Gain Quest: The Art of Muscle by Devastus
Time to hit the gym and become a better version of yourself! In 7 days!
This is our third Ludum Dare entry, an arcadey button masher minigame about trying to reach the top of the food chain before your power runs out. Or life.
There's alot that was left missing from the game, alot of plain mistakes left unfixed, but I'm pretty happy in what we got done in the time given. I might update it with some extra features later on as a Post-Jam version.
NOTICE: WebGL is the Post-Jam version and will receive future updates. Standalone will remain as the Submit Day version.
Controls:
- Arrow keys: move character
- X/Enter: Accept menu choice
- X: Interact, Minigame Action 1
- Z/Y: Set weights, Minigame Action 2 (QWERTY/QWERTZ)
Tips:
- Setting weights is crucial for you to succeed in your task.
- You can buy stuff from vending machines that help you on your journey with WOW points that you accumulate with succesful training routines.
- Håkan likes fishing on a hot summer's eve.
Updates (available on the HTML5(web)/WebGL version):
- 06.08.2017 - Setting weights is now done globally for all training devices, reduced difficulty and made it scaling
- 02.08.2017 - The cinematics can now be skipped with X/Enter! Finally there is hope after all.
- 01.08.2017 - Added Leaderboards!

This is the best game I've played so far. Well done, keep it up.
My only issue would be the re-spawning. If you make it to day 4 or 5 and die, you will be taken back to the start into a cutscene (which is cool!) but you can't skip it. Adding a skip option or a quick recovery would be a neat investment.
Overall, I did spend quite a bit of time with this one, it was a lot of fun! Thanks for putting it together!! :)
Overall it looked very polished. I liked the zooming effect when you are progressing in a minigame.
It was a bit too hard, but fun to play. The whole game feels so polished, it's a great accomplishment for a jam game.
There's some content features left out of the submission that I might add later into the WebGL version, such as status effects, populating the gym with interactable people and of course the ending cinematic songs (there is only solemn silence for your efforts for now).
There's some balancing issues I need to solve with the minigames, and certainly a tutorial in some way could be added (although I kinda like how you have to learn the ropes by yourself), but the first thing it definitely needs the skip button, that's for sure. I'll work on those a bit so that I can hopefully start seeing some highscores in the leaderboards!
This is probably the funniest game I have ever played on a LD event! I loved the game! It's perfect in every single way in my opinion. You are getting a full score from me!
Thank you for making this game I enjoyed it a lot!
Maybe your browser had too low memory to load it? I'm expecting that I put in safe amounts of memory reservation since it runs on all the computers I've tested it with. I can see whether I could lower the amount somewhat, though I can't hold any promises to being able to do so (Unity itself takes a hefty chunk if I understand right).
This might mean I'll have to create a Standalone version of the updated one in the future though.
PS: I fixed the itch.io profile, it should work now!
Loved the humor and overall style.
The only problem that I have is that you are using X and Z for controls. I have a European keyboard, so Z and Y are switched, making the minigames much more difficult - and they felt quite hard to begin with. Still had a bunch of fun though!
A really solid entry!
I really liked the interpretation of the theme.
The game has incredible arts, incredible audio, very fluid mechanics. Can I give less than 5 stars? Absolutely not. :P
Well done!
I'm not sure if I just missed it, but if I didn't, it would've been nice to know the end goal before starting and not just at the end, because I wasn't really quite sure what I was doing, goal-wise, the whole time.
The humour is great and the music and voice clips really make the game. Amusing little jabs at the beach jock! The minigames are good; I was never good at button mashing, but this is the kind that I can pull off. My failure was probably due to not really getting how all the stats worked out. I also never seemed to have enough money to buy those pills, heh.
Overall it's very polished. Nice graphics and audio, lots of effects and game feel to it. And an intro and outro to boot! Great job!
P.S. Bug-ish? At least in the web version, movement works with WASD or arrows, but browsing the vending machine seems to only work with arrows, which was confusing, since I was playing with WASD.
Just to point this out, the game kinda expects you to **increase your weights as you get stronger**, to get even stronger quicker (succesfully lift bigger weights = more strength experience). This in turn makes the minigames harder again, or the same if you stay within your strength numbers.
The game certainly doesn't really explain this, so I apologize for any uninformed bad endings :P.
@ava-skoog Nice catch! That is indeed a bug, I need to fix that ASAP. And yeah, maybe I need to give some indication on what the expected strength value to succeed actually is in-game.
