Calorie by Terryd98

[raw]
made by Terryd98 for LD 40 (COMPO)

i2.png

This game was inspired by a weight loss journey I embarked on roughly 2 years ago and the anxiety and frustration that the word "Calorie" brought with it. You must get to the Gym at the end of every level without getting so fat that you explode! but the catch is you become less agile as you eat food so avoid the food! Except for apples they make you loose weight.

Try finish the 5 levels and see the end credits! I bet you cant finish the game! Please do leave comments, Thanks!

UPDATED VERSION 1.2 - Bugs fixed(crash after level 5)

Follow my further progress on Calorie on my website: www.terrydarcy.eu

This game was made using: - Java(no game libraries)- eclipse oxygen ide - Paint.net for art - Tiled for level design

Controls: - WASD or Arrow keys to move - 'r' to restart level - Shift for umbrella - 'm' to turn music off

Fun little platformer. I became fat and died playing! Several times!

Nice responsive visuals on the character with the calorie amount. Nicely done on the theme also.

The idea for this game is great! The movement could be a little more fluid but the level design works very well. A couple animations playing at the wrong time here and there, but no major glitches or bugs. It was a lot of fun!

I can't get past level 3! :( Well done though, cute animations and funny idea. Jumping is a little floaty.

I see I'm not the only one to take this interpretation on the theme. The game is fun, and the art creates a nice mood. My only complaint with this game is that it gets too difficult too early. After several attempts, I just couldn't beat the third level. Also, I wish the umbrella effect lasted longer. It reminds me of the sheet in Alladin for SNES.

That's hilarious. I love how the sprite changes as the character gets more and more obese. Well done!

Interesting take! Very hard! it got real hard real quick as soon as you ate a few things.

Took a while to get that space was umbrella since you could breeze past it in the beginning. Maybe in the second level have some help text there?

Nah man, I can't get behind the idea that spikes make me fat, all those saturday morning cartoons taught me that they pop people.

I can tell you had a lot of fun designing those levels and it really shines through. Spikes as the bounce and golden apple as the landing pad, that's the kinda thing that makes you go, "how'd he come up with that?". Great stuff.

Nice Idea! But apples do also have some calories ;)
small improvement: Limit the framerate, its normally just one line of code

Thanks for all the nice comments and constructive criticism everyone! I just noticed while play testing my game that the game crashes when you finish the last level and the credits roll but it is fixed now. Please do report any bugs!

Really funny game that fits the theme perfectly. I didn't read about the apples ingame. Was it there? I kept on getting fatter hahaha. Congrats on the humor!

Good job! It's a somewhat twisted idea, exploding, having food chase you, getting too fat to go to the gym. I also had to realize myself when I couldn't get to the gym anymore and give up... which is kind of horrifying given the real-world parallells. Nice use of theme :)

Avoiding burgers and pizza pieces made this game really sad. Besides of that, I really like it :D

Needs work, it's hard to move when you are too heavy and impossible to beat in some cases, there should be a calorie burning thing (like walking a lot) because there isn't always an apple, and the movement is awkward at times. Good idea and fits the theme well!
