A World in a Shoebox... by Articulated9
CONTROLS:
Keyboard: - Arrow Keys to move - Z to dash/interact with signs/NPCs - X to attack
XBOX 360 Controller: - Left stick to move - A to dash/interact with signs/NPCs - X to attack

My second Ludum Dare, and this one turned out much like the first - a broken piece of shit! Oh well, let's do a dissection:
I was aiming for a little RPG in gamemaker, Link to the Past-style. It was going to have a neat little story and everything. About a world in a shoebox. Then I ran out of time and I still hadn't figured out why my signposts were working properly in some rooms and not others. Ah, what could've been…
The fact that anything is being uploaded at all is an absolute miracle. Big thanks to HeartBeast for his tutorial series - they got me from zero to here, which is progress!
Outstanding bugs/issues:
The text in some signs appears above the dialogue box object. I think it's something to do with my display_scale variable but I don't have the gas to figure it out!
Sometimes crashes when attacking an enemy. Not sure what causes this but is probably related to obj_damage.
No 'Game Over' screen. I JUST RAN OUT OF TIME OK.
Controller support is implemented but not tested so...y'know...play at your own risk.
No sounds. Again, timings!
Ah well, I had a lot of fun and learned a bunch about coding in GameMaker. Next time - BETTER SCOPING!

It was charming, I didn't die but man I almost did a few times. I almost wrote a whole thing saying about how I couldn't move and it was bugged but then I realized my gamepad was plugged in so I played it on that (it worked fine by the way, no crashes or anything). I cleared the world, talked to Reg and the other guy (bert? burt? I forgot sorry!) and checked out the haunted house too!
Nice work on all of it, you captured the link to the past feel for sure.
Also, WOW, I have a hard time fighting all the baddies!
Thanks!
E: I did crash when killing one of the monsters up north (Planet Dash I believe)
• It's hard to hit enemies when they come toward you diagonally.
• The game doesn't have any help for the controls at first(?) That is at least what I experienced. I had to figure out what key could activate the signs and took some time.
• As you said: the game sometimes crashes when killed by enemy.
• I could walk over some sprites (such as tree leaves, maybe it was intentional?)
Aside of those things I can say that this game is pretty nicely done. If I hadn't died so many times I maybe could have written a little bit more detailed review. Anyways well done.
The sound is really crucial for this kind of game. It's a shame you didn't had time (can you imagine a Zelda game without music?).
The world is interesting, I like the hero (what is it by the way?), and the dash has a really good feel. I would definitely look into your next games and see your progress in the game making universe.
lol the characters look cool, and you can shove things around, that's amusing.
notes:
- It's pointless to tell the player to use the arrows to walk, on a sign he has to walk to, maybe put some hovering text next time?
or just give the controlls in the text of the post.
- The character can walk on the walls of the room
- I can do without the game over screen, but if you die you have to close the game and start it again
I like the dash effect, nice work!
Damn those grey monsters are hard XD the boots help so I think maybe you should have let the player find them first.
I think I killed every monster and explored all the map, even the scary house lol
Can't wait for steam greenlight!
Thanks for trying anyway!
