Perhaps just having the balls as circled rather than balls?

Addictive. Maybe the collision area on the ball slightly too large. It felt like I got hit a few times when it wasn't close enough.

So cool to see this. Two simple mechanics, of well known games, makes a perfect combination. Congrats!

@Linus I had Achtung die Kurve in mind, one idea was to make the snake move just like Kurves, but that was far too hard to make work. With sounds, I was aiming for satisfying and soft sounds that don't get annoying after a while. Graphics could be changed, you are right. Thanks for great feedback!

@Sholf @Rombus Thanks! The theme ended up being quite inspiring!

@Vyolfers Practice makes perfect :wink:

@Blinkenlights I focused on the gameplay, so audio and graphics were not that flexed out.

@Lerc Maybe it was because of the explosions of red balls? Even when you get hit by the explosion, you die.

@acoto87 Thanks! Honestly, I was quite surprised to see that it actually worked so nicely once I made it!

I would have loved to see this with a bit more graphical polish but the idea and the genre mixing is very clever and well done!

Super creative and ingenious way to combine 2 well-known games. I love how each individual game is really quick, allowing for lots of trial and error, and I love how chaotic the screen gets once you have a streak going for a while. The textures are a little basic, but the gameplay more than makes up for it.

Thanks for all the comments!

@FormalCloud Soon...

@edj99 Short individual length but high replay value was what I was aiming for. I didn't have much time to really make the graphics nice, gameplay was my number 1 priority with this game.

@samuel-henderson @Keithdae I felt like when I changed the gameplay variables, there were always some interesting new aspects of the gameplay. I ended up making multiple modes, because I just couldn't decide!

Nice take on the theme, the mechanics were solid as well (with snake games this is important) Good work!

I think this game is good for the theme because I think both "game types" indeed make the other problematic. Snake movement is restrictive, and relatively slow. You will fill up the screen if you dont get power ups, but powerups make it harder to survive, but then you dont get many points if you don't get powerups. So quite a few decisions to be made by the player, I was personally very bad at this game :D but regardless, good implementation - if there was effort made with sound and improved visuals this would have gone down even better!

OMG, this is such an addictive game! I have played for over an hour, but now I am in the top 10 for every mode. I like how the mechanics go together: you need more and better balls, but that also makes it harder... Great combo, well done!
