Hyper Skater by neowhoru

[raw]
made by neowhoru for LD 43 (JAM)

Hyper Skater is a Platformer about a guy on a skateboard who rescues his friends.

To rescue his friends he must sacrifice energy from himself. But be careful: if the rescue cost too much energy you die.

The good news: there are collectables to refill part of your energy.

Controls: - AD OR < > to move left and right - Space to Jump

GamePlay: - Just touch your odd friend so that he gets the energy - Collectables can give you new energy

3 Levels are currently playable in this Jam Version! Have fun with the game.

I might have played too much Super Metroid before, because I actually liked the wall jumping here. Even managed to break the game with it. Still a good unreleased NES game.

Very cool game! The pixel art is spot on, and so is the music. The controls are a bit wonky, but with a little more polish this game is awesome. Good job!

Amazing game, from graphics to sfx to music. The only thing i can say is the platformer motor you are using seems to have some bugs. Especially about walls. You should use no friction physics materials

![bug.gif](///raw/ca2/7/z/1d2ae.gif)

And it was a little hard for me, give up after 12 tries in the second level

Get stuck into a and have to release keys to fall and die is a bit annoying.
BUT like the game the control are very cool, I like this small inertia.
And the art are great too. Nice job ;)

The skater jumps. So satisfying.

The game felt very nice and the music is nice to. However there is a bug where if you jump of a wall twice you get stuck in a endless fall animation, which means that you can't finish the level.

Ahaha stunning pixel art loved it! Only jump could be more faster and realistic that's what I felt. Good Job!

Nice game. I liked the physic of the skater. I would have like to see more platformer elements like moving platforms. The music was a bit annoying. Had fun playing it. Good work overall!

I liked it, the art was nice and I liked the platform style.
There was a bug that I got when wall jumping where it wouldn't reset to the 'grounded' state sometimes.
Good job, I would love to see a more fleshed out version.

Yep you can Super Metroid wall jump all right. Pretty fun mechanic but it isn't used for anything here.

So this is a simple platformer and it was fun. Definitely that high browser game drop in and play and end up playing longer than you thought you would quality. I wonder if that wall jump could be used for something if there were more levels. Hmm. I think there would have to be some more mechanics if it was to continue for sure. Even more complicated platform arrangements, or some of them moving, wouldn't be enough after a few more levels. The other possibility was already explored on the third level and I liked that! You have to work out the correct order to collect the energy refills between saving your friends. You can't just mindless truck through it all in a linear order. That was a cool twist for something in a game jam and showed you were thinking of how the system could be effectively explored.

@thisismyjam thank you - yeah that wall jump is more unexpected issue but i should solve this in a post-jam version :)

The Idea with Level 3 came within i made level 3 i thought "wait wouldn't it be cool if you must take care of the order and to challenging it a bit?" :)

From the name and the screenshots I got an idea about at least 50% of the game and the rest was self-explanatory/well-explained in-game + no tutorial was needed = very good game design. I didn't read a single word on your game's homepage.

I found the screenshots very appealing (made me want to play the game). I think it is because of great pixel art and color scheme. When you described the game as "retro skate-platformer" in a post - I was thinking something fast along the line of Sonic... But it is a very good precision platformer instead.

I fealt like some of the beverages were intentionally placed to kill you. If this is true, bear in mind that if you expand on this game, i would try not to do too much of this. You can perhaps expand it to create levels, which involve more strategy and thinking, thus making it more interesting to play.

Thank you for your wonderful review @mza :) Of course i think about to expand it (as i really like it too this time - the last two times in LD i didn't do it well but the Dezember LDs are my best:))

What i am not sure if the level settings - i had some idea about subways for example and another different city levels but still not a real idea about it.
For a full game it shoulnd't be too short but interesting :)

This game is amazing, I especially love that scrolling city block effect. music is good, art is good. Game mechanics fits the theme. No complaints. I just had a little bug when hitting a wall my player could no longer jump and I had to suicide. Over all very good game.

Other than the bug where you get stuck in falling mode after you've landed and can't jump anymore, it was pretty fun. I was able to get out of that by finding a corner.

I liked the wall jump mechanics a lot. I also think that when you jump you shouldn't just follow the camera so completely - I could never see below me to know if I would land on a platform or not. Oftentimes games with huge jumps only half-follow the character through the jump so you can still see below you.

Thank you @aurel and @digitaldude555 for your Feedback. I really think i will Make a full game out of it.

@aurel you are right with the camera which needs a little mit more improvement - so this will be improved.

I like the art and music, and the way the skater controlled was also nice and fluid. The concept sacrificing your health for saving friends was however a bit weak if you don't need your health for anything else like fighting enemies or something like that. Nice idea but adding something so your health matters more , aside for just taking care to take health packs after and not before saving friends, would make it a lot better mechanic.

Yo' I would add a variable-height jump, the player doesn't have enough control over where his character will be. Otherwise Great Game Bro!
