Funhouse Blackout by AndideBob

[raw]
made by AndideBob for LD 39 (JAM)

A simple Funhouse. The rules are easy, find the Key, then find the Exit. But what happens when the Power goes out? Well, you are left alone with a Hopsie the Clown and your phone of course. screenshot01.png

Goal

The goal of Funhouse Blackout is to escape. To do that you have to find a key that is hidden somewhere in the maze, which is the funhouse. After you found the key you then have to find the door and voila you are free. Sure this would be an easy task, if it were not for the total darkness, thanks to the blackout. Now you have to navigate the maze just using your phone to tell you where you are facing and to mark doorways on it. You can also use the phone to snap a picture, which lights up whatever is in front of you. But you have to watch out! Your battery is draining with every move you make. screenshot02.png

Controls

  • W to move forward (You will hear your steps if you moved)
  • A+D to turn left or right
  • ENTER to take a picture (If you take a picture of the key, you automatically pick it up. To finish the game you need to take a picture of the door while having the key.)
  • Hold E to look at the last picture you took
  • ARROW-KEYS to mark doorways on your map

Note

The map stays the same, since I didn't have time to put in randomization. Also there might be non-predictable deaths because the enemy doen't signal properly when he is around the corner.

Have fun!

EDIT: Changed to download to a gamejolt-Page. Didn't have the time to do that before.

Nice work, the game is well made. I don't particularly like horror games, but it's fine for LD. The energy levels are a bit too closely balanced for my taste, though. Take a picture or two too many and you need to restart again. Maybe we could keep the map between saves?

Overall solid entry!

Whoever voice acted this is not welcome anywhere around me!
I loved the audio, the first time I died the horn squeaking killed me, I did not want to hear more, dropped my headphones and all. The jumpscare was a bit unnecessary, the audio did a better job of scaring me.
Even though it was scary you managed to fit some humor into it!
Questions:
Is the mapLayout the same every time I play? Im guessing to win I will need to memories the roots to the key and the door? Because there is no way I can find them both in on try just looking around. It took me 4 tries before I even found the door, the key is still missing.
On some attemps I was not sure why i was killed, had had plenty of pattery, are the some rooms that are instant death?
Overall nice work! Also f*** f8

@Spice135 Thank you :)
@eott Thank you for the input:D
@landberglife So i guess we're never going to meet up! Glad that you like my voice acting :) F8 was my idea so you're welcome! The map is always the same btw! Also no instant-death rooms, but the clown might enter the same room as you go to sometimes.

Neat little game. I agree with @landberglife and @eott that the tuning is a little tight. Some more battery would have made it a bit more enjoyable (as you could do a little more in one run). However, since you have the same map every time, it does get a little better because you can just memorize the map/draw it out by hand as you go. If the goal was to have a game that would be completed in multiple sessions when you memorized/drew the map, then the tuning is actually probably okay. I really enjoyed myself with this one and am planning on going back to it when I have a pen/paper on hand and any game that makes me want to go back is a good one in a jam.

I love this idea. I'm a huge fan of horror games and it's good to see other horror entries. The concept is really interesting and creepy, and I loved having to keep track of the map. The positional sound was on point to, and added a lot to the horror with headphones on. Amazing game!!!

@AFlatTHrasher Thank you so much for the feedback. Yea, it's pretty tight but the game is fast paced enough to have several runs. There's also enough voicelines to have some variation each time :)

@conno-hagan I'm also a big fan of horror, and i agree, best played with headphones so you can actually feel the breathing in your neck. :D

I am not good for this kind of games but I had a nice time playing it.

Awesome game .. love the sound and the mood. The voice lines behind the game are really scarry.

very hard to complete it though :P I had to draw the entire map to find the location of the key and the exit door:

BUG report: Most of the times I took a picture of the key I didnt get it. (Spent around 2 hours taking pictures of the wall with the key until it finally appeared on the smartphone)

Awesome job!

@mordokay Glad you enjoyed it so much you actually attempted to beat it! I am sorry about the key thing, it didn't happen during the little testing we did, and I just tried it 3 times and I also didn't have any problems. I will keep looking into it though. Anyways, thank you so much!

@everyone I really like all the good feedback, we had a blast making the game and I bet I also speak for @chron when I say that it makes it so much more awesome to see that other people are enjoying it as well! So thank you all!

The audio design is really impressive! The atmosphere coupled with the haunting clown face really is terrifying. I was a bit confused by the mechanics at first, but once I understood them the game instantly became engaging and fun. Great work!

Neat concept! I included it in my Ludum Dare 39 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LqYPjUYhuXo
