The Cycle by nate_wec

made by nate_wec for LD 43 (COMPO)

A spooky little game where you collect people to sacrifice (Or not) for power. It takes about 10 minutes to collect 100 people (Hint hint, end of the game)

Controls:

WASD To move

Shift to run

It's way better than I expected.
Combat is quite fun, although, I have two complaints. First one -- your tangible power doesn't scale well with numbers you get for sacrificing people. Yes, sure, I have 50 damage, but that doesn't really matter, because I'm one-shoting enemies as if I had 5. Maybe, the size of the projectile should increase as well (and it would fit "you vs the horde" gameplay really well)

Second -- I wish there was some reward for giving people to the pumpkin guy, because at that point, you are just throwing away free health (and that might have been the while point, but imo there should have been something to acknowledge, maybe a "good" ending).

And a better tutorial wouldn't hurt. And UI is obnoxious sometimes. And music, while moody and creepy, get old preety fast

Overall, it's quite an enjoyable little game, even though it's simple and doesn't look that great

It's a good start imo, lots of room for improvement into a bigger game. I think the fun of the game comes from fighting and taking people to sacrifice--so I would put more emphasis on that. More ways to combat? Different types of upgrades? New types of enemies to fight? Like I said, it's a great start and certainly fits the theme :)

@apple-dash Thanks for the comment! The scaling didn't go as well as I hoped, I wanted to add more enemies but ran out of time (Plight of all ludum dares) There a reward! Just didn't communicate it well, he gives you health for every single person you have ever given him

(Example you give him 1, you get 0.1 back, next time you give him 2, he gives you 0.3 back, etc)

And there is a good ending! Just don't sacrifice people (It's hard I haven't done it but it's possible)

The tutorial was meant to be kinda mysterious but some more explanation of the games mechanics wouldn't hurt. I'm just really bad at UI programming! So I'll try to shrink that down if I ever do more on this game. And I wanted more creepy music, again ran out of time.

Thanks for the commment!

I just take it as a dodge game, beacause there's no reson to take the risk to fight them...

@shiqichuan There is a very good reason! You can see all the dead bodies pile up... Other than that yes there is no reason. Again I wanted to add enemies that could grab and hold onto people (Time, my arch nemesis)
