CARnage by Rolle
[This game might not be suited for children. It contains animated violence, blood and gore.]
We are the new gladiators. Our world is fire and blood. Once, I was a cop. A road warrior hunting the outlaws. As the world fell, each of us in our own way was broken. PRIVATE CORPORATIONS run all correctional facilities for profit. Food and life is scarce. Now I fight for survival, I fight for MEAT! I am CARnage!
Welcome to enjoy an adrenaline filled top-down car racing game inspired by old school games like Death Rally and Death Race and movies like Mad Max. Will you be able to finish the race before your opponents? Or will you have to starve yet again...?
Finish the number of laps needed by the level before your opponents. Try to get a high score. Pick up the power-ups to help you along your battles.
You'll have to finish first to be able to continue and call you a "winner". Run over pedestrians to get a higher kill-count. But watch out, a hit also increases your Gore-O-Meter. The higher it goes the slower your car will go... How many kills do you dare to get?
Controls: Keyboard or Gamepad - Left: Left arrow OR a - Right: Right arrow OR d - Thrust: Up arrow OR w [Gamepad A] - Reverse: Down arrow OR s [Gamepad X] - Use power-up: Space [Gamepad B]
Power-ups: - Nos: makes you go faster for a couple of seconds - Car wash: wash your car to bring down the Gore-O-Meter and thus making you go faster again
Use the boost lanes to go faster! Don't cheat! You have to go thru all checkpoints to win...
This time around 4 of us teamed up to do a Jam: Team Östersund (Sweden):

It seems we are not perfect and couldn't create a perfect and bug-free game in 72h. We apologize for this. No meat will be given to the developers tonight! So this was recently updated: (also see: https://github.com/ldosd/ldosd.github.io/commits/master)
(2017-12-05 18:44) - bug fix for slow car on desert (calculated wrong value for slowdown) - full gore was never enough, it kept on adding gore making it too slow

I like the Rival driver AI.
Car engine sound could do with some changing based on speed, and the NOS could use an animation. But those are nitpick points.
Would be cool if there were more pedestrians to run over as that is very fun. Like a big bundle at the beginning.
God job team.
Fun game! I am extremely bad at not hitting people.

