Tomaton by ursagames

[raw]
made by ursagames for LD 39 (JAM)

screen1.png

It's like dark souls but made from scratch during Ludum Dare. Also with robots!

If the game is lagging or feels slow,

please adjust graphic settings on the launcher.

Instructions on how to play are in the game.

A lot of planned features were cut, because after who knows how many jams I still can't contain my scope creep. Sorry about the lack of audio.

I'm just happy I got a lot of the core mechanics in place in the span of the JAM. The animations gave me a major headache, but I think it looks alright all things considered.

Hope you all enjoy! I do plan on finishing some stuff up on this post Jam!

I like the idea of the game but I think the blur of the game was giving me some headache. Despite of that the game looks cool, you have a variety of enemies and the animations are good.

Good job here, I am just missing some sound or background music.

By the way, tomaton in my country means big tomato hahahahah

Looking pretty sweet :)

for the animations giving you trouble you done a fab job.
I ended up getting attacked by a homing missile by a helicopter robot, well done.

@quemagalletas Thanks! It seems like the motion blur is more pronounced on other machines, I barely noticed it on mine. I know there was some association with tomato, but I was trying to do a shorter version of Automaton.

@oboshape Thank you! I ended spending hours and hours fighting with animation bugs. I'm starting to think manually adding motion in and not trying to fiddle with switching between root motion would have been easier.

I think I won the game

More seriously, that's a great entry and I'm impressed at what you managed to achieve in this short time frame. I played it for the long time, helping townspeople and exploring the cave with a lot of missile-shooting enemies, this is where I died. The dialogs were humorous, the graphics and animations were OK, too bad there's no sound ! Overall, great job !

It is unfortunate that I have a low framerate while playing, make it very long to reach the village.
The game is pretty nice, it was great to see different ennemies and a defensive position ; I would have liked some health pack in the tower because the helicopter robots were really hard to beat.

A little problem when rolling next to a wall : I'm beneath the building

As it was above - **DAT BLUR**!!!

No, really - blur/bloom time has passed by and we need to move forward. For god sake graphics programmers understand this nowadays and they use them in right places.

Overall, short and fun game, reminded me Gothic times. It was my dream to create third person exploration project like this, so thanks for inspiration!

Good job!

@zoglu Many thanks! I was really disappointed that I ran out of time for sound and more polish. I only ended up getting 2 hours of sleep before going down to dev GAMM conference all day Monday, so it is what it is!

@zessirb I'm sorry about the low framerate! I should have added in some graphics settings. Interesting bug with the rolling, I think that's the root animation movement messing with the collision... I need to figure out a better solution for that!

@ruba haha yeah, apparently that blur is a lot stronger for other people than it was for me. It doesn't help that I also played the game in the "preview" window for most of the Jam. My first time using post processing effects, lesson learnt :P Thanks though! I loved the gothic games, fun times.

Funny! I "conquered" the "boss-automat" at the end :D What I didn't like (blur wasn't THAT bad) was the rather slow motion, but for the scope of the game it was ok. I also didn't know how to fight those helicopter-bots. However it's a solid piece :)

Really fun game, very complete and polished, but I think that this blur is a little bit too strong.

@pcmaster So, apparently the speed seems to be really dependent on how the game is running, I didn't get to do much testing there, but if you turn the settings down, you apparently zoom super fast. Whoops! :D

@theflyingkeyboard Thank you! And that is noted, I will make sure not to add so much motion blur in the future!

Well, there's certainly some fun elements to this entry. I like the Dark Souls - esque gameplay and for a timespan of 3 days, they work pretty well all things considered. Audio would have definitely made a big impact to further drive home the "weighty" feeling and mood.

Graphics-wise, the blur is way over the top. I'd argue against using a general depth of field at all but practically making your player visually impaired is definitely not great. I also experienced pretty apparent slowdowns with some particle effects.

In any case, I'd call this a job well done!

This was really fun to play! I was really impressed to see a 3D platformer like this in LD. I just wish so badly there could have been some audio, but never the less still really great fun! I made sure all the villagers were happy, got to the end and then went and killed everyone I could find! :D

Wow, Im really impressed with this entry! so much content for such little time, loved the honest endding aswell hehe. The blur was too much for my eyes, and the enemies felt easy. On the other hand the animations are great and the controls are really solid and fun to play with. Top entry!

Really impressive what you could achieve in the timeframe of a LD, but ,as you said it yourself, you might have gone a little too overboard on the scope.

Please keep working on it, it would be interesting to see where this went!

The graphics on this games were amazing. Some basic sound effects would have added so much to the game though. Controls felt a little sluggish or slow, though I definitely got the dark souls vibe from them and the animations so maybe that is okay. Overall I think if it was tightened down a bit, and things were a bit closer together (or run speed increased slightly) it would have been amazing. As is, it is only really good. Great Job!

Thanks everyone! If the game is really slow please try running it on lower graphics settings. Apparently lag really impacts the movement speed... which is awful since I must have messed up somewhere pretty bad for that to happen. And I agree, the lack of audio is really unacceptable. I'll do better prioritizing it next time!

I like where this game is going. I think the bloom effect adds to the style you were looking for. Totally would have given graphics 5 stars had I not gotten SO DIZZY! The camera was panning around all over the place. The slow speed of the character could help the player take in the sheer beauty of the game, or the character speed (at least when pressing shift) could be increased.

A fun game that looks pretty damn nice. I liked the idea and the execution was good. The controls did feel a little stiff in places but it seems like it could be easily improved upon and I'd love to see it happen. The environment was fun to wander around and the animations were great. Good job overall!

I've not even played Dark Souls but I could still feel the Dark Souls vibe coming through. This is fantastically built - the animations are solid, the combat is satisfyingly tricky, and the NPC commentary is hilarious.

With some basic audio, items (some sort of healing item is critical), and checkpoints for a larger map, I could see this being a super-good post-jam entry.

Nice work!

This was a really cool little game. I like the idea of having a souls-like with robots and am really looking forward to seeing were you'll go from here with your idea. I also really liked the robot models and the clean look of your world. If I had to criticise one thing it would be the movement controls, for some reason moving the character never really felt right, like he had a mind of his own sometimes. It's really hard to describe :D

All in all fantastic entry though. I loved it :)
