Planet 43 by MyFriendTames

[raw]
made by MyFriendTames for LD 43 (COMPO)

Introduction

You are in charge of planet 43, a particular planet. You must manage to maintain the balance of life. You must make food (plants) for the ludums (interesting kind of life). Each 10 seconds, each ludum consumes 10 times its existence of the life of the planet. When a ludum eats, a new ludum is born and give you the ludums count expressed in life points. When you plant, you consume a point in the life of the planet. When you kill a ludum, you consume a point in the life of the planet.

Author's note: I made this game as my first entry for the Ludum Dare. The experience was very exciting and tired, obviously ... I'm just an amateur video game developer who wants to turn it into a real work. I love this, really! Thank you very much, Mike, for the Ludum Dare.

Sorry for my english, I'm just learning...

The animations, ui, and artwork are fantastic. I found trying to maintain a balance very fun and challenging, and I love how you implemented the theme of "sacrifices must be made". The only thing I ask is that you implement the ability to review the rules, as I found myself trying to remember how exactly the mechanics worked. I have to ask, were you inspired by BlackThornProd's Evolution game from Ludum Dare 42, if so, that's awesome. Great work on the game!

@jackson-makes-games your comment is fantastic: smile:, it makes me happy, thank you very much! And, yeah, the things you saw are true
* When the time was running out, the only thing I had the chance to do was an initial screen (very ugly :cold_sweat: ) with the instructions...
* A few days ago, when I was training for the event, I saw the game of BlackThornProd’s, *Evolution* and I loved the idea and the graphics. It's just a beautiful game! It gave me some ideas to make my first entry, not directly, but unconsciously.

Took a few tries to get used to the flow of the game. Got a score of 12000+ before it felt repetitive. Would have loved to see more progression. Really cute game, though.

@jequed thanks, the game would be more elaborated, but I could not do everything I wanted because the time was running out.

Good job! But isn't it too easy when you mindlessly plant many times per second?

@suchista Yeah, I know  that's because I couldn't finish all the game features. I really want to take this game and rebuild it as a complete game :muscle: this is just a prototype.

Very entertaining! The graphics are cute and expressive and the game handles very well. A few sound effects and some balancing would make this game really shine but we're all familiar with time crunch. Nice work!

It was very cute! I found the graphics very simple, yet I was impressed with the way they were executed (the smooth bouncing of the ludums, the expressive planet). There was one thing that I didn't fully understand with the gameplay, but that was because I couldn't go back to the rules after playing. Great job!!

Seems like you had a way to go with the game. Some nifty ideas but you probably want to flesh them out more. Frantic clicking was tiring. Good start though.

I think the rules could be slightly altered to make the game much more interesting. You would be punished more for having too many ludums if you made the cost of the ludums n^2 where n = # of ludums on the planet.

I like the faces the planet makes btw.

Hmm, F-secure reported the game as potential malware, with the ID:
Suspicious:W32/Malware!DeepGuard
I'm pretty sure this is a false positive but wanted to report it before playing in any case. I recommend running the game through https://www.virustotal.com/ to be sure :)

HEY! I'm glad to see new people participating! The ludums are so cute! I had a good time playing this game. I managed to make it crash due to having too many ludums.

Congrats on completing your first Ludum Dare! Welcome to the addiction.

The facial expressions of the planet are great. It really helps in determining the state of the planet. I appreciate the clever use of "Ludum" as the name of the creatures. I think some simple background music and sound effects would've gone a long way to enhancing the experience. What you have here is good though, so be proud of your work!

05. Dec 2018 · 13:51 UTC
@dudum-lare thank you very much!

The crash is probably because, trying to finish at time, I used arrays to storage ludums, but if I make new version, I will use a linked list and try to implement a method to preserve memory. :v:

Your game is too easy 😪 if you click to the mouse buttons quickly.
Even so you have worked hard on programming it in C++ and everything 💪.
I think you already know what can be improved 😉, I just agree with the comments.

I stopped playing for some minutes and I have 20000 of love when I commented this, next time, maybe, try to think more about the mechanics 🤔

A neat little concept, with more mechanics, art, balance and feedback this could totally be a thing. It made me think that its interesting how much we have the reflex to kill whatever's moving and I had to restart a few times to focus on not doing so.
Also the thunder should definitely be constant on mouse button down and not just appearing on click, that's a bit toxic considering the amount of times you use it. Nice job!

An interesting idea at the very least, and, interesting graphics. And hey, you've got a lot to be proud of for being an amateur and submitting your first entry.

As for the game itself, it definitely needs some rebalancing, or new mechanics introduced to balance it with. You can actually avoid ever having to sacrifice just by spamming left click. The points gained greatly outscale the points lost. Up until you crash of course.

Soo, I tried the game, and it didn't appeal much to me, unfortunately.
I could just keep on planting, and nothing would happen. I had literally no reason to kill off any of the Ludums, as I was unable to lose, if I just kept feeding them, but I did lose when killing them off. It's hard to keep track of the actual point of the game.
I like the graphics though! Those are amazing, but gameplay needs to be more.. defined? :) - overall, it was alright.

I really like the use of the theme! It could've been implemented into the gameplay more effectively, but I thought it was brilliant how you created a life form inspired by Ludum Dare itself. I also liked how Planet 43 was inspired by this particular Ludum Dare. I love the crisp and animated visuals, but I do wish there was some audio to make it feel more complete. It's fun to watch the Ludums come to life, but it starts to feel a little repetitive after a while. Also, I found that I was able to survive by only left clicking, so you might want to make some adjustments. Otherwise, this is a pretty good entry! You did an excellent job on your first Ludum Dare!

very inovative game. nice. I think A timer would have been nice, to see when the next life consumption happens.
Your planat looked realy nice and the face changeing was awesome. was it inspired by the LudumDare42 of Blackthornprod?
if so, verry nice twist there. you managed to bring the same message but with a compleatly new gameplay.
if not deffinitly check it out I think your going to like it :-D

Aaah Finally I found someone who has a similar taste of GameDev to me. My entry is very similar to yours. It is very difficult to get the balance of ludums and life - took me several go's to become good at this game. Controls and art are very good.

Great idea, unfortunatly you can just spam left click to win (and it crashed at some point), but with some balancing it should be really good.
Graphics are great too, nice job.

The game kept crashing for me, also i could just spam the left mouse button and never got to loose, i thing you could polis your mechanics a little bit more and this could be pretty cool, the best aspect overall was the graphics, sismple but appealing :)

Firstly it's very interesting, kind, and great that you put your game development timelaps. Then for your entry itself, the concept is interesting and fun. There is an arcade feeling. The graphics are a bit poor, nevertheless this is a compo so I don't throw stone at you.
