Unstoppable Battle of the Neon Arena by Ragoniard

[raw]
made by Ragoniard for LD 40 (JAM)

WELCOME TO THE NEON ARENA, where friends come to slaughter each other in an unstoppable battle.

Unstoppable Battle of the Neon Arena is a two to four player local game in which the players, people who came to know and love each other after years of friendship, kill each other with sabers, missiles and laser beams. Anyone can enter the arena mid-game by plugging a controller in.

Screen Shot 2017-12-05 at 02.57.26.png

Features :

  • Flying across the map to laser your best friend
  • Dropping missiles from above and exploding everyone
  • Cutting through the air with your neon saber
  • Plug and play
  • A flawless scoring system
  • A fully destructible environment
  • An invisible off-screen lava lamp

And…

  • A battle that never stops, the game ends when you want it to end… or when you want to give up

Our goal here was to create a competitive game that can bring fun at the start, but slowly destroys friendship as it goes on. We tried to recreate the feeling that games like Mario Kart brought us : « It’s fun to play together… but that blue shell was bullshit! »

We really hope you will enjoy Unstoppable Battle of the Neon Arena

I had fun playing! A neat visual style and the movement feels good. One thing I'd recommend is changing the attach button to anything else but Shift. On Windows, if you press the Shift key several times in a row, a dialogue pops up asking if you want to turn sticky keys on (for accessibility). X would maybe be OK? I don't think it's position moves on international keyboards...

It's a fun game, I really like the movement and feeling of the controls. It's really good. The sounds and visual are very appealing to me. The only problem, not with the game per se, but I don't see the theme in it. Maybe I'm missing something?

Good game! Got some 80s vibes from the menu and instruction screens, the game felt good and was fun but the controls were too heavy. Turning around and jumping precisely was really hard. Other than that, well done :D

@sfbtom glad you had fun playing our game.
Regardind the attack buton you can use the A key or the shift key.
We should had put the A key on the mapping screen but I guess we failed on that one ^^

@rmc thanks for your feedback.
At first we wanted to make an online game with 20 or more players. Where the more players there is and the longer you stay alive the worse the arena gets. Sadly we had trouble setting up a server and we scalled down to a local game with four players.
We still see our game being in the theme with the fact that the better you are with a weapon, the faster you will kill you friends and the faster you will lose it.
But we are not as much as we wanted to be in the theme yes.

@Syrapt0r That exactly what we were looking for :)
It's true that contros can feel heavy, but we wanted to create a game in witch you can fling yourself in the face of you oponent. A little rework could be done especially for the keyboard.

Visual design is interresting, graphics are nice, music is also. The idea is not new. I don't really see the connection with the LD40 theme. Anyway, the game is fun to play and that's rare. Good job with that. About fun, I have just been a little bit frustrated not to be able to collect weapons and choose one.

@MoseGames As we weren't able to set up the server in time, we scalled down the game to a local multiplayer game. You need to be 2 to 4 in front of the same screen to play it.

@pareidolia Thanks for your feedback. It's true that a little rework and better explanatiosn could be used for the controls

@gaming-night Glad you liked our game. Making a fun game was our top priority. Regarding the weapons, by forcing you to swap to your victim's weapon, we make sure that the better you are with a weapon, the faster you will kill you friends and the faster you will lose it. We are not as much as we wanted in the theme but we had to rescop mid project from an online game to a local game.

Nice job with your entry. I find the controls a little bit to floaty and slippery for my taste, but this is a superb job. Congratulations.

I also didn't get the controls, shooting seems random. But I liked the game anyway!

Friend and I enjoyed your game! Controls, as other have said, could be tuned up a little, both controller and keyboard, we think. The environment blocks coming in and out all the time at random seemed entirely random to the point of being almost irritating. Maybe if there were patterns or some other slick presentation for their coming and going? Shooting/slashing/etc seemed to not always be under my precise control, either. That said, great effort, nice game. :) Congrats and have a great LD!

A good game here =). The music is just a little bit annoying after a while. Good job!

I really liked the concept but unfortunelly I had no friend to play with, so I tested the mechanics and they felt like a glove. Good entry.

The mechanics of this game felt very good, animations and graphic style are very nice.
Unfortunately no one was around to play with me :(

Really well done even though the controls are a little bit too weird - maybe too smooth like Holiday-On-Ice :)
I love the main aesthetic especially drawings in the background. Well done!
Un bon petit jeu qui mérite une bonne note ++