"Refreshing" gore game, for those who are bored by pony, cat & love. Well polished skulls & blood, green colors maybe dangerous if you don't wear sunglasses.
Now, I'm trying to see how many people I can kill!
Anyway, good game, I liked it.
The title screen art is lovely. The in-game graphics could use more scenery & doodads... maybe some larger stuff like buildings.
It's very difficult to catch up if the pack gets a little ahead of you, because they eat all the power ups.
The game would benefit from an upgrade shop screen, to incentivize the murders.
As for the game, it's fun. I don't know Carmageddon, I only know Micro Machines and think you managed to capture the fun aspect of top-down racers while also giving it a fun twist related to the theme. Hats off to you guys.
@blizary thank you! @sawtan giggles like a little girl every time his gfx gets compliments! Running people over is part of the game, so don't feel about it. ;-)
@aaronw thanks for playing! Mission accomplished for us then! Just what we were going for!
@krasse Ooohhh, there goes @sawtan again with the giggles... ;-) Yes, those are definitely things we would loved to have refined, but didn't have time to do. Thanks for playing and enjoying, comments like this makes us happy! Are you Swedish BTW? Cause I like some krasse on my meat-sandwich! You making me hunggy! (cress)
@adrenallen well running over peds (or pedos as we like to call them, making it more OK to run them over) isn't really negative. In real life maybe, but in the game it is the only way to get a score. :-) Thanks for playing! (stop that giggling @sawtan ffs!)
@nilsson yupp, you are evil and you are going straight to hell! Sorry! But on a good note; you can play the game in hell as much as you want to! Thank you for your kind comments!
@mase classic is what we were going for! We also agree regarding the gfx, we just didn't have time to add more stuff. :( We also wanted to make the game difficult, but not impossible. Just like in the 80's! Oooh, yes, we had planned for an update/shop-screen! But there was no time to implement it... Thanks for playing!
@captaindreamcast exactly! Who doesn't like a good scream when running people over? Right? 22 is an OK score! That's 22 less mouths to feed meat to! Thanks you for your comment and for playing!
The car handling is surprisingly good. I'd have liked them to be a bit faster, and the speed boosts a bit more .... boosty?
A very solid game. Well done! :)
@swarrly Thanks, we did play quite a lot with the controls. Everybody has a little bit of different take on how it "should" feel. Glad you liked it! Maybe we should have added some info in-game also about the power-ups, we didn't think about that actually, thanks for the tip! Glad you enjoyed the game!
The music is a good choice, the controls are pretty spot on, and the race itself is hard enough to be a good game. The game seems very polished, and that's a big plus. Animated blood is great!
All that said, the screams seemed a bit long in my opinion, (but that makes it more fun) That's really my only true complaint.
improvements:
1. add more racetracks
2. add different kinds of people that each die in different ways. (different splats? Aliens?)
3. multiplayer!
4. add more cars, more wheels, etc
5. make the boost areas a different color, maybe? I usually see green or red, depending on the game. And along those lines, maybe have different levels of boost, each with a different color.
6. if the focus ever is removed from the game window, it would be better for the game to pause. that way you wont lose your place
Well done.
- Art Style, skulls are nicely done, blood stamps on the car ++
- Difficulty level seems fine (but it could be lower for LD)
- Carmageddon, GTA2, Mad Max Hype!
- Really fun to play
Other things:
- Some sounds are bit spiky to my ears (don't know why)
- Enemy car are not that bumpy as player's one. They follow their route and really hard to ram them.
- My first try was awfull -- I didn't recognize 'checkpoints rule' and power-up that removes blood (it looks like a resistor to me)
- I'd recommend to add small unobtrusive arrows to show direction to the next checkpoint and opponents, on edge of the screen.
Here are my first tries:
https://youtu.be/v9Oaf63FdZU
:skull::skull::skull:
- Good game loop
- Visuals are well made and fitting
- SFX are interesting, but not overdone
- Controls feel pretty tight for the type of game
## Cons
- Really difficult
- Unclear about the power ups on first play through (what do they do? is this fuel or what?)
- The most fun thing in the game (hitting a pedestrian) is punishing to the player
I had fun, and this is a well-made entry.
@nerketur the long screams are intended, they should make you think about them. If you like running over people youi'll like the sounds! If you don't like running over people. well, don't run them over and they wont scream! Easy! ;-) Thanks for playing and your great comments!
@mr-madcat why thanks for noticing! We did put some time into polishing it to make it feel more like a "real" game. Often the LD-games we make are far from polished... Thanks for playing please come again! Miua!
@tvance the plan was to record our own voices for the screams, but I'm not sure we actually had time to do it. So our sound-guy did them. I don't believe any animals or humans were harmed during the recording... ;-) Hm, yes, maybe we could have been a bit more clear on the theme, but we were just happy to be able to put something fun together, didn't have so much time to think. =) Thanks for playing!
@icxon wow, thanks for your valuable and detailed feedback. It is much appreciated! We actually agree with most of your comments (even the "other things" ;-) ). Unfortunately there wasn't time to polish it enough to take all the small quirks out of it. We hope you enjoyed it anyway and thanks for taking the time to do a detailed run down of the game!
@roaring-cat-games yeah, we wanted it to be difficult. But maybe we made it a bit too difficult in the process. The point was to make the player fight for that finish-line to make the win even sweeter... Powerups could have used a bit more polish, yeah. Hitting pedestrians isn't really just punishment though, it is the way to get score. BUT if you score to much you will go slower (as in the theme om LD40 :) ). Thanks for commenting and playing Mr/Mrs/Miss Cat Games!
In fact, I worked myself up into such a frenzy that I was like "WAIT A MINUTE this engine sounds like a vacuum cleaner instead of a severed leg going into a wood chipper downed an octave!" I drifted, but where was the skidding howl making me feel like I was at the edge of losing all control? I body-checked the enemy car - you know, the one with the awesome funeral art, slamming into them with my skull-adorned armor-plated wasteland-warrior monster machine, but nothing happened. No ca-runch sound, no jutter-slam rumble of power hitting power.
I was tuned to a different channel than the other drivers. I was screaming that kind of cheesy metal the metalheads won't even listen to because it's too far into the whole Dungeons and Dragons warrior hymn viking thing, but they were like rolling down the window to ask if I had any Grey Poupon. Then I drove in the dirt like a peasant and they ostracized me from their society, and I never saw them again.
I want my car sprite to vibrate a tiny hum that increases as I speed up; I want screeches and crunches and clanks; I want shoving and reactions to my actions. I want to feel out of control, edge of my seat, slammed in the face. And I want a couple of the drivers to suck, so when I drive in the dirt I still have someone to tangle with when I get back on the road.
In all seriousness, you have kind of an awesome core here. A killer art scheme, a straightforward but compelling premise of RC Pro-Am + Mad Max, and tight easy-to-pick-up controls. I was having a little fun with the review, but hope I didn't sound too negative. I think what's here is really nice, but it's got this potential to be taken up to eleven that I would have just loved to see. It takes twenty tiny touches and you'll get it there. You should totally grind them out just for kicks before calling it quits on this one.
Nice entry!
We'll try to keep the bar at a right height next time around to get the core feeling a bit more true. Not long till the next jam now, we'll take your thoughts to heart and try to deliver carnage for real!
Chainsaw Cheerz!
