Life is precious by freso

Theme - Your life is currency
Use your lives as currency in the shop.
Gameplay
You start the game with 9 lives, like the cat you are, but a person. When you die, you may sacrifice some of your lives to be blessed with better weapons. Beware, the game ends when you have no more lives! Shoot crates for powerups and barrels for a helpful explosion. Complete the game by clearing all enemy nests. White trackers in screen corners. HA, fooled ya! You must now also kill the boss!
Controls
- Control player: WASD + mouse (scroll wheel temporarily zooms out)
- Switch between bought weapons: 1-4

This kind of game is hard to master, obviously, so here is a link for you if you want to go further (by the guy who did Nuclear Throne) :)

I'll give a cookie to anyone who can win the game with the basic gun, without cheating. =)
It's also not clear that there's any point in buying the weaker guns, or more than one gun, other than the challenge. Since ammo appears to be infinite, and tehre's no mechanic for gaining new lives, it's basically a one-time "which gun do I buy" decision. This makes it feel less interesting as a decision.
The camera is super nauseating. I'd probably anchor it to the player, or add a TON of lerp to make it less shakey.
Better unit AI and variety might spice things up a bit, but still pretty fun overall though.
You should gave me bow or knife for beggining.
Game was very engaging!
Also some mechanics to regain lives will be cool, because after buying a weapon there is no point in buying another one. You just lose life and nothing else really
- The player's collision works nice against angled walls and the like. Good job on that!
- The weapon sprites look really well!
- The music is sweet.
- The camera moves too fast... It's instant, actually. I'd suggest adding some linear interpolation as the others have suggested.
- The gunshots in some weapons (especially the shotgun) are too loud.
The gameplay is fun. However, the idea based around the theme is the obvious one to go for. One of the first ideas that pops into everyones head when they see "your life is currency" is buy items with health, but this is just frustrating. Goal 1 in every game should be to save life.
Anyway, thanks for making this, it was still quite fun to play :D. Hope to see you next Ludum Dare!
Good job :D What's I felt was kinda missing was some kind of indicator where to go or what to do next, I didn't know if I had to kill every enemy or if they just respawn and I need to get to the boss ASAP?
The bombs were very satisfying!
Moving the camera with the mouse became a bit disorienting, like suggested above this could be fixed by slowing it down or giving it some offset value so it's not precisely locked to the mouse position, giving it a bit of room to move the mouse before actually moving the cam.
Good job!
The camera was quite tough to work with for me since it moved around so erratically with my aim. A smoother blend would have been cool, I think.
Took me a few tries to figure out a good strategy. Mine was to buy the sniper rifle and collect as many time stops as possible to stop the enemies from swarming at the end (they still did, but it was manageable). It turned into a bullet hell near the end, very intense. Loved the hype gameplay you crafted, as the capslock opening probably gave away, definitely had me sweating, great job!
theme-wise i think you interpreted it a lot better than most, and i like the risk/reward balance.
the barrels exploding bullets into all directions seems like a clever way to quickly implement area damage. it works well here, but if you continue working on this later i might suggest a different effect (and probably player damage, too).
Only major flaw I saw was that there was no player feedback when the next was being damaged, but I'm sure that was just a time restraint thing.
Good job!
The game might be a little hard. We didn't have time to polish and balance it enough and therefore, we left in a little cheat code, for you. :)
To immediately wipe out all nests and get to the boss fight, press k!
The boss fight itself is almost another game. New music and hard boss!
