Cocaine McBain - A Farm Rush Adventure by Goat Toaster Games

(WINDOWS ONLY, SORRY!)
I did everything myself from scratch except all of the audio!
*DOWNLOAD: https://goattoastergames.itch.io/cocainemcbain *
TLDR;
- Farming Sim x Platform Runner
- Farmer takes cocaine to get all her farming done in time for the food truck.
- 3 Levels/days. Get all 40 crops and 40 animals.
- Star rating out of 5 at the end.
- If you hit a crate, you get sent back to the start of level one! Yes it's harsh, sorry!
- If you don't care about star rating and just focus on avoiding crates it's much easier.

THEME :cow:
For LD41's theme of combining two incompatible genres, I thought I'd try to make a platform runner x farming simulator.
Farming sims are usually slow and relaxed and top-down, so I thought it would be funny if the farmer needed to rush around doing their farming in a different game style to the norm. I don't think I quite got the "farming simulator" part of it clear though, mostly just the platform runner. But hopefully you enjoy it anyway!

GAME :video_game:
You play as Tabitha McBain, who has been too lazy playing videogames and has only 3 days left until she needs to fill the produce truck to sell her goods! While making coffee, she notices next to the sugar a conveniently placed jar of cocaine. She puts it in her coffee instead of sugar to give her the extra "buzz" needed to get all her work done in time!

GOAL :star:
This game is super easy if you don't care about what score you get at the end. You can complete the game to the end without collecting a single item, so long as you don't hit a crate and get rekt. But...you'll only get 1/5 stars!
If you hit a crate - you get sent all the way back to the beginning of level one! Harsh, but I think it makes for a fun challenge. Also this was just easier to code in the short time frame so that I could spend more time on the art!
Can you get 5 stars?? Show me a screencap if you do!

TOOLS :wrench:
- Game Maker Studio 2 Pro
- Photoshop CC
- Pyxel Edit
- Coffee (NOT cocaine!)
BUG FIXES :bug:
- Accidentally deleted one of the crops, resulting in nobody being able to get 5 stars. Oops! FIXED.
- Fixed problem with score not resetting after the game ends.
- Fixed grass parallax issue.
- Fixed jump issue A BIT.
- Quickly added credits to menu, whoops. Forgot those!
- Improved tutorial image to make the controls clearer.
KNOWN ISSUES :cold_sweat:
- I have improved the jump in comparison to when I first submitted (where it was impossibly hard), but it seems to still be very hard and I need to work on my jump physics and timing in the future.
- I am aware that I should have checkpoints for each level instead of going back to day one, but I ran out of time to code this and I think it would be unfair for me to go back in and add this now.
But thankyou all for the feedback on these issues!

@theArtifacts Thanks so much! Yes I really struggled with incorporating the theme, so decided to just focus on making a nice visual and fun game. Thanks for the feedback :D
@Riyeou Thanks so much! :D I'm glad to hear you played it multiple times!
@Julink Thankyou very much! I really appreciate the kind words :D
I struggled a bit with the controls, then gave up and just mashed a and d constantly.
Graphics are spot on, I love the hills in the background! One thing did throw me off, though, the parallax grass between the ground and the fence doesn't seem to be moving at the correct rate - maybe put it behind the fence, or have it move at a rate between the ground's and the fence's rate?
I hit a lot of crates at first, especially at the slower speed of the first level. Having to start over seems a bit harsh, maybe some other punishment? how about speeding up the game significantly every time you hit a crate? start hallucinating after too many hits to the cranium? I dunno.
I love the animals' expressions, too. Those cows never knew what hit them
@achebit Thanks so much :smiley:
@DerLasseHenrich Thankyou so much! :hearts:
@MarkoPoloDev Thankyou so much for such a fantastic response! I really appreciate the feedback. I have now tried to fix the parallax problem with the grass and I have now also fixed the jump height since quite a few people have mentioned it being a problem, hopefully it's better now! I probably just got too used to it while playtesting.
Haha yes it is very harsh, though that was somewhat my intention (and also just made it easier to code in the short time frame), however I definitely wouldn't do this in a proper game so I appreciate the feedback here, that is a very neat idea with the gaining speed when hitting crates!
Haha those poor cows!! :joy:
@WarticWare Thankyou so much!! I have had a few comments on the jump, so I have now tried to fix the jump height. Hopefully it's better now, thanks so much for the feedback!
If I would to change anything, I'd add a penalty for pushing the wrong buttons to prevent spam.
And yet my congratulations, I can see it being released on phones as is and it still will be better than 90% of shovelware out there.
@DraperDanMan Wow thanks so much for the kind words!! That's so great to hear.
Theme-wise, it was supposed to be a farming simulator crossed with a platform runner. Farming sims are usually slow and relaxing (I've been really digging Stardew Valley recently) and I thought it would be funny if the farmer had to rush around doing all the crops and collecting stuff super fast, in a game-style that farming sims aren't typically done in (platform runner). I feel I did not quite get the "farming sim" part down properly, but I'm sure I'll do better with future themes!
That's amazing! I thought it was a team work with a dedicated artist to reach this level of polish in the pixel art!
I really loved it! One of the top games in this LD for sure!
@Anthony Krafft Haha that's a fantastic idea, thanks for the feedback! I definitely need to work on jump timing. Thanks so much for the wonderful comment!
Overall this is a very strong game, great job.
@WalkDiGidong Thankyou so much for the fantastic comment, really great to hear that you found the gameplay addictive!
love your take on the rural cliché ! The graphics are top-notch, the game is so expressive ! Regarding gameplay, I found it quite intuitive and enjoyable (the long jump is a godsent). Had a great time, thanks for the game !
Controls are bit hard in the beginning but you get used to it later on!
Loved the Introduction of the story all tho i recommend using more time for players to read since there is a skip button and there are some slow readers out so you can give every user the experience of the game!
Everything else is amazing it's great job to make less than 72 hours!
The sound effects (and voice acting) were adorable, graphically it's one of the more beautiful games in the Jam this year too! Can't believe you guys did this in 72 hours lol.
I'd love to see this develop more! And i feel like it would work great on mobile too, just a pitch though.
Cheers!
I hope you continue with the project.

