Need for Fish by joh

[raw]
made by joh for LD 41 (JAM)

It's a race to the finish line! but first We have to wait.

needforfishgif1.gif Its a game about fishing... And racing.

Now with HTML version!

I have a need... A need for patience!

Can be played fully with Space only!!!

  • space to cast
  • space to wheel back with no fish (to recast or rebait)
  • space to wheel back with fish (release when red)

M to mute

I would even say its easy to play, hard to master!!

Know the fish, Know yourself. (no seriously, knowing fish can help)

This is awesome! How can a game that seems so simple be so bloody difficult to win! I eventually got there (thanks to shark power). While it seems simple, it is still a lot of fun and the sheer amount of fish makes it interesting to know how fast/far you will go with each bite. Great work!

Brilliant idea! I'm loving this jam so much, we get to see ideas like yours come up. Definitely haven't seen anything like this before. The game is really satisfying to play, especially with the built in ups and downs of catching and riding the fish. I'm super sad I can't get this shark though, I wanted to see how crazy it can get.

In general the mood of this game is 5 stars. The colors and motion all make it seem bright and hectic. Fantastic entry.

I have played the game five times but still can't finish the game! Always DNF.:-(
The Racing part of the game(the fish drag the boat thing)feels good. And some kinds of fish(not shark) usually slip away from the rod. Maybe you need to fix some data and lower the difficulty?

We have also made a little game here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/typer-world-cup
You’ll have my eternal gratitude if you’d check it out:-)

Ha! Loved this! Great mashup- I don't know if I have ever felt such a combination of frustration and satisfaction! ;) And that was before I actually caught a fish! Fabulous concept and superb delivery. Reminds me of Odell Lake and some sort of Lego Racer. Love the cursing fish racers when they are stuck. Will be back to play more! Thanks for the great game!

I love Game Jam so what a wonderful idea! And done in the game maker, I'd love to talk to you about how it was done and everything. The art and the sound are perfect, they are to be congratulated.

Absolutely love this! Took several attempts (and rereading the Help) to get the basics down, but I enjoyed even failing lol The water and wind sounds set a great mood too. One small buglet, if you go back to the main menu after finishing a race, the help button doesn't seem to want to work. But that's tiny.
Again, well done!

Nailed it. Great use of theme, great idea, great execution.
I feel like the ultimate test for an LD game is if you can describe it outside of the context of the LD, without mentioning the theme or the constraints it was made under, and it still sounds like a fun idea worth bringing to life. This was brought to life beautifully.

Your game is very simple but also really funny. Altough the instructions are kind of unclear the game mechanics are easily understandable after a couple of try and it's incredibly addictive. Great job!

Brilliant! It took a minute for me to get the hang of it, but wow - absolutely fun game. I bet you could port this to mobile and make some $$ - no joke. It's a good "timewaster" type of game IMHO

Just like other have said - you rocked this! I could not find anything wrong with this, i've played 5 to six times now, but i still cannot beat the NPCs. So maybe it could be easier HAHA, but really because i liked the challenge!!! Great work!

Hi all, thanks for the kind comments, its really appreciated!

@YuukiMakoto Any fish can escape, it happens at random when the fish is at max distance 500+/500.

You reduce the distance with the difference in speed of you and the fish. Thus faster fish (shark being among the fastest) will escape faster due to being unable to close the distance fast enough. An alternative is not throwing at max distance. Thus when the fish bites it will not be at 500/500. Not subtleties Id expect people to notice, but just putting it out there.

@joemid Although I really can't recall much of lego racers (so no, it was not an inspiration) I am mind blown by someone bringing it up, because i did play it and loved it, but totally forgot the game existence. Wow.

@Very bad Bunny Anything specific you'd like to know, always nice to chat gamedev. I've learned a lot from others, wouldn't mind sharing some of it around!

added a html version, did take into account some of the things that were mentioned(like help bug), but no new features/gameplay simply a more accessible version.

The concept is great  thought I think it need some tweaks to be more enjoyable, much like @YuukiMakoto said, fishing doesn't get easy and it becomes frustrating :grimacing:

This was adorable! I think a fishing racing game was a clever mashup, and you executed it well! The audio was calming and after a little trial and error I was riding a shark across the finish line. I like that you can actually catch the fish, too. There were a couple UI scaling issues with the help menu and I think the game needed to actually end and bring you back to the menu when the race was over, but aside from that this was a good entry. Nice job!

I love it! It's a really great game to play! and you can catch the fish is so funny.

It would be great if you can give the 4th,5th player more fish so they can rejoin the race.

I found that I only had 2~3 small fish when I was way behind other players, spent lot's of time trying to catch them and had no chance to get the 1st,2nd.

Amazing entry, one of my favourite so far, everything is well put together, the genre mashup works well. The mechanics works well and the system is pretty addictive ! Good work :)

After a few tries I got 1st with 1:20 and 4 fish, and then 1st with 1:20 and 2 fish. Cute game with a funny premise. The animations and the sound all have nice attention to detail and make it a fun experience! It was confusing figuring out how to play, and even after I won I'm still not sure how exactly things work; it's possible the game would be better with slightly simplified mechanics, but it's hard to say without seeing it. Great job!

Amazing game, and I got to catch a shark. Maybe consider improving the graphics, add some background music and make it mobile. Check out mine if you haven't https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/goal-defense

Really fun and a great idea!

It was difficult to initially see which player I was, but that was quickly understood.
It took a bit for me to understand the fish reel-in meter, as well.

I see a lot of potential in this!
