Beat Quest by XCVZXC

[raw]
made by XCVZXC for LD 41 (COMPO)

This is my first LD, and actually first game I finished. I created rhythmic arcade game with elements of action RPG. Beat Quest is a game about fighting to the beat. Music is generated in real time using samples. Check this out on my gj, links below :) screenshot2-sheet.png

Oh man, that quickly ramps up. I keep getting tripped up by the combination up & down moments haha. Nice audio work!

My high score is 19204 after 3 tries :)

It is always challenging to make rythm games, all the more in 2 days!
Overall, the game succeeds in delivering a nice experience.

The songs are quite repetitive but the ability to unlock new ones makes up for it.
At some points, when it gets really fast, it would be nice to have a dezoom to be able to anticipate more then rely on reflex.

Graphics are nice, and there has been some work on the interface.
Well done.

That was really fun and also really hard. I am not very good at it :D, my best score was 7249. I like that you can unlock new tracks.

Really nice audio work, there is a slight "hiccup" after each note, but really enjoyable. Nice job and definitely a novel way to manage combat in an RPG ! :)

Great job! Looks good, plays well and is hard to beat. Definitely a new take on rhythm RPG.

10k top score, Yay! Really cool idea. If you added some more content and RPG elements I could see myself putting many hours into it.

As a music noob I loved what you did with just few simple sounds.

Later in the game when arrows start to move fast they jump a lot with each frame. I'm not sure if it's because of framerate or if it could be smoothed so that they don't "teleport" so much.

Great game! Cheers!

@ryzy27 It can be fault of framerate (its only 30) Thanks for feedback everyone!

Fun concept, maybe the two genres are not here :/ The music is too simple for a rythmic game maybe.

The game flows really well and I like how the combat is fully managed through the rhythm game section. The sprites have a lot of character and give the game a fun atmosphere too :)

I liked it, to bad i had to focus to much on the "beat" to really see the attacks or artwork. The music got a bit repetitive quickly though. But great entry

I fell in love with the "UGHH" when you get hit :D Sometimes I just didn't press the arrows in purpose 'cause the sfx just fitted the music so well! Overall pretty enjoyable!

@Kultisti Hahaha i actually recorded this sound one hour before submitting my game (it's my own voice), because something was lacking when you got hit. Thanks for your opinion haha

Great job dude!

Hilarious that we had the same idea. Nothing compared to people that chose to have a farming aspect in their genre mix up. Oh boy is there a lot of those.
