Spare Parts by Nanda

[raw]
made by Nanda for LD 43 (JAM)

You owe a lot of money to a shady space pirate. Pay him back by destroying other ships and stealing their money. You have 3 minutes to pay off your current payment, if you haven't collected enough money by then, you need to SACRIFICE your ship components to get the money you need. Those can also be lost in combat and also gained when left intact after you destroy an enemy. If you lose a component you can buy a bad emergency component to keep going. I had no time for Audio sorry about that.

The game is lacking a lot of content, especially because there aren't enough different components, but I had a lot of fun so I might continue the project.

Bug Reports are appreciated I had literally no time to test the finished version.

That was pretty fun! I downloaded the wrong file at first, I thought V1.0 was a post-jam update and the LD43 download was the jam release, not the source code. I'm not sure if the background is supposed to look flickery while moving & sometimes it seems like items disappear from view if you're too far away from them, but I'm not sure.

I will comment that the controls feel like I'm wading through molasses and sliding on ice at the same time. It's very difficult to get where I want to go and I had to do a lot of fly-by parts installation. It's also difficult to find any credits at all - I found about 3 enemies in the first month, and only one had any coin. Actually, two of the enemies found me, then I struggled to find another one or two. So it's difficult to actually do anything. I had to end on month 2 because I sold my main thruster and couldn't move anymore. Being able to go into negative bank account dollars that makes your debt worse mid-level might help with that - buying emergency parts with money you don't have so you can still play, or otherwise having some way of getting out of that situation.

I still had fun though, even if it was difficult. I quite liked chasing the enemies down after they'd perform fly-by shootings like the cowards they were - come back here and face me like a space pirate! It seemed like the enemies definitely had better control over their ships than I did though, so this captain has a bit of ship envy going on.

Good job!

@papabirb Thanks a lot for the detailed feedback! Yeah you probably start off too underpowered. You were supposed to get better and better parts from the enemies so i wanted to start your control over the ship pretty low, but since i only have one set of components you can actually gain from the enemies right now and they are kinda strong atm that kinda backfired. The enemies actually all drop credits but they accidentaly get rendered behind the planets. So if anyone else is struggling with that you can usually get them by flying around the area the enemy died in.

This has the premise to be a great game. Though, combat isn't as satisfying as I feel it could be because of the wicked drifting to stay on target. Other than that and the whole "unfinished" thing, great job!

@djn Thanks! I had so much fun working on it that I will likely keep going. Yeah maybe an actual mouse aim for the gun would help?

A great game but a bit clunky. With some improved art and more polish it could be awesome!

I like the idea of selling of the parts to pay off the dept.
I may not have got it what I need to do, but it was hard to find other ships to combat or to find some other way to earn money. Having more encounters would spice up the gameplay a bit.
Also, I loved the graphics, and the whole retro feel. Really nice game!

@flcx Thank you! Raiding ships is the only other way to gain money yeah, but yeah the spawn rate really is too low.

One of the funniest games I've played in this Ludum. I love the mechanic of losing body parts and the need to fix them while they shoot you.
Very funny, I have not found any error and although I have not lasted long, I had a great time, good work :)

@blackwen Thank you so much! I will likely continue working on this game though I'll probably be busy with other stuff the next few weeks. If you wanna see where it goes you can follow me on instagram (@nanda_gamedev), just throwing it out there :)

The theme integration is fantastic! I think the game really turned out well. I could see this getting fleshed out into something really cool

So fun when I realized I had to sell ship components to pay my debt! Good game!

Man, I would really like to try out this game, but I'm not on Windows. Do you have a WebGL version?

@mertios Sorry, I don't, but I might take the time to make one on the weekend. If I do and you still wanna try it I'll tag you on here again.

@nanda Ok, thanks so much! If you were using Unity, making a WebGL build should be too hard. Good luck!

Very nice little game, for some reason I didn’t have music on Windows? I liked the gameplay itself and the idea) But the background was very inconvenient for me, I think it would be dangerous for people with epilepsy. It is also very inconvenient to pick up small wrecks of ships. In general, this is a very worthy project!)

@syrok Thank you! I didn't have time for music so thats not a problem with the version :/

Nice concept, very fitting for the theme.
It was frustrating at first, until I understood I still could fight by ramming into other ships.

On my first run, I had my thruster destroyed by the first enemy and couldn't do anything from this point.
Second try I could find and loot three enemies, but was forced to sell some parts anyway, and was afraid to lose anything (weapon and thrusters are really too important). I sold them anyway to try, and had fun ramming into enemies to destroy them, repair myself and get my parts back. Unfortunately it got me killed^^

I believe the most important thing missing in the game would be a radar, or anything pointing towards enemies. Also, having a bigger radius for picking up stuff, maybe centered on the ship instead of in front of you could help.

I had fun testing the game anyway, nice job o/

Nice artstyle. Though I admit I was a bit disappointed by the lack of audio in v1.0 of your game. Overall, its pretty relaxing.
Btw, are you using procedural generation ?

@najmm Yeah I wish I had time for the music. I am not though, there are 5 planets in the map and it just loops around when you go too far out. The enemies always spawn at a random planet and travel between them.