It did get a bit annoying to reset all the time though.
@facepalmpt That's really great to hear, thanks so much!
@Pagi Thankyou so much! The amount of people that keep telling me it should be a mobile game is making me look into it! :grinning:
@mrPenguin Thankyou so much! :smile:
@JLV Wow that's such a flattering comment, it's very interesting seeing people's mixed views on some of the games mechanics. Thankyou so much for the great feedback and for enjoying my game!
@Wassim Thankyou so much for the kind words and great feedback! Yes I really stuffed up on handling the text part haha! I think next time I will just let it sit and not continue until they have pressed a button so they can read it all in their own time. And I will be sure to make a better tutorial in the future. Thankyou!! :grinning:
@lum Thankyou so much for the compliments and the feedback! Yes quite a few people have expressed this being an issue, I'll be sure to change that in a final version of the game.
@MosesG Thanks so much, that's great feedback and a lot of people have been saying the same thing. I will absolutely make sure the final version resets at each room. I really appreciate the feedback!
@erebus It was great watching you play and getting live feedback, thanks so much! :grinning:
@Utho Thankyou so much for the amazing comment! It really makes my day. Haha yeah I had to pull an all nighter but I got it all done in the end :joy: I keep hearing that I should make the final version into a mobile game, so I will look into it!
@finalspace Wow thankyou so much for the high rating and praise!
@patrickgh3 Thanks so much for the great feedback! It was awesome watching you play. I'll definitely work on game mechanics in a final version of the game. Thankyou!!
@cristiano.m.garcia Thanks so much for the rating! I enjoyed your game. I do intend to continue with this project, thankyou!!
@stardynamic Haha thanks so much! The idea of a farmer running frantically to get the farming done was funny so I just had to roll with the idea. Thanks so much! :grinning:
@dib Wow that's so great to hear, thankyou so much!! Yes I definitely will fix that problem in the final version of the game :joy:

Suggestions/gripes:
* Restart just the day (maybe that wouldn't apply if this was a regular endless runner, but if you want people to finish your game during LD, you shouldn't probably make it harder than neccessary for us)
* nothing stopped me from just pressing A + D so I didn't have to focus on whether it was a crop or an animal - it could be on a timer or you could force the player to click it for a different kind of distraction
* this's probably just me, but my eyes started to hurt after a while and that never happens to me (I couldn't say if there was motion blur on day 3 or it was just my eyes) - I have finished it in the end, but I couldn't have gone for much longer if I haven't.
This game has a great ground and direction, so it'd be great if it could be further updated later on. Adding to the idea of the rush, it'd be interesting to be scored based on the timing of pressing A and D, rather than just doing it, as to prevent spamming like I did. More levels, more story, more hazards, there's so much you can add to it. In its current form, it's too simplistic. Extremely polished and impressively original in the farming and cocaine setting, but I've played so many runners that the actual gameplay experience wasn't much of a novelty.
Once again, congratulations on making such a vivid game. One of the most inspiring and funny ones I've seen this time. [My team](twitter.com/whalesandgames) are looking forward to seeing what you can come up with in the future! Cheers! :whale:
