LudumsWitch by Tommy

[raw]
made by Tommy for LD 39 (JAM)

Keeping alive an event like Ludum Dare is a difficult task.

There are jams every year and thousands of users. A lot of energy is required to keep Ludum Dare working and you don't want her to run out of it, do you? For this reason, she recruited you to get the souls of your fellow programmers, artists and designers which she feeds on.

That's right, you have to slay your way through the Ludum Dare community.

You impersonate a great, bearded and four-eyed man which must kill the goblins (which are the impersonations of your fellows, interesting choice) so that Ludum Dare can get the souls she needs. Ludum Dare is impersonated by a beautiful and hard-to-get witch, that helps you with a magic shield. However, keeping the shield activated consumes souls, so you may want to gather them fast. Beware, staying outside of the shield will lower your health because of the toxicity of the dungeon (goblins pollute their environment too). Goblins can't go through the shield, so you may want to fight them from inside of it and to go outside just to explorate the dungeon. Throughout the dungeon, you may find some ruins which have powerups for you. You can take them by dragging and dropping them on the two slots in the lower part of the screen. Be careful with powerups, since they consume souls each time you activate them. The witch will stay still unless you tell her to follow you.

Controls: - WASD: player movement; - left mouse button click: player attack; - Q and E: activation of powerups, if taken; - SPACE: witch follows you; - ESC: pause the game.

Good choice of font, there! Can you believe you went with the same hex grid floor that I used in my game?

I think this game really has a good twist on the theme.

I liked this game because it was fun and I understood what I had to do instantly. The only thing I would change is the fake volume sliders in the options menu.

The machanic with the shield is pretty interessting and innovational, I belive if you work on it you can make quite something out of it.

This was a fun game, and I enjoyed the theme of it. The music and graphics were good, and I liked the various names given to the goblins.

I noticed sometimes the character would get stuck attacking with his sword, even though I had stopped pressing the button. Apart from that I didn't notice any major bugs.

The game play was a bit repetitive, maybe more varied enemy types would have made it more enjoyable.

Overall, it's a good entry!

Neat little hack and slash although the witch seemed a bit to happy to eat my soul :P. Is there a win condition? Beyond venturing out to get the powerups I didn't see much point to move anywhere. Music was great but the constant monster sounds even when no monster was near got a bit annoying.

Nice idea, but it could really use some more power ups, and an actuall winning end.

The graphics were awsome, the music was more than good, and the idea was great!

You should remove the infinite world generation, and just teleport the player on the opposite side of the map instead. Also, more enemies would be nice, if they would do less damage to the shield.

Also, if the witch takes enough damage, she just insta kills you. Is this intentional? If not, it's still funny!

I was expecting something better by a game made by 5 people, but good work nonetheless!

The graphics are pretty nice, but I felt like this could have progressed a bit quicker - it felt like there was a lot of time when nothing was happening.

I like that the shield pushes enemies away after you recharge it - very cool feature, but it took me a long time to actually reach that point. Cool game/concept overall - let's keep Ludum Dare going!

The shield is extremely helpful, and it is nice to be able to push the goblins back even after you lose it the first time. The graphics are pretty cool, and the 'die' sounds are interesting. I don't know whether it is me saying that or the goblins though...

Anyway, cool game, but faster spawn rates might be helpful. Sitting there waiting for enemies gets a little boring after a while.

Cool concepts here...the gameplay is pretty unique, with the witch following and covering you with the shield. Using just melee it's a bit too straightforward, but I definitely see the potential once you toss the spells in. The spells are a bit hard to hunt down at first and you run around w/o direction for a while. Some kind of radar or compass may have helped catch nearby objects.

The game's look stands out nicely. It seems raw at first but it actually all meshes together pretty nicely... font, sprites, UI, background. Also, did you write something to pull from the LD name database to grab all the monster names? Great touch on that one.

I like the twist there at the end when her shield goes down and the game gets a lot more frantic. I did experience a bug there though where the player character seemingly ran off like a coward, which was actually quite funny.

Nice concept, to be responsible for two characters, each with a different function in the game. Witch and her animation are hot. Wish I could pick up powerups, is that a bug or I'm missing something?

The concept here is pretty awesome and so is the music (Meow! Die!), the graphics are also really good as well as the general style of the characters. The enemies spawn a little slowly but apart from that the game is an excellent entry.

I Recently played your game during a live stream at your request.

[here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sEKsM8vugRs) .

I really liked the art on your game. I also liked how Ludum Dare sucks the life out of you when you die, kinda like real life lol. I did have a problem picking up the power ups. Using windows 10 and chrome. I had fun playing awesome entry.

if you haven't already please give my game a try [Zombie Power Station](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/39/zombie-power-station) HTML5 Thanks

@peachtreeoath: the names come all from the ldjam database, I've kinda hacked toghether a js script to fetch them.

@codechomper: thank you very much for the video! I've seen your games' page and I'll try it as soon as I get my pc. Also, from the video it seems you clicked on the powerups instead of dragging them, maybe it's just that.

Great game overall.

There were too few enemies so it was hard to preserve the circle. Also I could use power ups only once.

With the WebGL version, I had a glitch with the knight wielding the sword repeatedly without me clicking. This prevented movement and made me fail within seconds. Other than that, solid game. Good job.
