Chess Adventure by MoonLens

[raw]
made by MoonLens for LD 44 (COMPO)

Chess adventure, inspired by dota autochess, is the start of an idea i had which is to create an adventure/RPG type game revolved around the fun and strategic gameplay of autochess. I'm sorry for not taking the time to make any music or sound and the minimalist UI, i hope you enjoy the gameplay to make up for that.

Instructions:

  • Before each combat phase, buy units from the shop and place them on your side (left) of the chessboard.
  • You can reposition your own units on your side however you want while the combat hasn't started
  • Once you're happy with your unit placement, press the 'ready' button and the combat will start
  • some units have synergies, they'll appear on the bottom left if you have any
  • You can buy units as long as you have 1 or more life points, if your units lose a combat you're sent back to the start

Got confused at the start with the shop on the right but placing units on the left. Once we got the hang of it it was interesting - pretty easy to win :)

It was a very fun and cool game. I feel like the the theme was a bit of an after thought however. I really liked the art and general gameplay alot. Its a really cool take on chess that you should continue developing if you feel like it!

It's a great idea for a game! I think there needs to be some highlighting where you can place tiles, and some information about how each unit attacks, but it's a great idea and I enjoyed playing it!

I liked this a lot, some music and sound effects would have really given the game some weight!
Keep it up!

I feel like you can make an intersting game out of this basis. With tactical options, etc. Obviously music and sound is missing. But information about the unit types would have been more important, i think.
Good job!

Fascinating and deep! Fits the theme well. Nice job. I'd love to see it expanded on.

I really liked the mechanics. A good strategy game. Missed sound.

This is really fun, personally I would've put the shop on the left side as it is a little bit confusing being placed on the right only to drag it across so far.

I struggled a bit at the start, not understanding well the position of the shop and where to place tiles (maybe some sign or outline will help)

The concept is nice and the theme is fitted at a standard level.

Really suffers from the lacks of sound, it harms a little bit to the overall experience.

It's a nice entry, thanks for your work!

I like the concept of not having direct control over the pieces and having to strategize with only positioning. However, I found it a bit difficult to strategize when the pieces didn't feel very distinct (just ranged and melee as far as I could tell). Maybe having pieces be more specialized (like in chess) would make the positioning more strategic. That said, I still enjoyed my time with this game and there's definitely some promise in this concept.

I like it, the art looks very nice. As a fan of autochess I was happy to see a game like that here in Ludum Dare :)

Overall, really enjoyable game. The features are fun and the pairing character types for buffs is a nice touch

Cool entry, had fun with it. I'd like to see some sound effects though, but other than that it was great! Good job.

Nice game, I really like the character sprites. I think it would have helped a lot if the characters had a description that explains their behaviour but other than that I liked it.

I love the concept and battles, but I do not get the progression between the levels. If that was fleshed out (and the GUI told us more about the units), it would be great.

Despite the lack of audio, this was very cleverly done! Would've benefited from having some additional info about the units' skills, but still enjoyed playing this (beat the game). Great art style and animations!

I really like the sprites, and the concept is auto chess is close to me since Warcraft III times
Sadly I couldn't beat the game.

And this, is an interesting game! It is really cool, the fact that there's no audio is not a problem, but I think there are some easy things you could do to make it better :

- put the shop on the left, since it's your side of the board

- show the archer range

- explain every mob statistics, its health, etc

overall the lack of feedbacks is the biggest problem, but the entry has a lot of potential! Great job

Really fun idea! You also worked it out pretty good with nice graphics and simple UI. It becomes repetitive after 5 minutes. Great game overall!

Super fun! The game does not have a super good sense of progression but I played it for quite a bit without being bored! I absolutely loved the concept for this game! Great work on Chess Adventure!

when you use knights you feel very smart about any strategy ... tried to do a chess based game in the past too ... 1 month after and it was still full of bugs ... no idea how you managed to do it in a weekend ... congrats for the work!

@velvetlobster hahah yeah the AI definitely took a lot of time, i was hoping i'd be able to add unique abilities and stat displays but time ran short

I like dota auto chess too ^^, too bad you don't keep your dead pawns after you win.

@abraxas-interactive I'm glad you enjoy it. I have a big project in mind to expand on this, i don't want to reveal the details, wont start it before i finish my current game anyways which will be in 2-3 months.

At first i was scared that it just some chess game...but i was so wrong! This game got really nice gameplay, nice looking graphics only missing sound/music but as for 1 person compo BIG congrats! This concept reminds me of MtG or something like that! Really enjoyed it!
